Chemical properties of dissolved organic matter derived from sugarcane rind and the impacts on copper adsorption onto red soil

Combined Remediation Effects of Sewage Sludge and Phosphate Fertilizer on Pb-Polluted Soil from a Pb-Acid Battery Plant

Pb soil pollution poses a serious health risk to both the environment and humans. Immobilization is the most common strategy for remediation of heavy metal polluted soil. In this study, municipal sewage sludge was used as an amendment for rehabilitation of Pb-contaminated soils, for agricultural use, near a lead-acid battery factory. The passivation effect was further improved by the addition of phosphate fertilizer. It was found that the leachable Pb content in soils was decreased from 49.6 mg kg-1 to 16.1-36.6 mg kg-1 after remediation of sludge for 45 d at applied dosage of municipal sewage sludge of 4-16 wt%, and further decreased to 14.3-34.3 mg kg-1 upon extension of the remediation period to 180 d. The addition of phosphate fertilizer greatly enhanced the Pb immobilization, with leachable Pb content decreased to 2.0-23.6  mg kg-1 with increasing dosage of phosphate fertilizer in range of 0.8-16 wt% after 180 d remediation. Plant assays showed that the bioavailability of Pb was significantly reduced by the soil remediation, with the content of absorbed Pb in mung bean roots decreased by as much as 87.0%. The decrease in mobility and biotoxicity of the soil Pb is mainly attributed to the speciation transformation of carbonate, Fe-Mn oxides and organic matter bound Pb to residue Pb under the synergism of reduction effect of sludge and acid dissolution and precipitation effect of phosphate fertilizer. This study suggests a new method for remediation of Pb-contaminated soil and utilization of municipal sewage sludge resources.

Effects of Sugarcane Leaf Return and Fertilizer Reduction on Maize Growth, Yield and Soil Properties in Red Soil

In order to make better use of the vast sugarcane leaf straw resources and reduce the overuse of chemical fertilizers in the subtropical red soil region of Guangxi, this study aimed to determine the effects of sugarcane leaf return (SLR) and fertilizer reduction (FR) on maize growth, yield component and yield, and soil properties. A pot experiment with three SLR amounts (full SLR (FS), 120 g/pot; half SLR (HS), 60 g/pot; and no SLR (NS) with three FR levels including full fertilizer (FF), 4.50 g N/pot, 3.00 g P₂O₅/pot, and 4.50 g K₂O/pot; half fertilizer (HF), 2.25 g N/pot, 1.50 g P₂O₅/pot, and 2.25 g K₂O/pot; and no fertilizer (NF)), without nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium added, was conducted to assess the effects of different SLR amounts and chemical FR levels on maize growth, yield, and soil properties. Compared with no sugarcane leaf return and the no-fertilizer treatment (CK), SLR and FR could increase maize plant height, stalk diameter, number of fully developed maize plant leaves, total leaf area and chlorophyll content, soil alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), soil organic matter (SOM), and electrical conductivity (EC). The maize yield component factors of FS and HS were higher in NF treatment than those in NS treatment. The relative increase rate of treatments retained FF/NF and HF/NF under FS or HS condition on 1000 kernel weight, ear diameter, plant air-dried weight, ear height, and yield than that under NS condition. FSHF had not only the largest plant air-dried weight but also the highest maize yield (3225.08 kg/hm²) among nine treatment combinations. The effects of SLR on maize growth and yield and soil properties were lower than those of FR. SLR and FR combined treatment did not affect maize growth but affected maize yield significantly. Soil properties improved more with SLR + FR treatment than with SLR or FR application alone. The plant height, stalk diameter, number of fully developed maize plant leaves, and total leaf area, as well as AN, AP, AK, SOM, and EC levels in soil, were enhanced by SLR and FR incorporation. The experimental results indicated that applying reasonable FR combined with SLR increased AN, AP, AK, SOM, and EC, which improved maize growth and yield and enhanced soil properties in red soil. Hence, FSHF might be a suitable combination of SLR and FR.

A quick and simple spectrophotometric method to determine total carbon concentrations in root exudate samples of grass species

PURPOSE

Root exudates are key components driving belowground interaction between plant, microbes and soil. High-end analytical approaches provide advanced insights into exudate metabolite diversity, however, the amount of total carbon (C) released by roots should always be determined as the most basic parameter when characterizing root exudation as it (i) provides quantitative information of C exuded into the surrounding soil and (ii) allows to relate the abundance of individual exudate compounds to total C released. Here we propose a simple and quick, spectrophotometry-based method to quantify total dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in exudation samples that is based on measuring the absorption of a pre-filtered but otherwise untreated exudate sample at 260 nm (DOC₂₆₀).

METHOD

Exudate samples collected from different grass genotypes (Zea mays, Oryza sativa, Hordeum vulgare) grown in various experimental settings (soil, hydroponic) were analysed with the DOC₂₆₀ assay and results were compared with C concentrations obtained by liquid TOC-analyser.

CONCLUSION

We demonstrated that the DOC₂₆₀ method allowed for quick and inexpensive measurements of total dissolved organic carbon concentrations in exudate samples from grass species grown under nutrient sufficient as well as under P deficient conditions. Interestingly, DOC₂₆₀ failed to predict DOC concentrations in exudate samples from plants grown under Zn and Fe deficiency suggesting a strong shift in metabolite composition under micronutrient deficiency. Even though the applicability of the DOC₂₆₀ method remains to be tested on exudate samples originating from dicots and plants exposed to other environmental stresses (e.g. pathogen attack, heavy metal stress, etc), it will help to increase our understanding of root exudation and related rhizosphere processes in the future.

Understanding the microstructure, mineralogical and adsorption characteristics of guar gum blended soil as a liner material

Guar gum blended soil (GGBS) offers potentially advantageous engineering characteristics of hydraulic conductivity and strength for a soil to be used as a liner material. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope were used to examine the mineral composition, functional groups and morphological changes in the unblended soil (UBS) and GGBS. These characterization approaches are used to understand adsorption-associated mechanisms of Pb(II) removal. Batch adsorption tests were performed to evaluate the adsorption capacity of UBS and the GGBS with various proportions (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%) of guar gum (GG) towards the removal of Pb(II) ions. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted by varying the pH, dosage of adsorbent, concentration of metal ions and contact time. The experimental results showed that the optimum removal of Pb(II) ions was high at a pH of 3.0 for all blends, and adsorption tests beyond 3.0 pH demonstrated a decline in adsorption performance. The maximum Pb(II) removal efficiency of 95% was obtained using the 2.0% GGBS. The isotherm model assessment for adsorption experimental data of Pb(II) showed the best fit for the Langmuir model on using GG. The present research demonstrated that the guar gum-treated blends exhibited potential Pb(II) ion adsorption properties and therefore can be used as sustainable liner material in sanitary landfills.

A meta-analysis of heavy metal bioavailability response to biochar aging: Importance of soil and biochar properties

Biochar has been widely applied to remediate the heavy metal-polluted soils, whereas biochar aging can induce the changes of the biochar physic-chemical properties. Afterwards, the bioavailability of heavy metals (BHM) will vary in soils which likely increase the unstable fractions of heavy metals and the following environmental risks. To explore the biochar aging effects on the BHM changes in responses to the variation of experimental conditions and biochar properties, a meta-analysis for the literatures published before May 2020 was conducted. A sum of 257 independent observations from 22 published papers was obtained. The results from the analysis of boosted regression tree showed that the soil pH was the most important factor influencing the BHM changes in biochar amended soil, followed by soil texture, aging time and biochar pyrolysis temperature. The results of this review showed that the BHM was decreased by 16.9%, 28.7% and 6.4% in weakly acid soil (pH 6.00-6.99), coarse- and medium-textured soils, respectively, but increased by 149% and 121% in the alkaline (pH > 8.00) and fine-textured soils. The BHM declined in the soils amended with biochar pyrolyzed at relative high temperature (> 500 °C), and increased during aging in soils amended with biochar pyrolyzed at relatively low temperature (401-500 °C). In terms of diverse immobilized heavy metals, only bioavailable Zn in soil decreased after aging. However, there was no significant changes in Cd, Cu and Pb's bioavalability. Besides, the BHM was decreased by 18.6% within the short-term (less than one year) biochar aging, while showed inverse trend during the longer aging processes. Besides, the application of lignin-enriched biochar may counteract the positive effects of the biochar aging on BHM. Our works may promote the interpretation of the interference factors on the BHM changes and filled the research gaps on biochar aging process in soils.

Effect of dissolved organic matter on adsorption of sediments to Oxytetracycline: An insight from zeta potential and DLVO theory

To reveal the adsorption mechanism of sediment to antibiotics with the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM), batch experiments were carried out by oxytetracycline (OTC) on sediments with decayed plants (PDOM) and composted chicken manure (MDOM), and the zeta potential in the system before and after adsorption was measured. Results showed that the PDOM promoted the adsorption process, while the MDOM inhibited the adsorption. Adding PDOM, the change of zeta potential (Δζ) increased by 40.08% for first terrace sediments (FT) and 63.98% for riverbed sediments (RB), respectively; meanwhile, MDOM decreased by 20.04% for FT and 28.39% for RB, respectively. The results of kinetic fitting models of replacing the adsorption amount with Δζ were consistent with the initial. It indicated that there was a positive correlation between the adsorption amount and Δζ, and the zeta potential can be used to quickly judge the degree of adsorption process. The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory describes the interactions of sediment particles. In terms of adsorption amount, zeta potential (absolute value) and total interaction energy all followed the order: RB > FT, RB-PDOM > FT-PDOM, and RB-MDOM > FT-MDOM. The more negative the zeta potential is, the better the dispersion of the particles is. Stronger repulsion is more conducive to adsorbing positively charged OTC. The site energy distribution theory further explained that the distribution of adsorption site in the various states of sediments increased while adding the PDOM and decreased while adding the MDOM.

Structural characteristics, analytical techniques and interactions with organic contaminants of dissolved organic matter derived from crop straw: a critical review

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents one of the most mobile and reactive organic compounds in an ecosystem and plays an important role in the fate and transport of soil organic pollutants, nutrient cycling and more importantly global climate change. Advances in environment geochemistry in the past two decades have improved our knowledge about the genesis, composition, and structure of DOM, and its effect on the environment. Application of analytical technology, for example UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM) have resulted in these advances. At present, crop straw, as a part of energy development strategy, is mainly used for soil amendment, fodder, fertilizer and industrial materials. Moreover, the fermentation and decomposition of straw should be also promoted for ecological agriculture. However, few studies have focused on the structural properties of DOM derived from crop straw in farmland soil. In this article, DOM derived from crop straw, which is abbreviated to "CDOM", presents active physicochemical properties that can affect the migration and bioavailability of organic contaminants (OCs) in terrestrial ecosystems. The objectives of this review paper are: (i) to discuss the structural characteristics, analytical techniques and interactions between CDOM and OCs in farmland soil; (ii) to present a critical analysis of the impact of CDOM on the physicochemical transformation and transport of OCs in farmland soils; (iii) to provide the perspectives in future research. Therefore, the findings obtained from this study can be utilized to evaluate the relations of interactions between CDOM and OCs in agricultural soils, in order to support some suggestions for future development in agricultural waste recycling, buffering of organic pollution, and the effect on the global carbon cycle.
