Abstract
Biocontrol of phytopathogens involving the use of bioactive compounds produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB), is a promising approach to manage many diseases in agriculture. In this study, a lactic acid bacterium designated YB1 was isolated from fermented olives and selected for its antagonistic activity against Verticillium dahliae (V. dahliae) and Agrobacterium tumefaciens (A. tumefaciens). Based on the 16S rRNA gene nucleotide sequence analysis (1565 pb, accession number: OR714267), the new isolate YB1 bacterium was assigned as Leuconostoc mesenteroides YB1 (OR714267) strain. This bacterium produces an active peptide "bacteriocin" called BacYB1, which was purified in four steps. Matrix-assisted lasers desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) based approach was performed to identify and characterize BacYB1. The exact mass was 5470.75 Da, and the analysis of the N-terminal sequence (VTRASGASTPPGTASPFKTL) of BacYB1 revealed no significant similarity to currently available antimicrobial peptides. The BacYB1 displayed a bactericidal mode of action against A. tumefaciens. The potentiel role of BacYB1 to supress the growth of A. tumefaciens was confirmed by live-dead cells viability assay. In pot experiments, the biocontrol efficacy of BacYB1 against V. dahliae wilt on young olive trees was studied. The percentage of dead plants (PDP) and the final mean symptomes severity (FMS) of plants articifialy infected by V. dahliae and treated with the pre-purified peptide BacYB1 (preventive and curative treatments) were significantly inferior to untreated plants. Biochemical analysis of leaves of the plants has shown that polyophenols contents were highly detected in plants infected by V. dahliae and the highest contents of chlorophyl a, b and total chlorophyll were recorded in plants treated with the combination of BacYB1 with the biofertilisant Humivital. BacYB1 presents a promising alternative for the control of Verticillium wilt and crown gall diseases.

Abstract
Five Leuconostoc strains (CM17, CM19, PM30, PM32, and PM36) previously isolated from Indian meat showed promising antimicrobial activity against food pathogens in screening assay. This study evaluates the efficacy of these isolates against Escherichia coli Microbial Type Culture Collection and Gene Bank (MTCC) 443 and Listeria monocytogenes (MTCC 657) in spinach leaves. Challenge studies were conducted by inoculating E. coli and L. monocytogenes at 6 to 7 Log10 CFU/g of the leaves respectively and treating them with cell free supernatant (CFS) of 48 h cultures of the isolates. The samples were stored at 4°C and analyzed over a period of 5 d. The study was conducted in triplicates and statistical analysis was carried out using one-way Anova. The counts of the pathogens did not increase over the 5 d period in the control samples, without any treatment. Whereas in the case of CFS treatments, significant reduction (p<0.05) was observed in both E. coli and L. monocytogenes from 1 to 5 d with all the 5 strains as compared to the control. The counts of Listeria dropped by 0.5 to 1 log by 5 d, with PM 36 showing the highest reduction (1 log). In the case of E. coli, 1.1 to 1.5 log reduction was observed by 5 d, with again PM 36 showing the highest reduction (1.5). The overall results indicate that the isolates (specifically PM36) not only showed efficacy in in vitro studies but are also proved to be effective in food matrix making them potential clean label antimicrobial alternatives for food application.

Abstract
The airborne fungal and bacterial species present in pig farm dust have not been well characterised even though these bioaerosols are known to cause inflammation and other airway maladies. In this study, the microbial species and composition in airborne dust within and between pig farms were investigated. Passively sedimenting dust from six pig farms were collected using electrostatic dust collectors. The bacterial and fungal species were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and next generation sequencing (NGS). Dust samples taken within the same stable section revealed high resemblance and stability. Constrained statistical analysis of the microbial community compositions indicated that the types of stable did not appear to have a great effect on the bacterial and fungal β-diversity. In contrast to this, the farm from which samples were taken appeared to have the greatest effect on the bacterial β-diversity, but this trend was not observed for the fungal β-diversity. The most common bacteria and fungi according to NGS data were anaerobes typically associated with the pig intestinal tract and yeasts respectively. Bacterial sedimentation varied at a rate between 103 and 109 CFU/m2/day, with the most common species after aerobic incubation being Aerococcus viridans and Staphylococcus equorum, while Clostridium perfringens and Staphylococcus simulans were the most common species after anaerobic incubation. A total of 28 different species of bacteria and fungi were classifiable as pathogens. In conclusion, the biodiversity in pig farm dust shows a high diversity of bacterial species. However, samples from the same stable section resembled each other, but also different sections within the same farm also resembled each other, thus indicating a high degree of community stability in the dust source. In regards to fungal identification, the biodiversity was observed to be similar between samples from different stable sections and farms, indicating a higher degree of similarities in the mycobiomes found across pig farms studied.

Abstract
Fermentation microorganisms, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeast from 12 samples of tunta production chain were quantified, from the native potatoes used by the process fermentation of potatoes in the river up to the final product. During fermentation, the LAB population steadily increased from 3 to 4 to 8 log CFU/g during the first 8 days in the river and the yeast population increased from 2 to 3 to 3-4 log CFU/g. Overall, 115 LAB strains were isolated using a culture-dependent method. Molecular techniques and 16S rRNA gene sequencing enabled the identification of native species. In LAB isolates, members of the Lactobacillaceae (64%), Leuconostocaceae (9%) and Enterococcaceae (2%) families were identified. The most prevalent LAB species in the tunta production chain was Lactobacillus curvatus, followed by Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Lactobacillus sakei, Lactobacillus brevis and Enterococcus mundtii were also present. Only 13 LAB strains showed anti-listerial activity, and one of them, identified as En. mundtii DSM 4838T [MG031213], produced antimicrobial compounds that were determined to be proteins after treatment with proteolytic enzymes. Based on these results, we suggest that traditional fermented product-derived LAB strains from specific environments could be selected and used for technological application to control pathogenic bacteria and naturally protect food from post-harvest deleterious microbiota.

Abstract
A dramatic increase in bacterial resistance towards currently available antibiotics has raised worldwide concerns for public health. Therefore, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as a promisingly new group of therapeutic agents for managing infectious diseases. The present investigation focusses on the isolation and purification of a novel bacteriocin from an indigenous sample of cow milk and it’s mode of action. The bacteriocin was isolated from Weissella confusa A3 that was isolated from the sample and was shown to have inhibitory activity towards pathogenic bacteria namely Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Micrococcus luteus. The bacteriocin was shown to be heat stable and functioned well at low pH (2 to 6). Reduction of activity was shown after treatment with proteinase K, trypsin and peptidase that confirmed the proteinaceous nature of the compound. MALDI-TOF analysis of the sample gave a mass approximating 2.7 kDa. The membrane of the bacteria was disrupted by the bacteriocin causing SYTOX® green dye to enter the cell and bind to the bacterial DNA giving fluorescence signal. Bacterial cell treated with the bacteriocin also showed significant morphological changes under transmission electron microscope. No virulence and disease related genes can be detected from the genome of the strain.
