Persistence of picloram in soil with different vegetation managements

Exposure to three herbicide mixtures influenced maize root-associated microbial community structure, function and the network complexity

Herbicide mixtures are a new and effective agricultural strategy for managing suppress weed resistance and have been widely used in controlling weeding growth in maize fields. However, the potential ecotoxicological impact of these mixtures on the microbial community structure and function within various root-associated niches, remains inadequately understood. Here, the effects of nicosulfuron, mesotrione and atrazine on soil enzyme activity and microbial community structure and function were investigated when applied alone and in combination. The findings indicated that herbicide mixtures exhibit a prolonged half-life compared to single herbicides. Ecological niches are the major factor influencing the structure and functions of the microbial community, with the rhizosphere exhibiting a more intensive response to herbicide stress. Herbicides significantly inhibited the activities of soil functional enzymes, including dehydrogenase, urease and sucrose in the short-term. Single herbicide did not drastically influence the alpha or beta diversity of the soil bacterial community, but herbicide mixtures significantly increased the richness of the fungal community. Meanwhile, the key functional microbial populations, such as Pseudomonas and Enterobacteriaceae, were significantly altered by herbicide stress. Both individual and combined use of the three herbicides reduced the complexity and stability of the bacterial network but increased the interspecific cooperations of fungal community in the rhizosphere. Moreover, by quantification of residual herbicide concentrations in the soil, we showed that the degradation period of the herbicide mixture was longer than that of single herbicides. Herbicide mixtures increased the contents of NO3--N and NH4+-N in the soil in the short-term. Overall, our study provided a comprehensive insight into the response of maize root-associated microbial communities to herbicide mixtures and facilitated the assessment of the ecological risks posed by herbicide mixtures to the agricultural environment from an agricultural sustainability perspective.

Chemically engineered unzipped multiwalled carbon nanotube and rGO nanohybrid for ultrasensitive picloram detection in rice water and soil samples

Picloram (4-Amino-3,5,6-trichloro pyridine-2-carboxylic acid) is a chlorinated herbicide that has been discovered to be tenacious and relatively durable in both soil and water. It is known to have adverse and unpleasant effects on humans causing several health complications. Therefore, the determination of picloram is profoundly effective because of its bio-accumulative and persistent nature. Because of this, a sensitive, rapid, and robust detection system is essential to detect traces of this molecule. In this study, we have constructed a novel nanohybrid system comprising of an UZMWCNT and rGO decorated on AuNPs modified glassy carbon electrode (UZMWCNT + rGO/AuNPs/GCE). The synthesized nanomaterials and the developed system were characterized using techniques such as SEM, XRD, SWV, LSV, EIS, and chronoamperometry. The engineered sensor surface showed a broad linear range of 5 × 10^-2 nM to 6 × 10⁵ nM , a low limit of detection (LOD) of 2.31 ± 0.02 (RSD < 4.1%) pM and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 7.63 ± 0.03 pM. The response time was recorded to be 0.2 s, and the efficacy of the proposed sensor system was studied using rice water and soil samples collected from the agricultural field post filtration. The calculated recovery % for picloram in rice water was found to be 88.58%-96.70% (RSD < 3.5%, n = 3) and for soil it was found to be 89.57%-93.24% (RSD < 3.5%, n = 3). In addition, the SWV responses of both the real samples have been performed and a linear plot have been obtained with a correlation coefficient of 0.97 and 0.96 for rice and soil samples, respectively. The interference studies due to the coexisting molecules that may be present in the samples have been found to be negligible. Also, the designed sensor has been evaluated for stability and found to be highly reproducible and stable towards picloram detection.

Interaction between herbicides applied in mixtures alters the conception of its environmental impact

Herbicide mixtures have often been used to control weeds in crops worldwide, but the behavior of these mixtures in the environment is still poorly understood. Laboratory and greenhouse tests have been conducted to study the interaction of the herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl which have been applied alone and in binary and ternary mixtures in the processes of sorption, desorption, half-life, and leaching in the soil. A new index of the risk of leaching of these herbicides has also been proposed. The sorption and desorption study has been carried out by the batch equilibrium method. The dissipation of the herbicides has been evaluated for 180 days to determine the half-life (t_1/2). The leaching tests have been carried out on soil columns. The herbicides isolated and in mixtures have been quantified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to the mass spectrometer. Diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl in binary and ternary mixtures have less sorption capacity and greater desorption when compared to these isolated herbicides. Dissipation of diuron alone is slower, with a half-life (t_1/2) = 101 days compared to mixtures (t_1/2 between 44 and 66 days). For hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl, the dissipation rate is lower in mixtures (t_1/2 over 26 and 16 days), with a more pronounced effect in mixtures with the presence of diuron (t_1/2 = 47 and 56 and 17 and 22 days). The binary and ternary mixtures of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl promoted more significant transport in depth (with the three herbicides quantified to depth P4, P7, and P7, respectively) compared to the application of these isolated herbicides (quantified to depth P2, P4, and P5). Considering the herbicides' desorption and solubility, the new index proposed to estimate the leaching potential allowed a more rigorous assessment concerning the risk of leaching these pesticides, with hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl presenting a higher risk of contamination of groundwater.

Potential of Egeria densa and Pistia stratiotes for the phytoremediation of water contaminated with saflufenacil

Saflufenacil is an herbicide that is leachable in soil and has the potential to contaminate groundwater, besides having moderate toxicity to aquatic organisms. Some macrophyte species may interfere with the availability of herbicides in water, increasing dissipation in this environment. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the absorption and dissipation of ¹⁴C-saflufenacil in water by Egeria densa and Pistia stratiotes. Dissipation was performed with ¹⁴C-saflufenacil applied directly in water and quantified by liquid scintillation spectrometry (LSS). The evaluation times were 0, 3, 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after application (HAA) for E. densa and 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 84 and 108 HAA for P. stratiotes. Absorption was analyzed through plant combustion in a biological oxidizer. The presence of the macrophytes increased the dissipation of ¹⁴C-saflufenacil in water. The half-life time (DT₅₀) of the herbicide decreased by 82.6% in the presence of E. densa at 96 HAA. For P. stratiotes, the reduction in DT₅₀ was 94.8% at 108 HAA. The absorption of ¹⁴C-saflufenacil was low for both macrophytes during the evaluated time. However, the macrophytes E. densa and P. stratiotes showed potential for the phytoremediation of water contaminated with saflufenacil.

Metagenomic analysis reveals mechanisms of atrazine biodegradation promoted by tree species

Metagenomics has provided the discovery of genes and metabolic pathways involved in the degradation of xenobiotics. Some microorganisms can metabolize these compounds, potentiating phytoremediation in association with plant. This study aimed to study the metagenome and the occurrence of atrazine degradation genes in rhizospheric soils of the phytoremediation species Inga striata and Caesalphinea ferrea. The genera of microorganisms predominant in the rhizospheric soils of I. striata and C. ferrea were Mycobacterium, Conexibacter, Bradyrhizobium, Solirubrobacter, Rhodoplanes, Streptomyces, Geothrix, Gaiella, Nitrospira, and Haliangium. The atzD, atzE, and atzF genes were detected in the rhizospheric soils of I. striata and atzE and atzF in the rhizospheric soils of C. ferrea. The rhizodegradation by both tree species accelerates the degradation of atrazine residues, eliminating toxic effects on plants highly sensitive to this herbicide. This is the first report for the species Agrobacterium rhizogenes and Candidatus Muproteobacteria bacterium and Micromonospora genera as atrazine degraders.

Adsorption mechanisms of atrazine isolated and mixed with glyphosate formulations in soil

In Brazil, the atrazine has been applied frequently to join with glyphosate to control resistant biotypes and weed tolerant species to glyphosate. However, there are no studies about atrazine's behavior in soil when applied in admixture with glyphosate. Knowledge of atrazine's sorption and desorption mixed with glyphosate is necessary because the lower sorption and higher desorption may increase the leaching and runoff of pesticides, reaching groundwaters and rivers. Thereby, the objective of this study was to evaluate the adsorption mechanisms of atrazine when isolated and mixed with glyphosate formulations in a Red-Yellow Latosol. The maximum adsorbed amount of atrazine in equilibrium (qe) was not altered due to glyphosate formulations. The time to reach equilibrium was shortest when atrazine was mixed with the Roundup Ready® (te = 4.3 hours) due to the higher adsorption velocity (k2 = 2.3 mg min-1) in the soil. The highest sorption of atrazine occurred when mixed with the Roundup WG®, with the Freundlich sorption coefficient (Kf) equal to 2.51 and 2.43 for both formulation concentrations. However, other glyphosate formulations did not affect the sorption of atrazine. The desorption of atrazine was high for all treatments, with values close to 80% of the initial adsorbed amount, without differences among isolated and mixed treatments. The change in the velocity and capacity of sorption for the atrazine mixed with some glyphosate formulations indicates that further studies should be conducted to identify the mechanisms involved in this process.

Photocatalytic Degradation of a Systemic Herbicide: Picloram from Aqueous Solution Using Titanium Oxide (TiO2) under Sunlight

The photocatalytic degradation of picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridincarboxylic acid), which is one of popular acidic herbicide, was investigated with the existence of titanium oxide (TiO2) under sunlight. The total photocatalytic degradation of 20 ppm of picloram was occurred within 30 min irradiation with TiO2, while a negligible degradation was found without TiO2 under sunlight. The influence of various parameters, like TiO2 dosage, solution initial pH, intensity of light, reaction temperature and irradiation time, was found during the photocatalytic degradation of picloram. The mineralization of picloram was proved by the deterioration of total organic carbon (TOC) of the photocatalytic process. The pseudo–first order kinetics of photocatalytic degradation was obtained according to the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, and the reaction rate constant was 17.6 × 10−2 min−1. Chloride ion, ammonium ion, nitrate ion and CO2 were erected as the final products after completing the photocatalytic degradation of picloram. The intermediate products could not be determined by the GC–MS during the degradation of picloram. Therefore, the degradation mechanism of the picloram was proposed based on the frontier electron density and the point charge at each atom of the picloram molecule. The photocatalytic degradation method, using sunlight, may develop into as a pragmatic technique to purify picloram contaminated wastewater.

Phytoextraction of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl from the soil by green manure species

The herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl present a potential risk of environmental contamination and are widely used for weed control in sugarcane cultivation. Our objectives were to measure the tolerance of Canavalia ensiformes (L.) DC., Stilizobium aterrimum L., Raphanus sativus L., Crotalaria spectabilis Röth, Lupinus albus L., and Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. To the herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl to assess the capacity of these species to extract and accumulate the herbicides in their tissues. Before sowing the green manure species, the soils were individually contaminated with the three ¹⁴C-radiolabeled herbicides. ¹⁴C-diuron and ¹⁴C-sulfometuron-methyl showed higher values remaining in the soil (>90%) for all species of green manure compared to hexazinone (<80%). The green manure species analyzed showed greater potential to remedy soils contaminated with hexazinone than the other herbicides. C. ensiformes showed high phytoextraction of hexazinone when compared to the other species, removing 11.2% of the pollutant from the soil, followed by L. albus (8.6%), S. aterrimum (7.3%), R. sativus (4.8%), C. spectabilis (2.5%), and P. glaucum (1.1%). The results indicate that the phytoextraction of diuron, hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl is dependent on the species of green manure and can be an important tool for the decontamination of areas polluted by these herbicides.

Does Canavalia ensiformis inoculation with Bradyrhizobium sp. enhance phytoremediation of sulfentrazone-contaminated soil?

Symbiosis among herbicide-metabolising microorganisms and phytoremediation plants may be an efficient alternative to remediate sulfentrazone-contaminated soils. This work evaluated the bioremediation of sulfentrazone-contaminated soils by symbiosis between bacteria (Bradyrhizobium sp.) and jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.). The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse between March and May of 2018, in the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES). Four doses of sulfentrazone (0, 400, 800, and 1200 g ha^-1 a. i.) were tested with and without inoculation with Bradyrhizobium sp. BR 2003 (SEMIA 6156) After 80 days of cultivation, plants were cut and soil was collected for determination of the herbicide residual levels and millet bioassay. The sulfentrazone concentration was significantly reduced by plant inoculation with Bradyrhizobium sp.: on average, concentrations were 18.97%, 23.82%, and 22.10% lower than in the absence of inoculation at doses of 400, 800, and 1200 g ha^-1, respectively. Symbiosis promoted a reduction of up to 65% in residual soil herbicides. Under the 1200 g ha^-1 dose, inoculation promoted greater plant height than in the uninoculated plant. Regardless of the dose of sulfentrazone, the dry root mass was higher in the inoculated plants. The microbiological indicators showed satisfactory results mainly for the dose of 400 g ha^-1. The results of this study highlight the potential of positive interactions between symbiotic microorganisms and leguminous species, aiming toward the phytoremediation of sulfentrazone herbicide.

Use of neural networks to estimate the sorption and desorption coefficients of herbicides: A case study of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl in Brazil

The use of herbicides in Brazil has been carried out based on the manufacturer's recommendation, often disregarding the high variability of soil attributes. The use of statistical methods to predict the herbicide retention processes in the soil can contribute to the improvement of weed control efficiency associated with the lower risk of environmental contamination. This research evaluated the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to predict soil sorption and desorption, as well as the environmental contamination potential of diuron, hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides in Brazilian soils. The sorption and desorption coefficients of the three herbicides were determined in laboratory tests for 15 soils from different Brazilian states. To predict the sorption and desorption of diuron, hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl were used a multilayer perceptron ANNs (MLP). The inputs were the characteristics of the herbicides and the physical and chemical attributes of the soils, and the outputs of were the sorption and desorption coefficients (Kfs and Kfd). The risk of leaching of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides were evaluated considering the sorption values observed and those estimated by the models. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models were efficient for the prediction of sorption and desorption of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides. The physicochemical properties of the herbicides were more important for the modeling of multilayer perceptron ANNs than the soil attributes. The herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl have a high potential risk for contamination of groundwater in different Brazilian states.

Multivariate analysis reveals significant diuron-related changes in the soil composition of different Brazilian regions

Sorption and desorption determine the amount of an herbicide in soil solution. Therefore, knowledge of the sorption and desorption coefficients in different soils is an essential factor to estimate the potential for environmental contamination by herbicides. We evaluated the feasibility of multivariate and linear discriminant analyses to predict the sorption and desorption capacity of a soil for diuron, one of the most used herbicides on sugarcane plantations. The adsorptive capacity in twenty-seven Brazilian soil samples was estimated using the sorption constant (Kfs) and desorption constant (Kfd) obtained by the Freundlich isotherms. The regression model was created from the sorbed and nonsorbed concentrations of diuron in soils. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography was applied to quantify the diuron concentrations. The multivariate analysis separated the soils into four groups considering the similarity of the following attributes: pH, organic matter, clay, and base saturation. The groups showed a similar pattern of sorption and desorption for diuron: Lom-Lclay: low sorption (5.9 ± 1.2) and high desorption (10.9 ± 0.6); Lclay: low sorption (7.5 ± 1.1) and high desorption (11.4 ± 1.3); Hom-Hclay: high sorption (11.2 ± 1.2) and low desorption (13.8 ± 1.2); HpH-Hclay: high sorption (10.1 ± 1.1) and medium desorption (11.5 ± 1.4). Linear discriminant analysis of these soil attributes was used to classify other soils described in the literature with adsorption capacity. This analysis was able to identify soils with high and low sorption using the pH, organic matter, clay, and base saturation, demonstrating the enormous potential of the technique to group soils with different contamination risks for subterranean waters. Sugarcane crops in northeastern Brazil showed a higher pollution risk through the leaching of diuron. Multivariate analysis revealed significant diuron-related changes in the soil composition of different Brazilian regions; therefore, this statistical analysis can be used to improve understanding of herbicide behavior in soils.
