Synergic degradation of diesel by Scirpus triqueter and its endophytic bacteria

Exploring Endophytic Bacteria from Artemisia spp. and Beneficial Traits on Pea Plants

Endophytic microorganisms represent promising solutions to environmental challenges inherent in conventional agricultural practices. This study concentrates on the identification of endophytic bacteria isolated from the root, stem, and leaf tissues of four Artemisia plant species. Sixty-one strains were isolated and sequenced by 16S rDNA. Sequencing revealed diverse genera among the isolated bacteria from different Artemisia species, including Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, and Lysinibacillus. AR11 and VR24 obtained from the roots of A. absinthium and A. vulgaris demonstrated significant inhibition on Fusarium c.f. oxysporum mycelial growth. In addition, AR11, AR32, and CR25 exhibited significant activity in phosphatase solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and indole production, highlighting their potential to facilitate plant growth. A comparative analysis of Artemisia species showed that root isolates from A. absinthium, A. campestris, and A. vulgaris have beneficial properties for inhibiting pathogen growth and enhancing plant growth. AR11 with 100% similarity to Bacillus thuringiensis, could be considered a promising candidate for further investigation as microbial biofertilizers. This finding highlights their potential as environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical pesticides, thereby contributing to sustainable crop protection practices.

Synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals (Zn, Pb, and Cd) on phytoremediation potential of Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) in multi-contaminated soil

The environment in India is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to the occurrence of large anthropogenic activities, i.e., fuel combustion, mineral roasting, and biomass burning. Hence, 13 toxic PAHs were detected: phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benz(a) anthracene, ben-zo; (b) fluoranthene, benzo(k) fluoranthene, benzo(a) pyrene, benzo(ghi)perylene, dibenz (ah) anthracene, indeno1,2,3-(cd) pyrene, coronene and coronene in the environment (i.e., ambient particulate matter, road dust, sludge, and sewage) of the most industrialized area. Pollutants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons co-contaminate the soil and pose a significant hazard to the ecosystem because these pollutants are harmful to both humans and the environment. Phytoremediation is an economical plant-based natural approach for soil clean-up that has no negative impact on ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pyrene (500 mg kg-1), Zn (150 mg kg-1), Pb (150 mg kg-1), and Cd (150 mg kg-1) alone and in combination on the phytoextraction efficiency of Medicago sativa growing in contaminated soil. Plant biomass, biochemical activities, translocation factors, accumulation of heavy metals, and pyrene removal were determined. After 60 days of planting, compared with those of the control plants, the growth parameters, biomass, and chlorophyll content of the M. sativa plants were significantly lower, and the reactive oxygen species activity, such as proline and polyphenol content and metallothionein protein content, was markedly greater in the pyrene and heavy metal-polluted soils. Furthermore, the combined toxicity of pyrene and all three metals on M. sativa growth and biochemical parameters was significantly greater than that of pyrene, Zn, Pb, or Cd alone, indicating the synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals on cytotoxicity. Pyrene stress increased Cd accumulation in M. sativa. After pyrene exposure alone or in combination with Zn-pyrene, a greater pyrene removal rate (85.5-81.44%) was observed than that in Pb-pyrene, Cd-pyrene, and Zn-Pb-Cd-pyrene polluted soils (62.78-71.27%), indicating that zinc can enhance the removal of pyrene from contaminated soil. The resulting hypotheses demonstrated that Medicago sativa can be used as a promising phytoremediation agent for co-contaminated soil.

Characterization of endophytic bacteriome diversity and associated beneficial bacteria inhabiting a macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes

Introduction

The endosphere of a plant is an interface containing a thriving community of endobacteria that can affect plant growth and potential for bioremediation. Eichhornia crassipes is an aquatic macrophyte, adapted to estuarine and freshwater ecosystems, which harbors a diverse bacterial community. Despite this, we currently lack a predictive understanding of how E. crassipes taxonomically structure the endobacterial community assemblies across distinct habitats (root, stem, and leaf).

Methods

In the present study, we assessed the endophytic bacteriome from different compartments using 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis and verified the in vitro plant beneficial potential of isolated bacterial endophytes of E. crassipes.

Results and discussion

Plant compartments displayed a significant impact on the endobacterial community structures. Stem and leaf tissues were more selective, and the community exhibited a lower richness and diversity than root tissue. The taxonomic analysis of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) showed that the major phyla belonged to Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota (> 80% in total). The most abundant genera in the sampled endosphere was Delftia in both stem and leaf samples. Members of the family Rhizobiaceae, such as in both stem and leaf samples. Members of the family Rhizobiaceae, such as Allorhizobium- Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium were mainly associated with leaf tissue, whereas the genera Nannocystis and Nitrospira from the families Nannocystaceae and Nitrospiraceae, respectively, were statistically significantly associated with root tissue. Piscinibacter and Steroidobacter were putative keystone taxa of stem tissue. Most of the endophytic bacteria isolated from E. crassipes showed in vitro plant beneficial effects known to stimulate plant growth and induce plant resistance to stresses. This study provides new insights into the distribution and interaction of endobacteria across different compartments of E. crassipes Future study of endobacterial communities, using both culture-dependent and -independent techniques, will explore the mechanisms underlying the wide-spread adaptability of E. crassipesto various ecosystems and contribute to the development of efficient bacterial consortia for bioremediation and plant growth promotion.

Effects of bioaugmentation by isolated Achromobacter xylosoxidans BP1 on PAHs degradation and microbial community in contaminated soil

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of organic pollutants ubiquitous and persistent in soil. In order to provide a viable solution for bioremediation of PAHs-contaminated soil, a strain of Achromobacter xylosoxidans BP1 with superior PAHs degradation ability was isolated from contaminated soil at a coal chemical site in northern China. The degradation of phenanthrene (PHE) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) by strain BP1 was investigated in three different liquid phase cultures, and the removal rates of PHE and BaP by strain BP1 were 98.47% and 29.86% after 7 days under the conditions of PHE and BaP as the only carbon source, respectively. In the medium with the coexistence of PHE and BaP, the removal rates of BP1 were 89.44% and 9.42% after 7 days, respectively. Then, strain BP1 was investigated for its feasibility in remediating PAH-contaminated soil. Among the four PAHs-contaminated soils treated differently, the treatment inoculated with BP1 exhibited higher removal rates of PHE and BaP (p < 0.05), especially the CS-BP1 treatment (inoculation of BP1 into unsterilized PAHs-contaminated soil) showed 67.72%, 13.48% removal of PHE and BaP, respectively, over 49 days of incubation. Bioaugmentation also significantly increased the activity of dehydrogenase and catalase in the soil (p＜0.05). Furthermore, the effect of bioaugmentation on the removal of PAHs was investigated by measuring the activity of dehydrogenase (DH) and catalase (CAT) during incubation. Among them, the DH and CAT activities of CS-BP1 and SCS-BP1 (inoculation of BP1 into sterilized PAHs-contaminated soil) treatments inoculated with strain BP1 were significantly higher than those of treatments without BP1 addition during incubation (p < 0.01). The structure of the microbial community varied among treatments, but the Proteobacteria phylum showed the highest relative abundance in all treatments of the bioremediation process, and most of the bacteria with higher relative abundance at the genus level also belonged to the Proteobacteria phylum. Prediction of microbial functions in soil by FAPROTAX analysis showed that bioaugmentation enhanced microbial functions associated with the degradation of PAHs. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of Achromobacter xylosoxidans BP1 as a PAH-contaminated soil degrader for the risk control of PAHs contamination.

Inoculation effect of Pseudomonas sp. TF716 on N2O emissions during rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil

The demand for rhizoremediation technology that can minimize greenhouse gas emissions while effectively removing pollutants in order to mitigate climate change has increased. The inoculation effect of N₂O-reducing Pseudomonas sp. TF716 on N₂O emissions and on remediation performance during the rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil planted with tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) or maize (Zea mays) was investigated. Pseudomonas sp. TF716 was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tall fescue. The maximum N₂O reduction rate of TF716 was 18.9 mmol N₂O g dry cells⁻¹ h⁻¹, which is superior to the rates for previously reported Pseudomonas spp. When Pseudomonas sp. TF716 was added to diesel-contaminated soil planted with tall fescue, the soil N₂O-reduction potential was 2.88 times higher than that of soil with no inoculation during the initial period (0–19 d), and 1.08–1.13 times higher thereafter. However, there was no enhancement in the N₂O-reduction potential for the soil planted with maize following inoculation with strain TF716. In addition, TF716 inoculation did not significantly affect diesel degradation during rhizoremediation, suggesting that the activity of those microorganisms involved in diesel degradation was unaffected by TF716 treatment. Analysis of the dynamics of the bacterial genera associated with N₂O reduction showed that Pseudomonas had the highest relative abundance during the rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil planted with tall fescue and treated with strain TF716. Overall, these results suggest that N₂O emissions during the rhizoremediation of diesel-contaminated soil using tall fescue can be reduced with the addition of Pseudomonas sp. TF716.

The invisible life inside plants: Deciphering the riddles of endophytic bacterial diversity

Endophytic bacteria often promote plant growth and protect their host plant against pathogens, herbivores, and abiotic stresses including drought, increased salinity or pollution. Current agricultural practices are being challenged in terms of climate change and the ever-increasing demand for food. Therefore, the rational exploitation of bacterial endophytes to increase the productivity and resistance of crops appears to be very promising. However, the efficient and larger-scale use of bacterial endophytes for more effective and sustainable agriculture is hindered by very little knowledge on molecular aspects of plant-endophyte interactions and mechanisms driving bacterial communities in planta. In addition, since most of the information on bacterial endophytes has been obtained through culture-dependent techniques, endophytic bacterial diversity and its full biotechnological potential still remain highly unexplored. In this study, we discuss the diversity and role of endophytic populations as well as complex interactions that the endophytes have with the plant and vice versa, including the interactions leading to plant colonization. A description of biotic and abiotic factors influencing endophytic bacterial communities is provided, along with a summary of different methodologies suitable for determining the diversity of bacterial endophytes, mechanisms governing the assembly and structure of bacterial communities in the endosphere, and potential biotechnological applications of endophytes in the future.

Plant-assisted remediation of hydrocarbons in water and soil: Application, mechanisms, challenges and opportunities

Due to the increasing importance of diesel and petroleum for industrial development during the last century, petrochemical effluents have significantly contributed to the pollution of aquatic and soil environments. The contamination generated by petroleum hydrocarbons can endanger not only humans but also the environment. Phytoremediation or plant-assisted remediation can be considered one of the best technologies to manage petroleum product-contaminated water and soil. The main advantages of this method are that it is environmentally-friendly, potentially cost-effective and does not require specialised equipment. The scope of this review includes a description of hydrocarbon pollutants from petrochemical industries, their toxicity impacts and methods of treatment and degradation. The major emphasis is on phytodegradation (phytotransformation) and rhizodegradation since these mechanisms are the most favourable alternatives for soil and water reclamation of hydrocarbons using tropical plants. In addressing these issues, this review also covers challenges to retrieve the environment (soil and water) from petroleum contaminations through phytoremediation, and its opportunities to remove or reduce the negative environmental impacts of petroleum contaminations and restore damaged ecosystems with sustainable ways to keep healthy life for the future.

Phytoremediation effect of Medicago sativa colonized by Piriformospora indica in the phenanthrene and cadmium co-contaminated soil

BACKGROUND

The coexistence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals has deleterious effects on environmental quality. Few reports have studied the mechanisms of plant inoculation with Piriformospora indica to remediate PAH-metal co-contaminated soil by analyzing the chemical speciation of the contaminants. This study investigated the influence of the inoculation of Medicago sativa with P. indica to remediate soil co-contaminated with phenanthrene (a kind of PAH) and cadmium (a heavy metal) by analyzing plant growth, physiological parameters and chemical speciation in rhizosphere and nonrhizosphere soils.

RESULTS

The presence of P. indica significantly increased plant tolerance, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry and electron transport rate values in phenanthrene- and/or cadmium-contaminated soil. P. indica inoculation in M. sativa roots increased fluorescein diacetate activities in soils contaminated with phenanthrene, cadmium or both, especially in the nonrhizosphere. The presence of phenanthrene prevented the inoculated plant from accumulating cadmium to some extent, whereas the presence of cadmium did not prevent the degradation of phenanthrene in either the rhizosphere or the nonrhizosphere after P. indica colonization. Although the low bioavailability of cadmium in the rhizosphere restricted its transportation into the stem, P. indica colonization in plants effectively increased cadmium accumulation in roots in soil co-contaminated with cadmium and phenanthrene.

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, this work provides a theoretical basis for the use of P. indica combined with M. sativa for the remediation of PAH-metal co-contaminated soil.

Effects and mechanisms of phytoalexins on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by an endophytic bacterium isolated from ryegrass

Plant-endophyte synergism has been demonstrated to play a key role in the phytoremediation of contaminated water and soil. Phytoalexins, a type of chemical component in the plant apoplast, can be produced by plants in response to stimulation by endophytes. Phytoalexins may have distinct effects on the nutritional and metabolic functions of endophytes; however, direct evidence is not available to prove the effect of phytoalexins on the hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOC)-degradation activity of endophytes. In this paper, three different types of phytoalexins, coumarin, resveratrol and rutin, were selected to study their effect on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by an endophytic bacterium Methylobacterium extorquens C1. The effects of the three phytoalexins on bacterial sorption and intracellular enzymatic activities were tested to further analyze the mechanism by which the phytoalexins affect the PAH degradation performance of M. extorquens C1. The results showed that the removal rate of PAHs by M. extorquens C1 increased in the presence of low levels of the three phytoalexins. The most effective concentrations of coumarin, resveratrol and rutin were 0.20, 0.15, and 0.25 mg/L, respectively, and the removal rate of PAHs was increased by approximately 18.3-35.0%. At the optimal concentrations, the three phytoalexins significantly promoted the sorption of PAHs by M. extorquens C1, and also enhanced the activities of catechol dioxygenases and dehydrogenase of M. extorquens C1. The positive effect of phytoalexins on both bacterial sorption and intracellular enzymatic activities promotes the overall removal of PAHs from endophytes. These results may deepen our understanding of plant-microbe cooperative mechanisms in the degradation of organic pollutants and provide a new approach for chemically enhanced bioremediation in the future.

Role of Festuca rubra and Festuca arundinacea in determinig the functional and genetic diversity of microorganisms and of the enzymatic activity in the soil polluted with diesel oil

The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of two grass species, i.e. red fescue (Festuca rubra) and tall fescue (F. arundinacea), on the functional and genetic diversity of soil-dwelling microorganisms and on the enzymatic activity of soil not polluted and polluted with diesel oil. Grasses were examined for their effectiveness in accelerating degradation of PAHs introduced into soil with diesel oil. A growing experiment was conducted in Kick-Brauckman pots. The soil not polluted and polluted with diesel oil (7 cm3 kg-1 d.m.) was determined for the count of bacteria, colony development index, ecophysiological diversity index, functional diversity (using Biolog system), genetic diversity of bacteria (using NGS), enzymatic activity, and content of hydrocarbons. Study results demonstrated disturbed homeostasis of soil. The toxic effect of diesel oil on grasses alleviate with time since soil pollution. The yield of the first swath of red fescue decreased by 98% and that of tall fescue by 92%, whereas the yields of the second swath decreased by 82% and 89%, and these of the third swath by 50% and 47%, respectively. Diesel oil diminished also the functional and genetic diversity of bacteria. The use of grasses significantly decreased contents of C6-C12 (gasoline total), C12-C35 mineral oils, BTEX (volatile aromatic hydrocarbons), and PAHs in the soil, as well as enabled restoring the microbiological equilibrium in the soil, and increased functional and genetic diversity of bacteria. For this reason, both analyzed grass species, i.e. Festuca rubra and F. arundinacea, may be recommended for the remediation of soil polluted with diesel oil.

Selenium enhanced phytoremediation of diesel contaminated soil by Alternanthera philoxeroides

Using a 60-day pot culture experiment, we investigated the effect of selenium on phytoremediation of soil containing high-level diesel by Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed). Diesel (20 g kg^-1) decreased the growth of A. philoxeroides and induced oxidative stress, as indicated by tissue levels of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Adding Se (0.5 or 1.5 mg kg^-1) to diesel-treated soil alleviated oxidative stress and improved biomass production, and the low dose was as effective as the high dose. After 60 days, the reduction in rhizospheric soil diesel was 20.1 ± 0.55% without Se and 35.2 ± 3.6% with Se, showing a significant increase in efficiency. Again, the low Se dose was as effective as the high dose. These findings advance the field phytoremediation by demonstrating that Se, at 0.5 mg kg^-1, enhances removal and increases plant tolerance to petroleum hydrocarbons.

Effects of pharmaceuticals on microbial communities and activity of soil enzymes in mesocosm-scale constructed wetlands

Cyperus alternifolius based mesocosm-scale constructed wetland was employed to remove pharmaceuticals. We investigated the microbial community composition using phosphor lipid fatty acids (PFLAs) analysis and substrate enzyme activity during long-term exposure to pharmaceuticals in mesocosm-scale constructed wetlands. The results showed that there was no visible inhibition effect of pharmaceuticals on CW substrate enzymes activities in the experimental range (0-500 μg/L). Microbial communities, as revealed by PFLAs, were enhanced by the presence of plants, while the PFLAs content was highest when the pharmaceutical concentration was 10 μg/L or 30 μg/L at CWs. Except for anaerobic bacteria and Saturated fatty acids, the maximum PLFAs levels were reached when the pharmaceuticals were 10 μg/L or 30 μg/L, while Bacteria, G (-), fungal bacteria, Aerobic bacteria and Monounsaturated fatty acids were remarkably affected by high pharmaceuticals (100-500 μg/L). However, the main microbial florae were not changed among the treatments. In this study, the removal efficiencies of the studied pharmaceuticals in Planted (30) was greatest, which could be attributed to the higher microbial biomass. These results indicate that C. alternifolius can phytoremediate pharmaceutical-contaminated waters in CWs. Individual fatty acid cannot be used to represent specific species; therefore, more approaches to species identification such as rRNA-based methods must be included in future studies to better understand the metabolic mechanisms of microorganisms involved in the removal of studied pharmaceuticals and improve the performance of CWs.

Variation of the Bacterial Community in the Rhizoplane Iron Plaque of the Wetland Plant Typha latifolia

The survival of wetland plants in iron, sulfur and heavy metals-rich mine tailing ponds has been commonly attributed to the iron plaque (IP) on the root surface that acts as a protective barrier. However, the contribution of bacteria potentially regulates the iron-sulfur cycle and heavy metal exclusion at the root surface has not been studied in depth, particularly from a microbial ecology perspective. In this study, a pot experiment using Typha latifolia, a typical wetland plant, in non-polluted soil (NP) and tailing soil (T) was conducted. Samples from four zones, comprising non-rhizosphere soil (NR), rhizosphere soil (R) and internal (I) and external (E) layers of iron plaque, were collected from the NP and T and analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Simpson index of the genus level showed greater diversities of bacterial community in the NP and its I zone is the most important part of the rhizosphere. PICRUSt predicted that the I zones in both NP and T harbored most of the functional genes. Specifically, functional genes related to sulfur relay and metabolism occurred more in the I zone in the T, whereas those related to iron acquisition and carbon and nitrogen circulation occurred more in the I zone in the NP. Analysis of dominant bacterial communities at genus level showed highest abundance of heavy metal resistant genus Burkholderia in the E zones in both soils, indicating that heavy metal resistance of Typha latifolia driven by Burkholderia mainly occurred at the external layer of IP. Moreover, many bacterial genera, such as Acidithiobacillus, Ferritrophicum, Thiomonas, Metallibacterium and Sideroxydans, involved in iron and sulfur metabolisms were found in the T and most showed higher abundance in the I zone than in the other zones. This work, as the first endeavor to separate the iron plaque into external and internal layers and investigate the variations of the bacterial communities therein, can provide an insight for further understanding the survival strategy of wetland plants, e.g., Typha latifolia, in extreme environment.

Effect of Bacillus subtilis and NTA-APG on pyrene dissipation in phytoremediation of nickel co-contaminated wetlands by Scirpus triqueter

A complex mix of organic pollutants and heavy metal made the remediation of contaminated wetlands more difficult. Few research focus on the remediation for pyrene enhanced by chemical reagents and pyrene degrading bacteria in the nickel co-contaminated soil. In this paper, the effect of chemical reagents (nitrilotriacetic acid and alkyl polyglucoside) and Bacillus subtilis on pyrene dissipation in phytoremediation of nickel co-contaminated soil by Scirpus triqueter was investigated. Similar seedlings of Scirpus triqueter were moved to uncontaminated soil and pyrene-nickel co-contaminated soil. The pots (14.8 cm diameter and 8.8 cm height) were set up in greenhouse and treated in different ways. After 60 days, plant biomass, radial oxygen loss (ROL), soil dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and pyrene concentration in soil were determined. Results showed that ROL rate and DHA in different groups was positively correlated with pyrene dissipation from soil. In the process of remediation, chemical reagents might have an indirect slight effect on pyrene dissipation (pyrene dissipation increased 21%) by affecting DHA firstly and redistributing pyrene fractions in the presence of pyrene degrading bacteria. Pyrene degrading bacteria were likely to affect pyrene dissipation by impacting ROL rate and DHA and played a more vital role in contributing to pyrene dissipation (pyrene dissipation increased 45%) from wetland. This study demonstrated that phytoremediation for pyrene in nickel co-contaminated soil by Scirpus triqueter can be enhanced by the application of NTA-APG and pyrene degrading bacteria and they could be reasonably restore the ecological environment of PAH-contaminated wetlands.

Se enhanced phytoremediation of diesel in soil by Trifolium repens

A pot-culture experiment was conducted to assess the effects of selenium (Se) (0.5 mg kg^-1) on Trifolium repens exposed to various levels of diesel (0, 15, 20, 25 g kg^-1) for 30 days and 60 days. Exposure to diesel for 60 day led to concentration-dependent decreases in root morphogenesis, chlorophyll content and CAT activity, and to dose-dependent increases in MDA content and SOD activity. The residual diesel concentration in soil increased and the removal efficiency decreased with soil diesel concentration. The chlorophyll content and residual diesel concentration after were slightly higher at 30 days than at 60days. Application of Se to soil increased Trifolium repens tolerance to diesel and significantly increased the phytoremediation effect at 60 days, with a removal rate of 36 ± 8%, compared to 28 ± 7% in the control. These results contribute to the ongoing effort to develop an effective phytoremediation system for soils highly contaminated by diesel.

Rhizospheric microorganisms as a solution for the recovery of soils contaminated by petroleum: A review

Petroleum is currently the world's main energy source, and its demand is expected to increase in coming years. Its intense exploitation can lead to an increase in the number of environmental accidents, such as spills and leaks, and an increase in the generation of environmental liabilities resulting from refining. Due to its hydrophobic characteristics and slow process of biodegradation, petroleum can remain in the environment for a long time and its toxicity can cause a negative impact on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with the main negative effects related to its carcinogenic potential for both animals and humans. The objective of the present review is to discuss environmental contamination by oil, conventional treatment techniques and bioremediation an alternative tool for recovery petroleum-contaminated soils, focusing on the rhizodegradation process, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), a phytoremediation strategy in which the microorganisms that colonize the roots of phytoremediatior plants are responsible for the biodegradation of petroleum. These microorganisms can be selected and tested individually or in the form of consortia to evaluate their potential for oil degradation, or even to measure the use of biosurfactants produced by them to constitute tools for the development of environmental recovery strategies and biotechnological application.

Assessment of Pb and pyrene accumulation in Scirpus triqueter assisted by combined alkyl polyglucoside and nitrilotriacetic acid application

To understand the accumulation and uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals by plants is an important part of the assessment of phytoremediation for PAHs and heavy metals co-contaminated soil. This study was an investigation of the accumulation and uptake of pyrene and lead (Pb) by Scirpus triqueter under the condition of alkyl polyglucoside (APG) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) combined application. The results indicated that the accumulation of Pb by S. triqueter was significantly improved by NTA and APG addition into the soil. The pyrene accumulation in plant was also increased after application of APG when compared to the control treatment. However, the pyrene accumulation was decreased when APG was applied together with NTA. SEM and TEM images of root surface suggested that more Pb in the soil transferred to the plant by combined application of APG and NTA. More importantly, TEM images of xylem cells of S.triqueter root showed that permeability of cell membrane was improved by application of APG.

Efficient phytoremediation of organic contaminants in soils using plant-endophyte partnerships

Soil pollution with organic contaminants is one of the most intractable environmental problems today, posing serious threats to humans and the environment. Innovative strategies for remediating organic-contaminated soils are critically needed. Phytoremediation, based on the synergistic actions of plants and their associated microorganisms, has been recognized as a powerful in situ approach to soil remediation. Suitable combinations of plants and their associated endophytes can improve plant growth and enhance the biodegradation of organic contaminants in the rhizosphere and/or endosphere, dramatically expediting the removal of organic pollutants from soils. However, for phytoremediation to become a more widely accepted and predictable alternative, a thorough understanding of plant-endophyte interactions is needed. Many studies have recently been conducted on the mechanisms of endophyte-assisted phytoremediation of organic contaminants in soils. In this review, we highlight the superiority of organic pollutant-degrading endophytes for practical applications in phytoremediation, summarize alternative strategies for improving phytoremediation, discuss the fundamental mechanisms of endophyte-assisted phytoremediation, and present updated information regarding the advances, challenges, and new directions in the field of endophyte-assisted phytoremediation technology.

Phytoremediation effect of Scirpus triqueter inoculated plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) on different fractions of pyrene and Ni in co-contaminated soils

At present, few reveal the mechanism of inoculation plants with PGPB to remediate PAH-metal co-contaminated soil by analyzing the chemical speciations of contaminants. This study investigated the influence of inoculation plants with PGPB on different fractions of pyrene and Ni in rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soil. The results demonstrated that the addition of PGPB brought the extensive increase of FDA activities in pyrene-Ni co-contaminated soil. PGPB increased the resistance of plants in nickel and pyrene-Ni contaminated soil, but decreased the plant biomass in single pyrene contaminated soil. The addition of PGPB efficiently decreased bioaccessible fractions of pyrene and increased the bioavailability of Ni in both rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soil. Although inoculation plants with PGPB significantly increased the accumulation of Ni in single Ni and pyrene-Ni co-contaminated soil, the poor bioavailability of Ni in rhizospheric soil still restricted the phytoremediation of the heavy metal. The presence of pyrene hindered the inoculated plant from accumulating Ni to some extent. On the contrary, the presence of Ni significantly promoted the degradation of pyrene in both rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soil after inoculation plants with PGPB.

Nitrate removal and bioenergy production in constructed wetland coupled with microbial fuel cell: Establishment of electrochemically active bacteria community on anode

The constructed wetland coupled with microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) systems operated at different substrate concentration and pH influents were evaluated for bioelectricity generation, contaminant removal and microbial community structure. Performance of CW-MFC was evaluated at organic loading rate of 75.3gCODm^-3d^-1 and pH gradients of (5.18±0.14, 7.31±0.13, and 8.75±0.12) using carbon fiber felt as electrodes. Peak power density was observed at slightly neutral influent condition. Compared with the open circuit CW-MFC, average COD and NO₃-N removal efficiency in CW-MFC increased by 8.3% and 40.2% respectively under slightly neutral pH of influents. However, the removal efficiency and bioenergy production have been inhibited with acidic influents. The relative abundance of beta-Proteobacteria, nitrobacteria and denitrifying bacteria was significantly promoted in closed-circuit CW-MFC. Using of CW-MFC as a biochemical method for nitrate removal and bioelectricity generation under slightly neutral and alkaline influent conditions was a promising technology.

The Interaction between Plants and Bacteria in the Remediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons: An Environmental Perspective

Widespread pollution of terrestrial ecosystems with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) has generated a need for remediation and, given that many PHCs are biodegradable, bio- and phyto-remediation are often viable approaches for active and passive remediation. This review focuses on phytoremediation with particular interest on the interactions between and use of plant-associated bacteria to restore PHC polluted sites. Plant-associated bacteria include endophytic, phyllospheric, and rhizospheric bacteria, and cooperation between these bacteria and their host plants allows for greater plant survivability and treatment outcomes in contaminated sites. Bacterially driven PHC bioremediation is attributed to the presence of diverse suites of metabolic genes for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, along with a broader suite of physiological properties including biosurfactant production, biofilm formation, chemotaxis to hydrocarbons, and flexibility in cell-surface hydrophobicity. In soils impacted by PHC contamination, microbial bioremediation generally relies on the addition of high-energy electron acceptors (e.g., oxygen) and fertilization to supply limiting nutrients (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium) in the face of excess PHC carbon. As an alternative, the addition of plants can greatly improve bioremediation rates and outcomes as plants provide microbial habitats, improve soil porosity (thereby increasing mass transfer of substrates and electron acceptors), and exchange limiting nutrients with their microbial counterparts. In return, plant-associated microorganisms improve plant growth by reducing soil toxicity through contaminant removal, producing plant growth promoting metabolites, liberating sequestered plant nutrients from soil, fixing nitrogen, and more generally establishing the foundations of soil nutrient cycling. In a practical and applied sense, the collective action of plants and their associated microorganisms is advantageous for remediation of PHC contaminated soil in terms of overall cost and success rates for in situ implementation in a diversity of environments. Mechanistically, there remain biological unknowns that present challenges for applying bio- and phyto-remediation technologies without having a deep prior understanding of individual target sites. In this review, evidence from traditional and modern omics technologies is discussed to provide a framework for plant-microbe interactions during PHC remediation. The potential for integrating multiple molecular and computational techniques to evaluate linkages between microbial communities, plant communities and ecosystem processes is explored with an eye on improving phytoremediation of PHC contaminated sites.

Combined remediation of pyrene-contaminated soil with a coupled system of persulfate oxidation and phytoremediation with ryegrass

The in situ chemical oxidation technology (ISCO) and phytoremediation for PAHs have been studied respectively, but few focus on the feasibility of combining persulfate with ryegrass. This literature revealed the effect of persulfate oxidation on the growth of ryegrass and the removal ratios of pyrene in the couple system of persulfate oxidation and phytoremediation. The results demonstrated that half of pyrene in test soil was oxidized by persulfate in 7 days and then the residual pyrene concentration was decreased to a lower level by ryegrass in the following 2 months in oxidation treatment and drip washing and plants (OWP) and oxidation treatment and drip washing and plants and fertilization (OWFP) treatment. Ryegrass could grow well after persulfate oxidation with the oxidized soil washed by water. Ryegrass in OWP and OWFP treatments had higher ratios of overground and underground biomass. However, the seeds of ryegrass cannot germinate when drip washing was omitted. Pyrene together with residual persulfate changed soil enzyme activities. Drip washing and the growth of ryegrass made soil enzyme activities tend to returned to normal levels. Persulfate oxidation and phytoremediation were compatible to make contributions to the dissipation of pyrene. Persulfate oxidation activated by heat had higher removal efficiency of PAHs and phytoremediation could further decrease the pyrene concentration in spiked soil.

Effect of alkyl polyglucoside and nitrilotriacetic acid combined application on lead/pyrene bioavailability and dehydrogenase activity in co-contaminated soils

At present, few research focus on the phytoremediation for organic pollutants and heavy metals enhanced by surfactants and chelate agents in the combined contaminated soils or sediments. In this study, the effect of a novel combined addition of alkyl polyglucoside (APG) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) into pyrene and lead (Pb) co-contaminated soils on bioaccessiblity of pyrene/Pb and dehydrogenase activities (DHA) was studied. Through the comparison of the results with the alone and combined application, synergistic effect on bioaccessiblity of pyrene and Pb was found while APG and NTA was applied together. Results also indicated a significant promotion on the DHA in mixed addition of APG and NTA. In addition, correlation and principal component analysis were performed to better understand the relationship among APG/NTA, bioaccessiblity of pyrene/Pb and the DHA. Results showed that APG and NTA can affect DHA directly by themselves but also can affect DHA indirectly by changing bioaccessible pyrene and exchangeable Pb.
