Research progress on remediation of organochlorine pesticide contamination in soil

Deteriorated soil pollution has grown into a worldwide environmental concern over the years. Organochlorine pesticide (OCP) residues, featured with ubiquity, persistence and refractoriness, are one of the main pollution sources, causing soil degradation, fertility decline and nutritional imbalance, and severely impacting soil ecology. Furthermore, residual OCPs in soil may enter the human body along with food chain accumulation and pose a serious health threat. To date, many remediation technologies including physicochemical and biological ways for organochlorine pollution have been developed at home and abroad, but none of them is a panacea suitable for all occasions. Rational selection and scientific decision-making are grounded in in-depth knowledge of various restoration techniques. However, soil pollution treatment often encounters the interference of multiple factors (climate, soil properties, cost, restoration efficiency, etc.) in complex environments, and there is still a lack of systematic summary and comparative analysis of different soil OCP removal methods. Thus, to better guide the remediation of contaminated soil, this review summarized the most commonly used strategies for OCP removal, evaluated their merits and limitations and discussed the application scenarios of different methods. It will facilitate the development of efficient, inexpensive and environmentally friendly soil remediation strategies for sustainable agricultural and ecological development.

Simultaneous adsorption-photocatalytic treatment with TiO2-Sep nanocomposites for in situ remediation of sodium pentachlorophenol contaminated aqueous and soil

Sodium pentachlorophenol (NaPCP) is a highly toxic and persistent organic pollutant. With sepiolite as the support, a series of TiO₂-Sep nanocomposites (NCs) with different Ti/Sep ratios were developed. The objective was to understand the effect of Ti/Sep ratio on the structure and activity of the NCs in aqueous and soil systems and to evaluate the feasibility of the NCs for in situ soil remediation. The prepared NCs were characterized with XRD, SEM, TEM, and N₂ adsorption-desorption, respectively. The results showed that high surface area and good dispersion of TiO₂ on sepiolite surface were obtained. The photocatalytic activities in aqueous and soil of the as-developed NCs were examined using NaPCP as a model pollutant. Compared with bare sepiolite and TiO₂, the heterogeneous NCs showed significantly higher photocatalytic performance in decomposing NaPCP, and the photocatalytic activities varied with the content of TiO₂ in the NCs. In aqueous media, treatment with TiO₂-S-30 showed excellent degradation efficiency with about 90% NaPCP decomposed in 140 min. Nevertheless, the sample TiO₂-S-20 promotes maximum rate reduction of NaPCP with above 90% within 20-h irradiation in soil. The results indicate that an appropriate Ti/Sep ratio could significantly enhance the activities of NCs on NaPCP remediation and the role of carrier sepiolite is more important in soil media than that in aqueous phase. The excellent performance of the TiO₂-Sep in wastewater degradation and soil remediation can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the high photocatalytic activity of TiO₂ nanoparticles and the strong adsorption capacity of sepiolite nanofibers. This work revealed that sepiolite adsorption coupled with TiO₂ photocatalysis can be one promising technique for in situ remediation of NaPCP-contaminated soil.

Study on the preparation of the hierarchical porous CX-TiO2 composites and their selective degradation of PHE solubilized in soil washing eluent

A series of CX-TiO₂(Carbon Xerogel- TiO₂) composites with a hierarchical porous structure were obtained through the sol-gel method followed by drying and carbonization, and have been applied to treating solubilizing wastewater containing a high concentration of phenanthrene (PHE). The characterizations demonstrated that the CX-TiO₂ exhibits a hierarchical porous structure, with particles of carbon and P25 being uniformly in the matrix. Removal efficiency of CX-TiO₂ on PHE in soil washing eluent (SWE) were evaluated under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation or dark condition, and P25 was employed as the reference. The results revealed that CX-TiO₂(0.2) had the best removal effect on PHE, with the efficiency as high as 97.8% under UV illumination within 15 h. It demonstrated that in the process of PHE removal by CX-TiO₂ whether it was under UV illumination or not, the adsorption plays a dominant role in the early stage. The kinetic behavior of PHE adsorption was fitted using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order, and Langmuir model and Freundlich models were applied to describe the PHE adsorption isotherms. The results indicating that it was a chemical adsorption process, which was influenced by the interaction between PHE and CX-TiO₂, and PHE is adsorbed on the interface of CX-TiO₂(0.2) in a single layer form, instead of agglomerating in the admicelle. A possible mechanism of removal of solubilized PHE in SWE was speculated, in which both hierarchical porous structure and appropriate micropores size of CX-TiO₂ were indispensable to the selective adsorption and degradation of PHE. Recycling performance certificated that the selective removal efficiency of PHE could still reach 82.09% after five recycles. Thus the excellent performance testified that the CX-TiO₂ have great potential in treating SWE containing solubilized PAHs.
