Understanding the toxicity risk of antibiotic emissions of aquaculture from the perspective of fluctuations concentration

Organisms are generally exposed to target contaminant with stable concentrations in traditional ecotoxicological studies. However, it is difficult to truly represent the dynamics and complexity of actual aquatic pollution for risk management. Contaminants may enter nearby aquatic systems in pulsed exposure, thus resulting in that aquatic organisms will be exposed to contaminants at fluctuating concentrations. Especially during the season of summer, due to the changes in displacement or periodic emissions of veterinary antibiotics in aquaculture, algal blooms occur frequently in surrounding waters, thus leading to eutrophication of the water. Florfenicol (FFC) is currently widely used as a veterinary antibiotic, but the aquatic ecological risks of FFC under concentration fluctuations are still unknown. Therefore, the acute exposure, chronic exposure and pulsed exposure effects of FFC on Microcystis aeruginosa were investigated to comprehensively evaluate the ecological risk of FFC and raise awareness of the pulsed exposure mode. Results indicated that the toxic effects of FFC on M. aeruginosa were dominated by exposure mode, exposure duration, exposure frequency, and exposure concentration. The maximum growth inhibition rate of the 10 μg/L FFC treatment amounted to 4.07% during chronic exposure of 18 days. However, the growth inhibition rate decreased from 55.1% to 19.31% when algae was exposure to 10 μg/L FFC during the first pulsed exposure (8 h). Therefore, when the concentration of FFC was equal under chronic and pulsed exposure, FFC exhibited greater toxicity on M. aeruginosa in short pulsed exposure than in continuous exposure. In addition, repetitive pulsed exposure strengthened the resistance of M. aeruginosa on FFC. The adaptive regulation of algae was related to the duration and frequency of exposure. Above results suggested that traditional toxicity assessments lacked consideration for fluctuating concentrations during pollutant emissions, thus underestimating the environmental risk of contaminant. This investigation aims to facilitate the standardization of pulsed exposure.

Environmental health hazards of untreated livestock wastewater: potential risks and future perspectives

Due to technological and economic limitations, waste products such as sewage and manure generated in livestock farming lack comprehensive scientific and centralized treatment. This leads to the exposure of various contaminants in livestock wastewater, posing potential risks to both the ecological environment and human health. This review evaluates the environmental and physical health risks posed by common pollutants in livestock wastewater and outlines future treatment methods to mitigate these risks. Residual wastes in livestock wastewater, including pathogenic bacteria and parasites surviving after epidemics or diseases on various farms, along with antibiotics, organic wastes, and heavy metals from farming activities, contribute to environmental damage and pose risks to human health. As the livestock industry's development increasingly impacts society's future negatively, addressing the issue of residual wastes in livestock wastewater discharge becomes imperative. Ongoing advancements in wastewater treatment systems are consistently updating and refining practices to effectively minimize waste exposure at the discharge source, mitigating risks to environmental ecology and human health. This review not only summarizes the "potential risks of livestock wastewater" but also explores "the prospects for the development of wastewater treatment technologies" based on current reports. It offers valuable insights to support the long-term and healthy development of the livestock industry and contribute to the sustainable development of the ecological environment.

Use of reclaimed urban wastewater for the production of hydroponic barley forage: water characteristics, feed quality and effects on health status and production of lactating cows

The safety of reclaimed urban wastewater (RUW) for the production of hydroponic barley forage (HBF) was evaluated in terms of effluent and forage characteristics, as well as the health and performance of lactating cows. The study was conducted on a dairy farm equipped with two hydroponic chambers producing approximately 620 kg/d of HBF as fed. For experimental purposes, HBF was produced using RUW collected from an aqueduct plant processing urban wastewater in a membrane bioreactor treatment chain. A feeding trial was carried out with HBF derived from RUW. Sixty lactating cows were randomly assigned to two balanced groups fed a standard total mixed ration (TMR) or a TMR in which 10 kg of HBF replaced 1 kg of oat hay and 0.5 kg of maize. The experimental period lasted 7 weeks, including a 2-week adaptation period, during which each cow underwent a physical examination, BCS scoring, blood sampling for a complete blood count and biochemical panel, recording of body weight and milk yield and quality, including fatty acid composition and heavy metal content. Ruminal pH was continuously monitored by reticulorumen boluses, and nutrient digestibility and N balance were determined at week 7. RUW showed an acceptable microbial load and an overall good quality as irrigation water, even though the supply of N and P did not influence the yield and quality of HBF. The characteristics of HBF reflected the quality of RUW supplied to the hydroponic chambers and no anomalous components (i.e., high ion concentration) were found. Feeding RW-derived HBF to lactating cows had no major positive or negative effects on animal health and production, including milk quality, ruminal pH, in vivo digestibility, and N balance. The use of RUW under the conditions tested appears to be safe for the health status of lactating cows and the quality of the milk obtained. Overall, the results do not reveal any major limitations for the use of tertiary wastewater as irrigation water for the hydroponic production of forage barley, so that a wider use of wastewater in hydroponic systems seems realistic.

Effect of Wastewater Treatment on Bacterial Community, Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and Endoparasites

Wastewater and wastewater treatment plants serve as urban reservoirs of pathogenic microorganisms. Wastewaters frequently contain bacteria, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and developmental stages of parasites with significant zoonotic potential. Five wastewater treatment plants in the central part of Slovakia were investigated to determine the effect of treatment on bacterial community, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and the occurrence of helminth eggs. Although all monitored chemical factors (chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, N-NH4, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) in the effluent were in line with the legislative standards for discharge into public waterways, the results of minimal inhibitory concentrations show that reclaimed water harbors E. coli resistant to several commonly used antibiotics (ampicillin, piperacillin, and tazobactam, combine ampicillin and sulbactam, cefotaxime, tetracycline). The presence of endoparasite developmental stages in wastewater and sludge (Ascaris spp., Hymenolepis nana, eggs from the Ancylostomatidae family, Giardia duodenalis) indicates potential health risks for humans and workers at these sites. Treatment such as composting before applying sludge to land is necessary to reduce human pathogens.

Wastewater-based microalgal biorefineries for the production of astaxanthin and co-products: Current status, challenges and future perspectives

The freshwater microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis and Chlorella zofingiensis are attractive biorefinery feedstocks in view of their ability to simultaneously synthesize astaxanthin and other valuable metabolites. Nonetheless, there are concerns regarding the sustainability of such biorefineries due to the high freshwater footprint of microalgae cultivation. The integration of wastewater as an alternative growth media is a promising approach to reduce freshwater demand. Wastewater-based cultivation enables the recovery of essential nutrients required for microalgae growth and consequently results in phycoremediation of wastewater, thus promoting the concept of a circular economy and further enhancing the sustainability of the process. In this review, recent developments in wastewater-integrated cultivation of H. pluvialis and C. zofingiensis for astaxanthin production are discussed. Furthermore, prospective strategies for overcoming the inherent challenges of wastewater-based cultivation are reviewed. Moreover, the biorefinery potential of wastewater-grown H. pluvialis and C. zofingiensis is delineated and future perspectives of wastewater-based biorefineries are outlined.

What factors affect the selection of industrial wastewater treatment configuration?

Industrial wastewater treatment is gaining significance in literature due to stricter environmental policies and increased environmental awareness. The selection of the wastewater configuration encompasses both the treatment as well as several decisions around wastewater collection and disposal pertaining industrial decision-making sphere. However, so far in the wastewater literature, research has mostly discussed either technical features of wastewater technologies, or wastewater policy issues at broader level, without focusing on the industrial decision-making issues and driving factors leading to the selection of a specific configuration. Starting from a literature review, the present study provides an innovative framework of the possible options for wastewater system configuration, as well as major adoption factors by industrial decision-makers. The factors have been classified according to 7 categories, namely: influent-related, technological, economic/financial, internal socio-cultural, external socio-cultural, regulation, site characteristics. The framework, validated with acknowledgeable experts, policy makers and firms, has been preliminarily applied to Italian and Australian food firms. Our investigation reveals that the framework was able to include all relevant problems faced by industries in the selection of a treatment system configuration; besides, the relative importance of factors has been assessed: legal requirements emerge as the most critical factors, followed by volume and discharge fee, the latter particularly interesting for policy makers purposes, since it may guide the decision-making process. Further, the wastewater volume seems to play a key role in our exploratory investigation, with smaller firms preferring a complete off-site treatment to reduce the complexity, whilst larger firms preferring instead more partial or complete on-site treatment configurations for compliance costs reduction. In conclusion, we have provided policy and managerial implications stemming from the study as well as sketched interesting future research avenues.

Human health damages related to air pollution in China

In recent years, air pollution in China has posed serious threats to human health. In this study, we investigate the relationship between air pollution and residents' health by nesting the household registration data of the China Migrant Dynamic Survey in 2014 with city characteristic data and pollution data. The results indicated that an increase in the concentration of air pollution significantly reduced residents' health levels. After using the instrumental variable (IV)-Oprobit model to solve endogenous problem, we have found that the negative impact of air pollution on residents' health remained significant. Moreover, the lag term of environmental indexes was introduced and found that air pollution significantly increased health risk. The results also demonstrated that the impact of air pollution on human health was heterogeneous. Men and urban residents were more sensitive to air pollution and more adversely affected. In addition to air pollution, the study found that, among the influencing factors at the individual level, males' health was better than females' health, and education positively impacted on residents' health. The health effects were consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Grossman model. The financial expenditure and medical input were negatively correlated with residents' health levels. Based on the results, we suggest the Chinese government should implement rigorous air pollution laws and regulations.
