Water-soluble main ions in precipitation over the southeastern Adriatic region: chemical composition and long-range transport

Sources, Ionic Composition and Acidic Properties of Bulk and Wet Atmospheric Deposition in the Eastern Middle Adriatic Region

Atmospheric bulk and wet deposition samples were collected simultaneously at the background coastal site in the Eastern Middle Adriatic region in order to assess the impact of major ions (Cl^-, NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, Na⁺, K⁺, NH₄⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺) on deposition acidity and distinguish the main sources. Higher ion levels were observed during the cold period, especially for Cl^-, Na⁺, Mg²⁺ and K⁺. Dust intrusion caused significant increases in levels of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and K⁺, while open-fire events increased the levels of K⁺. Deposition acidity showed seasonal differences as well as the influence of dust intrusion. Low ionic balance ratios indicated acidic deposition properties and the presence of organic anions. The highest neutralization ability was found for Ca²⁺, Na⁺ and NH₄⁺. Several natural (marine, crustal) and anthropogenic sources were determined, as well as the formation of secondary aerosols. Wet deposition was characterized by higher contribution of sea salt fraction compared to bulk deposition and lower contribution of crustal fraction.

Stable isotopes and chemical characteristics of precipitation in Hangzhou and Huzhou, East China

Atmospheric precipitation is a very important link in the water cycle. The characteristics of major ions (n = 341) and stable isotopes (δ²H, δ¹⁸O; n = 157) were analysed in Hangzhou and Huzhou, which are economically prosperous cities in East China. The δ²H and δ¹⁸O values of precipitation ranged from - 109.70 to 21.30‰ and from - 14.87 to - 0.95‰, respectively. Compared with the local meteoric water line (LMWL) of China, the slope and intercept of the LMWL were much higher in Hangzhou and Huzhou, which is related to the effects of the humid climate and less secondary evaporation. The δ²H and δ¹⁸O values were highest in spring because of the influence of air masses from the northern Asian continent and other nearby sources. In contrast, the air masses from the South China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean in the summer had the lowest δ²H and δ¹⁸O. The dominant ions in precipitation indicate that Ca²⁺, HCO₃^-, SO₄^2-, NH₄⁺ and NO₃^- are the main ions of precipitation in Hangzhou and Huzhou, and the dilution of precipitation leads to lower concentrations of ions in spring and summer, similar to the values found in most Chinese cities. The increase in motor vehicle use resulted in a lower [SO₄^2-]/[NO₃^-] ratio (1.64) of precipitation, indicating mixed acid rain in Hangzhou and Huzhou (HZS). Based on a combination of the correlation analysis, enrichment factors and source contributions, we determined that SO₄^2- and NO₃^- were introduced mainly from anthropogenic activities such as coal combustion and vehicle exhaust, accounting for 89% and 99%, respectively. The strong correlation between Cl^- and Na⁺, as well as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and K⁺, indicates that these ions commonly have marine and crustal origins, respectively, and 40% of Mg²⁺ comes from a marine source.

Water-soluble inorganic ions in urban aerosols of the continental part of Balkans (Belgrade) during the summer – autumn (2008)

Size-segregated aerosol samples were collected using six stages High Volume Cascade Impactor. Aerosol mass and water soluble ions concentrations were determined. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model was used to study the origin of air masses arriving to Belgrade in the investigated period. The obtained results of aerosol mass and water-soluble ion concentrations have been divided into six sub-data sets based on air mass categories. The highest average mass concentration of the fine mode (Dp ≤ 0.49 μm) was found for air masses coming to Belgrade from the southeast and northwest directions, and of the coarse mode (3.0 < Dp ≤7.2 μm) for air masses arriving from the northwest direction. The dominant contribution on wet deposition of water-soluble main ions in the South-Eastern Adriatic region

The results of content of water-soluble ions measured in 604 samples of precipitation collected in South-Eastern Adriatic region during 6 years have been analyzed. The HYSPLIT model was used to study the air mass paths. Although the ion concentrations of investigated ions in precipitation of air masses from the continental parts of Europe were significant, the total wet deposition is dominated by precipitation coming over the Mediterranean Sea. The sea salt components are significantly correlated. The correlations between Ca2+ and Mg2+, Ca2+ and SO42− and Ca2+ and K+ indicate the main terrigeneous ions.
