Possibilities of Obtaining from Highly Polluted Environments: New Bacterial Strains with a Significant Decolorization Potential of Different Synthetic Dyes

Use of Euphorbia balsamifera Extract in Precursor Fabrication of Silver Nanoparticles for Efficient Removal of Bromocresol Green and Bromophenol Blue Toxic Dyes

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are attracting great attention for their use in various applications, along with methods for their green and facile production. In this study, we present a new eco-friendly approach based on the use of Euphorbia balsamifera extract (EBE) in the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs), which are then applied as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the efficient removal of water-based reactive dyes such as bromocresol green (BCG) and bromophenol blue (BPB). The as-prepared Ag-NPs are quasi-spherical in shape, with an average diameter of 20-34 nm. Diverse characterization methods, including X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, were used to analyze these Ag-NPs. The results reveal that water-soluble biomolecules in the Euphorbia balsamifera extract play an important role in the formation of the Ag-NPs. The removal of toxic dyes was studied under varied operational parameters such as Ag-NP dosage, initial dye concentration, pH, stirring time, and temperature. Under the optimum investigated conditions, nearly 99.12% and 97.25% of the bromocresol green and bromophenol blue dyes, respectively, were removed. Both BCG and BPB adsorption were found to adhere to pseudo-second-order kinetics (r₂² = 1 and 0.995) and fit the Langmuir isotherm models well (R₁² = 0.998 and 0.994), with maximal monolayer adsorption capacities of 20.40 and 41.03 mg/g, respectively. Their adsorption processes were observed to be intrinsically endothermic. The results confirm the potential of the Euphorbia balsamifera extract as a low-cost, nontoxic, and eco-friendly natural resource for the synthesis of Ag-NPs that may be useful in the remediation of hazardous dye-contaminated water sources.

Optimization of textile effluent bacterial treatment and improvement of the process efficiency through SPB1 biosurfactant addition

The current work aims to optimize biological textile effluent treatment through the use of newly selected bacterial consortia composed of two strains: Citrobacter sedlakii RI11 and Aeromonas veronii GRI. We assessed the effect of SPB1 biosurfactant addition on color removal (CR). The process was optimized by a Box-Bhenken by examining the effect of pH, consortia density and biosurfactant value on treatment efficiency. Firstly, physicochemical analyses of the studied effluent revealed an alkaline pH along with a high content of suspended materials and large amounts of organic matter. Optimal CR and a chemical oxygen demand abatement of about 94 and 86% were obtained when treating the textile effluent at pH 5 with a total optical density of 0.4 and by incorporating 0.01% SPB1 biosurfactant. Additionally, an abolishment of phytotoxicity was registered after treatment optimization. The evaluations of the action mode of both selected bacteria during textile effluent treatment suggested the occurrence of biodegradation phenomena of dyes through enzymatic activities.

Adsorption and removal of crystal violet dye from aqueous solution by modified rice husk

An approach to removing crystal violet (CV) dye from aqueous solutions was investigated by introducing a xanthate group on charred rice husk. The newly prepared charred rice husk (CRH) and xanthated rice husk (XRH) were characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, and elemental analysis. A batch technique was used to adsorb CV dye in aqueous suspensions. Different adsorbent quantities, concentrations, pH, and contact times were investigated to find the effect of these parameters. The optimum pH for both CRH and XRH was found to be 10. The adsorption capacity of CV dye onto CRH and XRH was found to be 62.85 mg/g and 90.02 mg/g at pH10, respectively. Langmuir isotherms could be reasonably explained by the experimental data. Within 60 min, equilibrium was achieved. Similarly, the kinetic data are best suited to the pseudo-second-order model. In comparison to XRH with CRH, XRH was found more efficient and can be used as a feasible alternative for removing CV dye from aqueous solutions.

Graphene oxide loaded fibrous matrixes of polyether block amide (PEBA) elastomer as an adsorbent for removal of cationic dye from wastewater

Novel highly porous nanoparticle materials are increasingly being applied in adsorption processes, but they need to be supported by robust matrixes to maintain their functionality. We present a study of hosting graphene oxide (GO) particles on polyether block amide (PEBA) melt electrospun fibers and applying such composite matrix to the adsorption of the cationic dye (crystal violet) from water. Various amounts of GO (from 0.5 to 2.0%) were mixed into pure PEBA and electrospun by melt electrospinning obtaining micro fibrous matrixes. These were characterized for morphology (SEM), chemical composition (FTIR), crystallinity (XRD), and wetting behavior (WCA). The increasing amount of GO adversely affected fiber diameter (reduced from 13.18 to 4.38 μm), while the hydrophilic properties (Water contact angle decrease from 109 to 76°) and overall dye adsorption was increased. Efficient adsorption has been demonstrated, reaching approximately 100 % removal efficiency using a 2% GO composite matrix at a dose of 40 mg/l and pH of 10. Further increase of GO concentration in polymer is not feasible due to instability in the electrospinning process.

Dye-decolorization of a newly isolated strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens W36

Dye-decolorization is one of the most important steps in dye-polluted wastewater treatment. The dye-decolorization bacteria were isolated from active sludge collected from wastewater treating pond of a dyeing and printing plant using serial dilution method. Among the 44 bacteria isolates from the active sludge, the strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens W36 was found to have strong ability in dye-decolorization. The effects of carbon source, nitrogen sources, C/N, metal ions, temperature, pH, and rotation speed for dye-decolorization were investigated. The optimum decolorization conditions were that the strain was grown in enriched mineral salt medium (EMSM) using maltose 1 g/L, (NH₄)₂SO₄ 1 g/L as carbon and nitrogen source respectively, supplemented with 100 mg/L different dyes (pH 6.0), at 30 °C, 200 rpm from 48 to 96 h. The bacteria could aerobically decolorize dyes, such as Coomassie brilliant blue (95.42%), Bromcresol purple (93.34%), Congo red (72.37%) and Sarranine (61.7%), within 96 h. The dyes decolorization products were analyzed by ultra-violet and visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy before and after decolorization, which indicated that the four dyes were significantly degraded by the strain. The results indicated that the bacteria Bacillus amyloliquefaciens W36 could be used in dye-polluted wastewater treatment.

Novel Bacteria-Immobilized Cellulose Acetate/Poly(ethylene oxide) Nanofibrous Membrane for Wastewater Treatment

In this study, electrospun cellulose acetate - poly(ethylene oxide) nanofibrous membrane was found to be unique in immobilizing bacterial cells. Here, removal of methylene blue in aqueous media was achieved by using isolated species of bacteria (Bacillus paramycoides) from industrial wastewater and immobilized on cellulose acetate- poly(ethylene oxide) nanofibers using DMSO as a solvent. The decolorization time was varied from 0 to 72 h, different dye concentrations from 20 to 200 mg/L and bacterial cells count was investigated to achieve the maximum MB removal by bacteria-immobilized CA/PEO nanofibrous membrane. The effective dye decolorization was achieved within 48 h and MB removal % was around 93%. Furthermore, reusability of the bacteria-immobilized CA/PEO nanofibrous membrane was tested. It was found that after the 4^th usage, 44% of the dye decolorization capacity still could be achieved. These results are promising and suggest that bacteria-immobilized CA/PEO nanofibrous membrane could be economically feasible and eco-friendly when used in MB removal from industrial wastewater. Combination of both adsorption and biodegradation methods was found to be effective in MB removal from aqueous media.
