Rhizoremediation of oil-contaminated sites: a perspective on the Gulf War environmental catastrophe on the State of Kuwait

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on microorganism of phenanthrene and pyrene contaminated soils

A pot experiment was performed to investigate the effect of phytoremediation (CK, using tall fescue), fungi remediation (GV, using Glomus versiforme), bacterial remediation (PS, using Pseudomonas fluorescens Ps2-6), and microbial-phytoremediation (GVPS, using three species) on removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the microbial diversity in soils. Inoculation with G. versiforme and P. fluorescens could increase the biomass of tall fescue and the accumulation of phenanthrene (PHE) and pyrene (PYR) in plants. Among them, the highest PHE and PYR removal efficiencies and highest biomass of tall fescue were observed in the GVPS treatment and the microbial diversity in contaminated soil was changed, the result revealed that Proteobacteria and Ascomycota were the dominant bacterial phylum and fungal phylum in all treatments, while more Proteobacteria were detected in GVPS treatment. At the genus level, the abundance of Sphingomonas (3.17%), Pseudomonas (2.05%), and Fusarium (8.65%) treated with GVPS increased compared with other treatments. These pieces of evidence contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the combined microbial-phytoremediation strategies for PAHs-contaminated soils, especially the effects of microbial-phytoremediation on rhizosphere microbial diversity.

Evaluation of fatty acid derivatives in the remediation of aged PAH-contaminated soil and microbial community and degradation gene response

In this study, derivatives of two common fatty acids in plant root exudates, sodium palmitate and sodium linoleate (sodium aliphatates), were added to an aged Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil to estimate their effectiveness in the removal of PAHs. Sodium linoleate was more effective in lowering PAHs and especially high-molecular-weight (4-6 ring) PAHs (HMW-PAHs). Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) indicates that both amendments led to a shift in the soil bacterial community. Moreover, linear discriminant effect size (LEfSe) analysis demonstrates that the specific PAHs degraders Pseudomonas, Arenimonas, Pseudoxanthomonas and Lysobacter belonging to the γ-proteobacteria and Nocardia and Rhodococcus belonging to the Actinobacteria were the biomarkers of, respectively, sodium linoleate and sodium palmitate amendments. Correlation analysis suggests that four biomarkers in the sodium linoleate amendment treatment from γ-proteobacteria were all highly linearly negatively related to HMW-PAHs residues (p < 0.01) while two biomarkers in the sodium palmitate amendment treatment from Actinobacteria were highly linearly negatively related to LMW-PAHs residues (p < 0.01). Higher removal efficiency of PAHs (especially HMW-PAHs) in the sodium linoleate amendment treatment than in the sodium palmitate amendment treatment might be ascribed to the specific enrichment of microbes from the γ-proteobacteria. The bacterial functional KEGG orthologs (KOs) assigned to PAHs metabolism and functional C23O and C12O genes related to cleavage of the benzene ring were both up-regulated. These results provide new insight into the mechanisms of the two sodium aliphatate amendments in accelerating PAHs biodegradation and have implications for practical application in the remediation of PAHs-contaminated soils.

Enhancement of oil field-produced wastewater remediation by bacterially-augmented floating treatment wetlands

Plants and bacteria individually as well as in synergism with each other hold a great potential to degrade a wide range of environmental pollutants. Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) is an efficient and low-cost technology that uses the synergistic interaction between plant roots and microbes for in situ remediation of wastewater. The present study aims to assess the feasibility of FTW-based remediation of oil field-produced wastewater using an interaction between two plant species, Typha domingensis and Leptochloa fusca, in partnership with a consortium of crude oil-degrading bacterial species, Bacillus subtilis LORI66, Klebsiella sp. LCRI87, Acinetobacter Junii TYRH47, and Acinetobacter sp. BRSI56. All the treatments reduced contaminant levels, but T. domingensis, in combination with bacterial inoculation, exhibited the highest reduction in hydrocarbon (95%), COD (90%), and BOD content (93%) as compared to L. fusca. This combination maximally promoted increases in fresh biomass (31%), dry biomass (52%), and length (25%) of plants as well. This effect was further signified by the persistence of bacteria (40%) and considerable abundance (27%) and expression (28.5%) of the alkB gene in the rhizoplane of T. domingensis in comparison to that of L. fusca. The study, therefore, suggests that T. domingensis, in combination with bacterial consortium, has significant potential for treatment of oil field-produced water and can be exploited on large scale in FTWs.

Biochemical interactions between Glycine max L. silicon dioxide (SiO2) and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPR) for improving phytoremediation of soil contaminated with fenamiphos and its degradation products

Fenamiphos is a systematic nematicide-insecticide used extensively for the control of soil nematodes. Fenamiphos and oxidation products have been known to induce water pollution, soil pollution and ecotoxicological effects on aquatic organisms, as well as heath issues. This contaminant can be removed by phytoremediation. Herein, we tested several strategies to improve the effectiveness of this technology. A combination of G. max plus Pseudomonas fluorescens was more efficient than G. max plus Serratia marcescens or G. max alone in degrading fenamiphos to other metabolites. Three major metabolites, namely fenamiphos sulfoxide (FSO), fenamiphos sulfone (FSO2) and fenamiphos phenol (F-phenol), were detected in roots and leaves in which G. max amended with P. fluorescens or amended with S. marcescens produced a significant accumulation of FSO and FSO2 with higher amounts than for G. max alone. Leaf concentrations of FSO were always higher than in the roots, while FSO2 accumulated significantly more in G. max roots than in G. max leaves. In soil treated with fenamiphos, G. max roots and leaves alone, and in combined effects of plant and microorganisms, resulted in the disappearance of fenamiphos and the appearance of F-SO, F-SO2 and F-phenol, which in turn caused toxic stress in G. max and the resulting production of reactive oxygen species such as H2O2 with higher content and an increase in antioxidant GPX activity. Although a batch equilibrium technique showed that use of SiO2 resulted in the efficient removal of fenamiphos when compared with other treatments for removing adsorbed fenamiphos from soil, a fewer amount of fenamiphos was removed by G. max L. with SiO2. H2O2 content and GPX activity increased in G. max under fenamiphos treatment and its degradation products, while amended G. max with SiO2 or Argal led to a decrease in GPX activity and H2O2 content.

Anthropological contributions to historical ecology: 50 questions, infinite prospects

This paper presents the results of a consensus-driven process identifying 50 priority research questions for historical ecology obtained through crowdsourcing, literature reviews, and in-person workshopping. A deliberative approach was designed to maximize discussion and debate with defined outcomes. Two in-person workshops (in Sweden and Canada) over the course of two years and online discussions were peer facilitated to define specific key questions for historical ecology from anthropological and archaeological perspectives. The aim of this research is to showcase the variety of questions that reflect the broad scope for historical-ecological research trajectories across scientific disciplines. Historical ecology encompasses research concerned with decadal, centennial, and millennial human-environmental interactions, and the consequences that those relationships have in the formation of contemporary landscapes. Six interrelated themes arose from our consensus-building workshop model: (1) climate and environmental change and variability; (2) multi-scalar, multi-disciplinary; (3) biodiversity and community ecology; (4) resource and environmental management and governance; (5) methods and applications; and (6) communication and policy. The 50 questions represented by these themes highlight meaningful trends in historical ecology that distill the field down to three explicit findings. First, historical ecology is fundamentally an applied research program. Second, this program seeks to understand long-term human-environment interactions with a focus on avoiding, mitigating, and reversing adverse ecological effects. Third, historical ecology is part of convergent trends toward transdisciplinary research science, which erodes scientific boundaries between the cultural and natural.

Plant-bacteria partnerships for the remediation of persistent organic pollutants

High toxicity, bioaccumulation factor and widespread dispersal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) cause environmental and human health hazards. The combined use of plants and bacteria is a promising approach for the remediation of soil and water contaminated with POPs. Plants provide residency and nutrients to their associated rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria. In return, the bacteria support plant growth by the degradation and detoxification of POPs. Moreover, they improve plant growth and health due to their innate plant growth-promoting mechanisms. This review provides a critical view of factors that affect absorption and translocation of POPs in plants and the limitations that plant have to deal with during the remediation of POPs. Moreover, the synergistic effects of plant-bacteria interactions in the phytoremediation of organic pollutants with special reference to POPs are discussed.

Effect of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation on oats in saline-alkali soil contaminated by petroleum to enhance phytoremediation

To investigate the effect of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on phytoremediation in saline-alkali soil contaminated by petroleum, saline-alkali soil samples were artificially mixed with different amount of oil, 5 and 10 g/kg, respectively. Pot experiments with oat plants (Avena sativa) were conducted under greenhouse condition for 60 days. Plant biomass, physiological parameters in leaves, soil enzymes, and degradation rate of total petroleum hydrocarbon were measured. The result demonstrated that petroleum inhibited the growth of the plant; however, inoculation with PGPR in combination with AMF resulted in an increase in dry weight and stem height compared with noninoculated controls. Petroleum stress increased the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and free proline and the activities of the antioxidant enzyme such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase. Application of PGPR and AMF augmented the activities of three enzymes compared to their respective uninoculated controls, but decreased the MDA and free proline contents, indicating that PGPR and AMF could make the plants more tolerant to harmful hydrocarbon contaminants. It also improved the soil quality by increasing the activities of soil enzyme such as urease, sucrase, and dehydrogenase. In addition, the degradation rate of total petroleum hydrocarbon during treatment with PGPR and AMF in moderately contaminated soil reached a maximum of 49.73%. Therefore, we concluded the plants treated with a combination of PGPR and AMF had a high potential to contribute to remediation of saline-alkali soil contaminated with petroleum.

Phytomediated biostimulation of the autochthonous bacterial community for the acceleration of the depletion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in contaminated sediments

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of organic contaminants causing hazards to organisms including humans. The objective of the study was to validate the vegetation of dredged sediments with Phragmites australis as an exploitable biostimulation approach to accelerate the depletion of PAHs in nitrogen spiked sediments. Vegetation with Phragmites australis resulted in being an efficient biostimulation approach for the depletion of an aged PAHs contamination (229.67 ± 15.56 μg PAHs/g dry weight of sediment) in dredged sediments. Phragmites australis accelerated the oxidation of the PAHs by rhizodegradation. The phytobased approach resulted in 58.47% of PAHs depletion. The effects of the treatment have been analyzed in terms of both contaminant depletion and changes in relative abundance of the metabolically active Gram positive and Gram negative PAHs degraders. The metabolically active degraders were quantified both in the sediments and in the root endospheric microbial community. Quantitative real-time PCR reactions have been performed on the retrotranscribed transcripts encoding the Gram positive and Gram negative large α subunit (RHDα) of the aromatic ring hydroxylating dioxygenases. The Gram positive degraders resulted in being selectively favored by vegetation with Phragmites australis and mandatory for the depletion of the six ring condensed indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene and benzo[g,h,i]perylene.
