Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to evaluate the proximity between the root apices of maxillary molars and maxillary sinus floor using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the southern Turkish subpopulation. DESIGN For the study, 246 CBCT images were analyzed. The absence of antagonist teeth was excluded. Kwak's types III and V were detailed with three divisions. Division M; the penetration of the mesial root only, Division D; the penetration of the distal root only, and Division MD; the penetration of both buccal roots. The distance between the maxillary sinus and the root apices was measured. Student's t-test, one-way ANOVA, and chi-square were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The penetration of maxillary molars was 24.40%. The highest prevalence belonging to Type I. Division MD was 44.35% for Type III and 40.42% for Type V. Division M was higher than Division D. The distances between the sinus and root apices were 1.35-2.41 mm in Type I. The distance decreased with age (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Both buccal root penetration into the sinus was higher than the single root penetration. The distance of the second molar root apices to the sinus was closer than the first molar. One-quarter of the first and second molars were inside the sinus. A greater likelihood of penetration of the root apices into the sinus with increased age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to perform morphometric measurements of the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF), the transition zone to critical neurovascular structures. The second aim was to investigate the relationship between the volumes of the PPF and the paranasal sinuses and the effect of nasal septum deviation (NSD) types on all these measurements. METHODS We performed PPF's morphometry and all volume measurements on the CT images of 260 patients (130 male and 130 female, age range 18-79). RESULTS All volumetric measurements and the angle between foramen rotundum (FR) and pterygomaxillary fissure (PMF) were significantly higher in males than females. In contrast, the distance between sphenopalatine foramen (SPF) and PMF was considerably higher in females than in males. The PPF volume, the distance between the pterygoid canal (PC) and maxillary sinus, and the angle between FR and PMF were significantly higher on the right side than on the left. In contrast, the angle between PC and SPF and between greater palatine canal and PPF were considerably higher on the left side than on the right. The angle between PC and SPF decreased markedly with age. Only sphenoidal sinus volume was significantly smaller on the same side as the septal deviation. There was no correlation between PPF volume with maxillary and sphenoid sinus volumes from adjacent paranasal sinuses. CONCLUSIONS Volumetric and morphometric data obtained from PPF and paranasal sinuses can aid clinicians in diagnosing and treating patients by guiding them in selecting the right surgical approach or tools, especially in endoscopic procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Three-dimensional evaluation of maxillary sinus volume using VR mesh and correlate it with the volume of maxillary canine, lateral incisor, and dentoalveolar and skeletal dimensions in both impacted and non-impacted sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a retrospective cross-sectional study, cone beam computed tomography scans of 100 patients with unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canine were analyzed. Canine, lateral incisor, and maxillary sinus volumes on the impaction and non-impaction sides were measured using DICOM files, with three-dimensional softwares (MIMICS) and VR mesh to accomplish this assessment. RESULTS There were no significant differences in canine and lateral incisors volumes between male and female patients in the impacted side at (p > 0.05) while the maxillary sinuses volume revealed a statistical difference (P = 0.022) between male (12642 ± 810) and female (12481 ± 650) patients in the impacted side. A strong positive correlation was found between canine and lateral incisor volume for male patients in the non-impacted (r = 0.420**, P = 0.008) and impacted sides (r = 0.334*, P = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS There were no significant differences in the canine volume, the height of the anterior alveolar ridge (AARHMLI), and anterior dentoalveolar (ADAHMLI) of maxillary lateral incisors in the impacted/non-impacted side, but it showed a statistically significant difference for the lateral incisors volume in the impacted and non-impacted sides for male and female patients. The maxillary sinus volumes revealed a statistical difference between males and females in impacted and non-impacted sides.

Abstract
Introduction A deviated nasal septum may be associated with some dentofacial deformities. The aim of the study was to determine whether there is a relationship between some craniomaxillary features of unilateral and bilateral maxillary impacted canines and nasal septum deviation. Methods This is a retrospective study consisting of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 51 patients. All patients were divided into three subgroups: unilateral maxillary impacted canines (UMIC) (n=19) bilateral maxillary impacted canines (BMIC) (n=15), and control group (MC) (n=17). The septal deviation angle and some angular and dimensional measurements were performed. Differences in linear and angular measurements between the groups were analyzed using One-way ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test. Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the septal deviation angle, septal deviation direction, nasal floor angle, and other parameters, and multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to determine the effect of variables in the septal deviation angle. Results Bilateral or unilateral position of the impacted canines was found to be effective on septal deviation. The septal deviation angle and the nasal floor angle values were found to be significantly higher in the UMIC and BMIC groups (p<0.001) than in the MC group. Maxillary width was found to be significantly lower in the BMIC group compared to the UMIC (p<0.01) and MC group (p<0.001). Septal deviation angle was positively correlated with septal deviation direction and nasal floor angle (p<0.001). Palatal width and nasal floor angle were found to be negatively correlated (p<0.05), and palatal depth and septal deviation direction were found to be positively correlated (p<0.01). Groups and septal deviation angle, septal deviation direction, and nasal floor angle were found to be negatively correlated (p<0.001). The multivariate linear regression analysis revealed an association between septal deviation angle, group (p<0.01), and nasal floor angle (p<0.05). Conclusion Bilateral or unilateral position of the impacted canines was found to be effective on septal deviation. The septal deviation angle values were found to be higher when the maxillary impacted canine was unilateral. Unilateral or bilateral positions of the impacted canine and the nasal floor angle were found to be factors affecting the formation of septal deviation.

Abstract
Objectives This retrospective study aims to analyse alveolar and palatal process pneumatisation and their relationships with sinonasal variations using cone-beam computed tomography. Material and Methods The study included 500 patients aged 18 to 87 years, involving 1000 maxillary sinuses with cone-beam computed tomography scans. We examined the relationship between inferior maxillary pneumatisation and the following anatomic variations: Haller cell, concha bullosa, paradoxical concha, bifid concha, and septal deviation. Results Among the 1000 maxillary sinuses assessed, we found 223 (22.3%) with alveolar process pneumatisation (APP), 37 (3.7%) with palatal process pneumatisation (PPP), and 23 (2.3%) with the presence of both APP and PPP. Significant relationships were observed between the Haller cell (P = 0.005), nasal septum deviation (P = 0.000), and middle concha bullosa (P = 0.01) with APP. However, there were no significant relationships between the paradoxical middle concha (P = 0.07), bifid middle concha (P = 0.74), and APP. Similarly, significant relationships were observed between the Haller cell (P = 0.001), paradoxical middle concha (P = 0.009), bifid middle concha (P = 0.000), and PPP. However, there were no significant relationships between concha bullosa (P = 0.799) and PPP. Additionally, we found significant relationships between the Haller cell (P = 0.003) and the presence of both APP and PPP. Conclusions This study provides an anatomical basis for imaging diagnosis by investigating the frequency of inferior pneumatisation of the maxillary sinus and its relationship with certain sinonasal variations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the maxillary sinus volume between both sides in adult patients with upper occlusal canting (>2 mm cant) and a control group (≤2 mm cant) using cone-beam computed tomography scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included a total of 84 scans (42 scans per group) according to predetermined selection criteria. OnDemand 3-D™ software was used for volumetric and linear measurements of the maxillary sinus. Maxillary occlusal canting was determined at the level of the maxillary first molars. It was defined as the vertical difference between right and left sides relative to the Frankfort horizontal plane. Non-parametric tests were applied. RESULTS The median difference in the maxillary sinus volume between the sides was statistically significant between the control and cant groups (P < 0.001). Also, the median difference in the maxillary sinus craniocaudal height and apex sinus distance between the sides was statistically significant between the control and cant groups (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION In adult patients, maxillary occlusal canting of more than 2 mm was associated with asymmetric maxillary sinus volumes. In the cant group, maxillary first molars on the canted-down side were in close proximity to the sinus floor, which suggests a limited leeway for molar intrusion.

Abstract
The paranasal sinuses (maxillary, frontal, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses) are complex anatomical structures. The development and growth of these have been investigated utilizing a number of different methods ranging from cadaveric analysis to modern cross sectional imaging with 3D modeling. An understanding of normal pediatric paranasal sinus embryology and development enables us to better determine when pathology may be affecting the normal developmental process. Cystic fibrosis, chronic sinusitis, deviated nasal septum and cleft lip and palate are some of the conditions which have been shown to effect paranasal sinus development to varying degrees. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is becoming increasingly common and an understanding of sinus anatomy together with when periods of rapid growth occur during childhood is important clinically. Although concerns have been raised regarding the impact of FESS on facial growth, there is limited evidence of this in regards to either changes in anthropomorphic measurements or clinical assessments of symmetry post operatively.

Abstract
Purpose Tooth extraction and the projection of the tooth roots into the maxillary sinus are reported to greatly reduce the bone height from the alveolar ridge to the maxillary sinus floor, while missing teeth are reported to lead to the expansion of the maxillary sinus, all of which are important considerations during dental implant treatment for the maxillary molar region. Therefore, assessing the anatomical characteristics of the maxillary sinus acting as complicating factors is crucial before sinus augmentation. We conducted a three-dimensional examination of the effects of missing teeth and nasal septal deviation (NSD) on maxillary sinus volume (MSV). Methods We selected participants with two or more missing teeth from patients who underwent maxillary sinus augmentation for a unilateral free-end saddle between April 2019 and December 2020. We calculated the MSV and NSD using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). We compared the relationships of the presence/absence of teeth and NSD with MSV bilaterally in each patient using the Wilcoxon t-test. p-values < 0.05 denoted statistical significance. Results This study included 30 patients (30 sinuses; 12 men, 18 women). The average patient age was 58.2 ± 10.2 years (men, 60.4 ± 3.7 years; women, 59.2 ± 4.5 years; range, 40–77 years). The mean number of missing teeth was 2.98 ± 1.01: 13 patients had two missing teeth and 17 had three or more missing teeth. Nine patients (30%) had NSD. The mean MSV on the ipsilateral and contralateral sides of the NSD was 21.50 ± 3.84 cm3 and 22.10 ± 3.56 cm3, respectively; thus, NSD did not affect MSV (p = 0.150). The mean MSV on the edentulous and non-edentulous sides was 21.58 ± 3.89 cm3 and 21.77 ± 4.30 cm3, respectively; thus, the MSV was significantly smaller on the edentulous side (p = 0.00036). Conclusion Although this study was a limited preoperative study, three-dimensional measurement of the maxillary sinus with CBCT in partially edentulous patients revealed that missing teeth lead to substantial reductions in MSV, while NSD was not associated with MSV.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of present study is to assess the maxillary sinuses patients with COPD morphometrically and volumetrically using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and compared these findings according to in age and gender of control groups. METHODS CBCT images of 80 individuals that exist from 40 patients with COPD and 40 healthy individuals (6 females, 34 males) in the tomography archive were retrospectively analyzed. The volume and surface area of maxillary sinuses in COPD and control group were measured by semi-automatic segmentation method and obtained findings were statistically examinated according to age, gender. RESULTS The study was observed that there was no statistically significant difference between the right maxillary sinus area and the groups, but left maxillary sinus and total sinus area of COPD group were observed to be significantly lower than the control group (p < 0.05). Maxillary sinus volume was found to be statistically significantly lower in patients with COPD than in healthy controls (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS CBCT is a practical and effective imaging method for the evaluation of maxillary sinuses. It is thought that inflammatory diseases that cause sinonasal changes such as COPD may affect maxillary sinus sizes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The detection of anatomical variation impairments in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) is crucial in combined orthodontic and maxillofacial surgical treatments. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating the anatomical maxillary sinus characteristics, nasal septum deviation (NSD), and mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus in patients with CLP using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). DESIGN The CBCT images were classified into 3 groups of unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP; n = 40), bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP; n=14), and noncleft (control; n = 54). Subsequently, the maxillary sinus linear dimensions were assessed. Height, width, depth, infundibulum height, and ostium width were assessed as quantitative measures, whereas nasal septum deviation and mucosal thickening were assessed as qualitative measures. One-way analysis of variance and χ2 tests were utilized to identify any significant differences among the groups regarding the aforementioned variables. RESULTS Significant differences were observed among the groups regarding maxillary sinus height and depth, NSD, and mucosal thickening. Moreover, UCLP and BCLP groups showed higher incidence of NSD and mucosal thickening. However, the size of maxillary sinus height and depth was lower in the UCLP and BCLP groups. CONCLUSION The results showed that BCLP and UCLP groups obtained lower maxillary sinus height and depth compared to the control group. On the other hand, incidence of the NSD and mucosal thickening was significantly higher in UCLP and BCLP groups than those in the control group.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Anatomical variations in the sinonasal region are remarkably common and these variations may have an impact on maxillary sinus development due to their close anatomical adjacency. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of anatomical variations of the sinonasal region on the width, height, length, and volume of the maxillary sinus. METHODS Cone beam computed tomography records of 120 patients were evaluated. Nasal septum deviation angle was measured for each patient and patients were divided into three groups as mild, moderate, and severe. Sinonasal variations such as nasal septum deviation direction, septal spur, concha bullosa, uncinate process pneumatization, middle concha hypertrophy, inferior concha hypertrophy, paradoxical middle concha and presence of septa in the maxillary sinus were registered. Cone beam computed tomography images were transferred to the SimPlant software thus right and left maxillary sinus volumes and dimensions were measured separately. RESULTS There was a negative and statistically significant relationship between age and left maxillary sinus width (p = 0.015). The relationships between gender and maxillary sinus volumes and dimensions were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Although there were significant relationships between the nasal septum deviation severity, middle concha hypertrophy, inferior concha hypertrophy, paradoxical middle concha, and presence of septa and maxillary sinus dimensions; there was no significant relationship between septal spur, nasal septum deviation direction, concha bullosa, uncinate process pneumatization, and maxillary sinus dimensions. No statistically significant relationship could be determined between maxillary sinus volume and anatomical variations of the sinonasal region. CONCLUSION According to our findings, while certain the variations were found to affect the sinus dimensions; none of the variations was found to be related to the maxillary sinus volume.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Understanding of maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH) and associated sinonasal variants is paramount to the diagnostic and therapeutic success of maxillary sinus and maxillary dental implant surgery. The purpose of this work was to explore the prevalence of MSH, frequency of mucosal thickening, and anatomical variations in the sinonasal complex. METHODS Retrospective case-control design based on cone beam CT images of dental patients with MSH and matched for age and gender. MSH type and sinonasal variables were recorded. RESULTS One thousand three hundred seventy cone beam CT scans were analyzed for MSH. MSH prevalence was 6% (n=82), matched with 82 controls= 100 females and 64 males, mean age 37.1±14.1 years. Most MSH were type I, 69.5%, 80.5% unilateral, 65.9% associated with no or mild mucosal thickening. Associated sinonasal anatomical variations were <27% except for deviated/hyperplastic (DH) meatus, 48.8%. Within the MSH group, significant associations were presented between MSH type, mucosal thickening, and DH nasal meatus. MSH group vs controls showed a significant difference in mucosal thickening (OR 5.2, 95% CI 2.0-17.3) and DH meatus (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.4-2.1). CONCLUSIONS A hypoplastic maxillary sinus with abnormal or absent uncinate process is associated with advanced mucosal thickening and may present with altered anatomy of the lateral wall of the nasal cavity causing its approximation to the orbital floor. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Pre-surgical knowledge of altered anatomy in the sinonasal complex is crucial in dental implant or sinus surgery.

Abstract
Background During implant treatment in the maxillary molar area, maxillary sinus floor augmentation is often performed to ameliorate the reduced alveolar bone height attributable to bone remodeling and pneumatization-induced expansion of the maxillary sinus. However, this augmentation may cause complications such as misplaced implants, artery damage, and maxillary sinus mucosal perforation; infections like maxillary sinusitis; and postsurgical complications such as bone graft leakage and postoperative nasal hemorrhaging. To reduce the complications during maxillary sinus floor augmentation and postoperative infections, we performed retrospective investigations of various systemic and local factors that influence pre-operative sinus mucosal thickness (SMT) by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Subjects included patients who underwent maxillary sinus floor augmentation in an edentulous maxillary molar area with a lateral approach. Pre-operative SMT, existing bone mass, and nasal septum deviation were measured using CBCT images. Relationships between SMT and the following influencing factors were investigated: (1) age, (2) sex, (3) systemic disease, (4) smoking, (5) period after tooth extraction, (6) reason for tooth extraction, (7) residual alveolar bone height (RBH), (8) sinus septa, and (9) nasal septum deviation. Correlations were also investigated for age and RBH (p < 0.05). Results We assessed 35 patients (40 sinuses; 11 male, 24 female). The average patient age was 58.90 ± 9.0 years (males, 57.9 ± 7.7 years; females, 59.9 ± 9.4 years; age range, 41–79 years). The average SMT was 1.09 ± 1.30 mm, incidence of SMT > 2 mm was 25.0%, incidence of SMT < 0.8 mm was 50.0%, and the average RBH was 2.14 ± 1.02 mm. The factors that influenced SMT included sex (p = 0.0078), period after tooth extraction (p = 0.0075), reason for tooth extraction (p = 0.020), sinus septa (p = 0.0076), and nasal septum deviation (p = 0.038). Conclusions Factors associated with higher SMT included male sex, interval following tooth extraction < 6 months, periapical lesions, sinus septa, and nasal septum deviation. Factors associated with SMT > 2 mm were sex and reason for tooth extraction, while factors associated with SMT < 0.8 mm were time following tooth extraction and nasal septum deviation. Despite the limitations of this study, these preoperative evaluations may be of utmost importance for safely conducting maxillary sinus floor augmentation.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Nasal septum deviation (NSD) increases the chance of nasal obstruction, sinusitis, and upper airway and middle ear infections and can affect vocal cord activity, beauty, and breathing. The present study investigated the prevalence of NSD and its relation to gender, age, and history of trauma using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on the data from CBCT examinations of 386 patients referred to two oral and maxillofacial radiology centers in Tehran, Iran, from January 2016 to January 2017. The presence of NSD and its type according to the Mladina's classification were evaluated. The effect of age, gender, and history of trauma on the prevalence of NSD was considered using a logistic regression. Results: 86.6% (confidence interval = 0.81, 0.91) of the patients showed NSD. The prevalence was 19.4% type 1, 6.2% type 2, 20.7% type 3, 5.4% type 4, 4.4% type 5, 0.3% type 6, and 30.3% with type 7. The logistic regression indicated that the chance of deviation of nasal septum increased with age and every 10-year increase in age increased the odds of septal deviation by 0.32 (P < 0.001 and odds ratio = 1.032). Gender (P = 0.094) and history of trauma (P = 0.79) had no effects on the chance of deviation of nasal septum. Conclusion: This study showed that the frequency of NSD was 86.6%, with type 7 being the most common type, followed by type 3 and 1. NSD showed no association with trauma and gender, and the increase in age increases the chance of NSD.

Abstract
PURPOSE Various mechanisms play an important role in the growth of maxillary sinus cavities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations of maxillary sinus volume (MSV) with nasal septal deviation (NSD), concha bullosa (CB) and impacted teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHODS From 55 patients, a total of 110 maxillary sinus images were obtained and examined. Data including age, gender, impacted third molar, canine teeth, NSD, and CB were examined. MSV was measured using the MIMICS software (Materialise HQ Technologielaan, Leuven, Belgium). All statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 21) software and p values < 0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS Mean volume of the right maxillary sinus was 13.566 cm3, while the left was 13.882 cm3. The rate of patients with right and left impacted third molar teeth was 49.1% and 47.3%, respectively. The rate of right and left impacted canines was 1.8% and 5.5%, respectively. NSD was found in 56.4% of CBCT examinations and right and left CB were observed in 30.9% and 32.7% of the patients' examinations, respectively. Males had a significantly higher mean sinus volume than females for both sides (p < 0.05). There were no significant correlations between MSV and age (p > 0.05). No significant differences were found between MSV and impacted teeth, NSD and CB (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION NSD, CB, impacted teeth, and age were not found to be related to MSV. Gender had an effect on MSV and males had higher mean sinus volume than females.
