A review on recent advancements in extraction, removal and recovery of phenols from phenolic wastewater: Challenges and future outlook

Water pollution is the major problem seen in today's scenario and even pollutants at low concentration harms our environment. In industrial sector usage of phenol is seen even at low concentrations. The interaction of phenol in the environment provides adverse effects to living beings. This review focuses on the toxicity of phenol and its impact towards environment and human health. The treatment techniques such as distillation, extraction, wet air oxidation, membrane process, electrochemical oxidation, biological treatment and finally adsorption techniques were discussed. Among many treatment techniques so far utilized in the treatment of phenol, adsorption was considered as one of the best technique due to its advantages such as reusability, ease in operation, large availability etc., This review also highlights the adsorption technique for the cleaner removal of phenol from aqueous solution with novel as well as low-cost adsorbents in the removal of phenolic compounds. This review also discusses about the drawbacks and issues related with adsorption of phenolic compounds.

Dual metabolic pathways co-determine the efficient aerobic biodegradation of phenol in Cupriavidus nantongensis X1

Phenol, as an important chemical raw material, often exists in wastewater from chemical plants and pollutes soil and groundwater. Aerobic biodegradation is a promising method for remediation of phenolic wastewater. In this study, degradation characteristics and mechanisms of phenol in Cupriavidus nantongensis X1 were explored. Strain X1 could completely degrade 1.5 mM phenol within 32 h and use it as the sole carbon source for growth. The optimal degradation temperature and pH for phenol by strain X1 were 30 °C and 7.0. The detection of 3-oxoadipate and 4-hydroxy-2-oxopentanoate indicated that dual metabolic pathways coexist in strain X1 for phenol degradation, ortho- and meta-pathway. Genome and transcriptome sequencing revealed the whole gene clusters for phenol biomineralization, in which C12O and C23O were key enzymes in two metabolic pathways. The ribosome proteins were also involved in the regulation of phenol degradation. Meanwhile, the degradation activities of enzyme C23O was 188-fold higher than that of C12O in vitro, which indicated that the meta-pathway was more efficient than ortho-pathway for catechol degradation in strain X1. This study provides an efficient strain resource for phenol degradation, and the discovery of dual metabolic pathways provides new insight into the aerobic biological metabolism and bioremediation of phenol.

Biodegradation modeling of phenol using Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens as plant-growth-promoting bacteria

Phenol is a major worry pollutant resulting from industrialized manufacturing and chemical reactions. The growth kinetics and biodegradation of phenol were initially investigated using C. flaccumfaciens, a recently identified plant growth stimulating bacterium. Based on the Haldane inhibition model, Haldane's growth kinetics inhibition coefficient (Ki), half-saturation coefficient (Ks), and the maximum specific growth rate (max) for phenol-dependent growth kinetics were estimated to be 329 (mg/L), 9.14 (mg/L), and 1.05 (h-1), respectively. With a sum of squared error (SSR) of 1.36 × 10-3, the Haldane equation is well adapted to empirical data. The improved Gombertz model also accurately predicts phenol biodegradation trends. The rate of phenol biodegradation and the lag time both increased as the initial phenol concentrations were increased. C. flaccumfaciens growth and phenol biodegradation were best achieved at a pH of 7.0 at a temperature of 28 °C incubation. A phenol biodegradation mechanism by C. flaccumfaciens has been proposed. In conclusion, this study revealed the ability of C. flaccumfaciens to promote plant growth and biodegrade phenol simultaneously. This could aid in rhizoremediation and crop yield preservation in phenol-stressed conditions.

Insight into bacterial community profiles of oil shale and sandstone in ordos basin by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods

To promote the exploitation of unconventional oil resources by indigenous microorganisms, the bacterial community profiles of oil shale and sandstone in Ordos Basin were investigated using Illumina Miseq sequencing combined with the culture-based method, which was performed and reported in this literature for the first time. A total of 601 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were obtained from collected samples, the predominant phylum present in all samples was Proteobacteria (76.96%-93.07%). Discriminatory bacterial community profiles existed in those samples by culture-dependent and culture-independent methods, with variations not only in diversity indices but also in the abundance of bacteria at different genus levels. The dominant genera in cultured sandstone sample (SCB), uncultured sandstone sample (SUB), cultured shale sample (YCB), uncultured shale sample (YUB) were Enhydrobacter (71.62%), Acidovorax (42.44%), Pseudomonas (40.13%), Variovorax (70.02%), respectively. Both sample sources and culturing methods were the principal factors affecting the variation, while the communities' structures were favored primarily by culture-dependent or culture-independent approaches. The high abundance of hydrocarbon degradation-related genes was exhibited in YCB, which reveals a great potential for utilization of the culture-dependent method in shale oil exploitation. This study provided guidance for the exploitation of shale oil and sandstone oil by artificial utilization of indigenous bacteria.

The microbial RNA metagenome of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) from Germany

Aedes albopictus is a highly invasive mosquito species that has become widespread across the globe. In addition, it is an efficient vector of numerous pathogens of medical and veterinary importance, including dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses. Among others, the vector potential of mosquitoes is influenced by their microbiome. However, this influence is very dynamic and can vary between individuals and life stages. To obtain a rough overview on the microbiome of Ae. albopictus populations in Germany, pooled female and pooled male individuals from seven German locations were investigated by total RNA sequencing. The mosquito specimens had been collected as larvae in the field and processed immediately after adult emergence, i.e. without females having fed on blood. RNA fragments with high degrees of identity to a large number of viruses and microorganisms were identified, including, for example, Wolbachia pipientis and Acinetobacter baumannii, with differences between male and female mosquitoes. Knowledge about the natural occurrence of microorganisms in mosquitoes may be translated into new approaches to vector control, for example W. pipientis can be exploited to manipulate mosquito reproduction and vector competence. The study results show how diverse the microbiome of Ae. albopictus can be, and the more so needs to be adequately analysed and interpreted.

Current technologies and future perspectives for the treatment of complex petroleum refinery wastewater: A review

Petroleum refinery wastewater (PRW) is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, sulphides, ammonia, oils, suspended and dissolved solids, and heavy metals. As these pollutants are toxic and recalcitrant, it is essential to address the above issue with efficient, economical, and eco-friendly technologies. In this review, initially, an overview of the characteristics of wastewater discharged from different petroleum refinery units is discussed. Further, various pre-treatment and post-treatment strategies for complex PRW are introduced. A segregated approach has been proposed to treat the crude desalting, sour, spent caustic, and oily wastewater of petroleum refineries. The combined systems (e.g., ozonation + moving bed biofilm reactor and photocatalysis + packed bed biofilm reactor) for the treatment of low biodegradability index wastewater (BOD₅/COD < 0.2) were discussed to construct a perspective map and implement the proposed system efficiently. The economic, toxicity, and biodegradability aspects are also introduced, along with research gaps and future scope.

Soil-derived bacteria endow Camellia weevil with more ability to resist plant chemical defense

BACKGROUND

Herbivorous insects acquire their gut microbiota from diverse sources, and these microorganisms play significant roles in insect hosts' tolerance to plant secondary defensive compounds. Camellia weevil (Curculio chinensis) (CW) is an obligate seed parasite of Camellia oleifera plants. Our previous study linked the CW's gut microbiome to the tolerance of the tea saponin (TS) in C. oleifera seeds. However, the source of these gut microbiomes, the key bacteria involved in TS tolerance, and the degradation functions of these bacteria remain unresolved.

RESULTS

Our study indicated that CW gut microbiome was more affected by the microbiome from soil than that from fruits. The soil-derived Acinetobacter served as the core bacterial genus, and Acinetobacter sp. was putatively regarded responsible for the saponin-degradation in CW guts. Subsequent experiments using fluorescently labeled cultures verified that the isolate Acinetobacter sp. AS23 can migrate into CW larval guts, and ultimately endow its host with the ability to degrade saponin, thereby allowing CW to subsist as a pest within plant fruits resisting to higher concentration of defensive chemical.

CONCLUSIONS

The systematic studies of the sources of gut microorganisms, the screening of taxa involved in plant secondary metabolite degradation, and the investigation of bacteria responsible for CW toxicity mitigation provide clarified evidence that the intestinal microorganisms can mediate the tolerance of herbivorous insects against plant toxins. Soil Environments Influence Gut Prokaryotic Communities in the Larvae of the Invasive Japanese Beetle Popillia japonica Newman

Invasive scarab beetles, like the Japanese beetle Popillia japonica Newman (JB), spend most of their lives as larvae feeding in the soil matrix. Despite the potential importance of the larval gut microbial community in driving the behavior, physiology, and nutritional ecology of this invasive insect, the role of soil biological and physicochemical characteristics in shaping this community are relatively unknown. Our objectives were to (1) characterize the degree to which larval gut microbial communities are environmentally acquired, (2) examine the combined effects of the gut region (i.e., midgut, hindgut) and local soil environments on gut microbial communities, and (3) search for soil physicochemical correlates that could be useful in future studies aimed at characterizing gut microbial community variation in soil-dwelling scarabs. Gut communities from neonates that were never in contact with the soil were different from gut communities of third instar larvae collected from the field, with neonate gut communities being significantly less rich and diverse. The influence of compartment (soil, midgut, or hindgut) on prokaryotic α- and β-diversity varied with location, suggesting that JB larval gut communities are at least partially shaped by the local environment even though the influence of compartment was more pronounced. Midgut microbiota contained transient communities that varied with the surrounding soil environment whereas hindgut microbiota was more conserved. Prokaryotic communities in the hindgut clustered separately from those of soil and midgut, which displayed greater interspersion in ordination space. Soil cation exchange capacity, organic matter, water holding capacity, and texture were moderately correlated (≥29%) with gut prokaryotic microbial composition, especially within the midgut. Findings suggest that microbial communities associated with the JB gut are partially a function of adaptation to local soil environments. However, conditions within each gut compartment appear to shape those communities in transit through the alimentary canal.

Recently introduced Wolbachia reduces bacterial species richness and reshapes bacterial community structure in Nilaparvata lugens

BACKGROUND

Wolbachia has been developed as an effective tool to suppress insect pests and arbovirus transmission. Recently, the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens, a serious agricultural pest, has been successfully transinfected with Wolbachia wStri strain from Laodelphax striatellus. However, before conducting the field experiments, the impacts of wStri on the bacterial microbiota in N. lugens and how it differs from native Wolbachia wLug strain have not been clarified.

RESULTS

Here, we found that wStri reduced bacterial diversity and shaped bacterial community structure more than wLug in both developmental stage and different adult tissues. Overall, the relative abundance of Wolbachia was negatively correlated with bacterial diversity, but the bacterial diversity gradually decreased only when the relative abundance of Wolbachia was higher than 60%. Further analysis found that wStri reduced species richness of other bacteria but not their evenness. wStri infection also affected many bacterial functions (e.g., amino acid metabolism & signaling and cellular processes) in the developmental stages, with a stronger effect than wLug in nymphs. Moreover, although Wolbachia occupied a high relative abundance in infected individuals, Acinetobacter was consistently a core part of microbiome.

CONCLUSION

These results showed the significant impacts of recently introduced wStri on bacterial microbiota in N. lugens, with the effects differing from native wLug. This study will aid in understanding the relationship between Wolbachia, its host and the host's microbiota, and provide a reference for future field experiments.

Harnessing the potential use of cellulolytic Klebsiella oxytoca (M21WG) and Klebsiella sp. (Z6WG) isolated from the guts of termites (Isoptera)

Background

For many years, denim-heavy quality cotton twill colored with indigo colors and with a well-worn/faded look has held a lot of appeal. Machine damage, drainage system blockage, and other issues come with the conventional usage of pumice stones for “stone-washing” denims. In view of the abovementioned information, a range of works has been done to investigate the economic prospects of bacterial cellulase enzymes for use in industrial processes, including biopolishing in the textile sector. Ethiopia has excellent termite diversity to isolate bacterial gut-associated cellulose enzymes for biostoning applications. The main purpose of this study was, therfore, to decipher how to isolate and characterize cellulase enzymes from termite (Isoptera) gut bacteria with the intention of employing it for biostoning of textiles.

Purpose

To use cellulolytic enzymes of Klebsiella oxytoca (M21WG) and Klebsiella sp. (Z6WG) isolated from termite guts in biostoning of textiles and improving garment quality.

Methods

Cellulase enzyme-producing bacteria were isolated and screened from the guts of worker termites sampled from Meki and Zeway termite mounds in the Central Rift Valley region of Ethiopia. Bacterial screening, biochemical, morphological, and 16S rRNA sequence identification techniques were employed to characterize the bacterial strains. In addition, the production, optimization, and purification of the associated cellulase enzymes were employed, and the potential application of the enzymes for biostoning of a textile was demonstrated.

Result

The isolated M21WG was found to be 99% identical to the Klebsiella oxytoca (MT104573.1) strain, while the isolated Z6WG showed 97.3% identity to the Klebsiella sp. strain (MN629242.1). At an ideal pH of 7, a temperature of 37 °C, a 72-h incubation time, and a substrate concentration of 1.5% carboxymethylcellulose sodium, the maximum activity of the crude cellulase extract from these bacteria was assessed. These bacteria produced cellulase enzymes that were moderately efficient. Consequently, it was determined that the cellulase enzymes were effective for biostoning of denim cloth.

Conclusion

It was determined that Klebsiella oxytoca (M21WG) and Klebsiella sp. (Z6WG) could be used as a doorway to better understand harnessing the use of these cellulase-producing bacteria from termite (Isoptera) guts. In this study, it was also attempted to assess the effectiveness of the two bacterial isolates in biostoning in anticipation of their potential application in the textile realm.

Increased Tea Saponin Content Influences the Diversity and Function of Plantation Soil Microbiomes

Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) can affect the structures and functions of soil microbiomes. However, the core bacteria associated with PSMs, and their corresponding functions have not been explored extensively. In this study, soil physicochemical properties, tea saponin (TS) contents, microbial community compositions, and microbial community functions of different-age Camellia oleifera plantation soils from representative regions were analyzed. We evaluated the effects of plantation age increase on PSM accumulation, and the subsequent consequences on the structures and functions of soil microbiomes. Plantation ages increase positively correlated with accumulated TS contents, negative effects on soil physicochemical properties, and soil microbiome structures and functions. Clearly, the core functions of soil microbiomes transitioned to those associated with PSM metabolisms, while microbial pathways involved in cellulose degradation were inhibited. Our study systematically explored the influences of PSMs on soil microbiomes via the investigation of key bacterial populations and their functional pathways. With the increase in planting years, increased TS content simplified soil microbiome diversity, inhibited the degradation of organic matter, and enriched the genes related to the degradation of TS. These findings significantly advance our understanding on PSMs-microbiome interactions and could provide fundamental and important data for sustainable management of Camellia plantations.

IMPORTANCE Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) contained in plant litter will be released into soil with the decomposition process, which will affect the diversity and function of soil microbiomes. The response of soil microbiomes to PSMs in terms of diversity and function can provide an important theoretical basis for plantations to put forward rational soil ecological management measures. The effects of planting years on PSM content, soil physicochemical properties, microbial diversity, and function, as well as the interaction between each index in Camellia oleifera plantation soil are still unclear. We found that, with planting years increased, the accumulation of tea saponin (TS) led to drastic changes in the diversity and function of soil microbiomes, which hindered the decomposition of organic matter and enriched many genes related to PSM degradation. We first found that soil bacteria, represented by Acinetobacter, were significantly associated with TS degradation. Our results provide important data for proposing rational soil management measures for pure forest plantations.

Integrated Microbiome-Metabolome Analysis Reveals Stage-Dependent Alterations in Bacterial Degradation of Aromatics in Leptinotarsa decemlineata

To avoid potential harm during pupation, the Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata lives in two different habitats throughout its developmental excursion, with the larva and adult settling on potato plants and the pupa in soil. Potato plants and agricultural soil contain a specific subset of aromatics. In the present study, we intended to determine whether the stage-specific bacterial flora plays a role in the catabolism of aromatics in L. decemlineata. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) obtained by sequencing of culture-independent 16S rRNA region enriched a group of bacterial genes involved in the elimination of mono- and polycyclic aromatics at the pupal stage compared with those at the larval and adult periods. Consistently, metabolome analysis revealed that dozens of monoaromatics such as styrene, benzoates, and phenols, polycyclic aromatics, for instance, naphthalene and steroids, were more abundant in the pupal sample. Moreover, a total of seven active pathways were uncovered in the pupal specimen. These ways were associated with the biodegradation of benzoate, 4-methoxybenzoate, fluorobenzoates, styrene, vanillin, benzamide, and naphthalene. In addition, the metabolomic profiles and the catabolism abilities were significantly different in the pupae where their bacteria were removed by a mixture of three antibiotics. Therefore, our data suggested the stage-dependent alterations in bacterial breakdown of aromatics in L. decemlineata.

An Overview of Antimicrobial Compounds from African Edible Insects and Their Associated Microbiota

The need for easily biodegradable and less toxic chemicals in drug development and pest control continues to fuel the exploration and discovery of new natural molecules. Like certain plants, some insects can also respond rapidly to microbial infections by producing a plethora of immune-induced molecules that include antibacterial and antifungal peptides/polypeptides (AMPs), among other structurally diverse small molecules. The recent recognition that new natural product-derived scaffolds are urgently needed to tackle life-threatening pathogenic infections has been prompted by the health threats posed by multidrug resistance. Although many researchers have concentrated on the discovery of AMPs, surprisingly, edible insect-produced AMPs/small molecules have received little attention. This review will discuss the recent advances in the identification and bioactivity analysis of insect AMPs, with a focus on small molecules associated with the microbiota of selected African edible insects. These molecules could be used as templates for developing next-generation drugs to combat multidrug-resistant pathogens.

Comparative phylo-pangenomics reveals generalist lifestyles in representative Acinetobacter species and proposes candidate gene markers for species identification

Acinetobacter species have the potential to invade and colonize immunocompromised patients, therefore being well-known as opportunistic pathogens. Among these bacteria, the species of the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-Acinetobacter baumannii "complex" (Acb members) emerge as the main often isolated bacteria in clinical specimens. The unequivocal taxonomy is crucial to correctly identify these species and associated with comparative genomic analyses aids to understand their life-styles as well. In this study, all publicly available Acinetobacter species at the date of this study preparation were analyzed. The results revealed that the Acb members are in fact a complex when phenotypic methods are confronted, while for comparative and phylogenomics analyses this term is misleading, since they composed a monophyletic group instead. Nine best gene markers (response regulator, recJ, recG, phosphomannomutase, pepSY, monovalent cation/H + antiporter subunit D, mnmE, glnE, and bamA) were selected for identification of Acinetobacter species. Moreover, representative strains of each species were split according their isolation sources in the categories: environmental, human, insect and non-human vertebrate. Neither niche-specific genome signature nor niche-associated functional and pathogenic potential were associated with their isolation source, meaning it is not the main force acting on Acinetobacter adaptation in a given niche and corroborating that their ubiquitous distribution is a reflex of their generalist life-styles.

Studies on the characteristics and mechanism of aerobic biodegradation of tetrabromobisphenol A by Irpex lacteus F17

The study investigated the characteristics of aerobic degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by Irpex lacteus F17 (I. lacteus F17) under four different cometabolic substrates (phenol, glucose, sodium pyruvate, and sodium citrate). The biodegradation of TBBPA by I. lacteus F17 could be enhanced via cometabolism, and glucose (8 g/L) was confirmed to be the optimum carbon source. For different initial solution pH ranging from 3.0 to 8.0, the results showed that I. lacteus F17 could be applied to biodegrade TBBPA in a wide pH range of 4.0-8.0, and the degradation rate could reach the maximum 75.31%, while the debromination rate reached the maximum 12.40% under pH 5.0. In addition, it has been confirmed that Mn²⁺ (50 μmol/L) could promote the secretion of manganese peroxidase and TBBPA biodegradation efficiency. Seven intermediates were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, and the possible degradation pathways were proposed, which indicated the biodegradation of TBBPA might be subjected to debromination, β-scission, hydroxylation, deprotonation, and oxidation reactions.

Phenol Removal Capacity of the Common Duckweed (Lemna minor L.) and Six Phenol-Resistant Bacterial Strains From Its Rhizosphere: In Vitro Evaluation at High Phenol Concentrations

The main topic of this study is the bioremediation potential of the common duckweed, Lemna minor L., and selected rhizospheric bacterial strains in removing phenol from aqueous environments at extremely high initial phenol concentrations. To that end, fluorescence microscopy, MIC tests, biofilm formation, the phenol removal test (4-AAP method), the Salkowski essay, and studies of multiplication rates of sterile and inoculated duckweed in MS medium with phenol (200, 500, 750, and 1000 mg L⁻¹) were conducted. Out of seven bacterial strains, six were identified as epiphytes or endophytes that efficiently removed phenol. The phenol removal experiment showed that the bacteria/duckweed system was more efficient during the first 24 h compared to the sterile duckweed control group. At the end of this experiment, almost 90% of the initial phenol concentration was removed by both groups, respectively. The bacteria stimulated the duckweed multiplication even at a high bacterial population density (>10⁵ CFU mL⁻¹) over a prolonged period of time (14 days). All bacterial strains were sensitive to all the applied antibiotics and formed biofilms in vitro. The dual bacteria/duckweed system, especially the one containing strain 43-Hafnia paralvei C32-106/3, Accession No. MF526939, had a number of characteristics that are advantageous in bioremediation, such as high phenol removal efficiency, biofilm formation, safety (antibiotic sensitivity), and stimulation of duckweed multiplication.

Most dominant roles of insect gut bacteria: digestion, detoxification, or essential nutrient provision?

BACKGROUND

The insect gut microbiota has been shown to contribute to the host's digestion, detoxification, development, pathogen resistance, and physiology. However, there is poor information about the ranking of these roles. Most of these results were obtained with cultivable bacteria, whereas the bacterial physiology may be different between free-living and midgut-colonizing bacteria. In this study, we provided both proteomic and genomic evidence on the ranking of the roles of gut bacteria by investigating the anal droplets from a weevil, Cryptorhynchus lapathi.

RESULTS

The gut lumen and the anal droplets showed qualitatively and quantitatively different subsets of bacterial communities. The results of 16S rRNA sequencing showed that the gut lumen is dominated by Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, whereas the anal droplets are dominated by Proteobacteria. From the anal droplets, enzymes involved in 31 basic roles that belong to 7 super roles were identified by Q-TOF MS. The cooperation between the weevil and its gut bacteria was determined by reconstructing community pathway maps, which are defined in this study. A score was used to rank the gut bacterial roles. The results from the proteomic data indicate that the most dominant role of gut bacteria is amino acid biosynthesis, followed by protein digestion, energy metabolism, vitamin biosynthesis, lipid digestion, plant secondary metabolite (PSM) degradation, and carbohydrate digestion, while the order from the genomic data is amino acid biosynthesis, vitamin biosynthesis, lipid digestion, energy metabolism, protein digestion, PSM degradation, and carbohydrate digestion. The PCA results showed that the gut bacteria form functional groups from the point of view of either the basic role or super role, and the MFA results showed that there are functional variations among gut bacteria. In addition, the variations between the proteomic and genomic data, analyzed with the HMFA method from the point of view of either the bacterial community or individual bacterial species, are presented.

CONCLUSION

The most dominant role of gut bacteria is essential nutrient provisioning, followed by digestion and detoxification. The weevil plays a pioneering role in diet digestion and mainly digests macromolecules into smaller molecules which are then mainly digested by gut bacteria.

Characterization of a pH-Tolerant Strain Cobetia sp. SASS1 and Its Phenol Degradation Performance Under Salinity Condition

Biological treatment of complex saline phenolic wastewater remains a great challenge due to the low activity of bacterial populations under stressful conditions. Acid mine drainage (AMD) as a typically extreme environment, shaped unique AMD microbial communities. Microorganisms survived in the AMD environment have evolved various mechanisms of resistance to low pH, high salinity and toxic heavy metals. The primary goal of this work was to determine whether a strain isolated from an AMD could degrade phenol under stressful conditions such as low pH, high salinity and heavy metals. The results suggested that the strain Cobetia sp. SASS1 isolated from AMD presented different physiological characteristics in comparison with five most closely related species. SASS1 can efficiently degrade phenol at wide ranges of pH (3.0-9.0) and NaCl concentration (0-40 g/L), as well as the existence of Cu2+ and Mn2+. Specifically, the SASS1 could completely degrade 1500 mg/L phenol in 80 h at 10 g/L NaCl. Meanwhile, mineralization of phenol was achieved with complete degradation of 900 mg/L phenol and simultaneously COD decreasing from 2239 mg/L to 181.6 mg/L in 36 h. Based on biodegradation metabolites identification and enzyme activities analysis, both ortho-cleavage pathway and benzoic acid pathway for phenol degradation were proposed. These findings suggested that SASS1 was an efficient phenol degrader under salinity and acidic conditions, and could be considered as key population for bioremediation of industrial phenolic wastewaters under stressful conditions.

Carbon ecology of termite gut and phenol degradation by a bacterium isolated from the gut of termite

Metagenomics and transcriptomics have had some success analyzing community and functional ecology of the termite gut, but carbon utilization ecology and the effect of diet on the gut community are not well understood. This study was done to determine the effect of three hardwood tree types, oak (Quercus spp.), red maple (Acer rubrum), and tupelo (Nyssa aquatica) on the termite species, Reticulitermes flavipes in the family Rhinotermitidae. Termite abdomen homogenates were incubated on agar plates containing three common carbon sources in the termite gut, namely, acetate, cellobiose, and phenol under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Bacterial growth was higher on cellobiose than any other carbon source. Higher bacterial growth on cellobiose was observed from termite colonies feeding on oak than on phenol from the other two wood types. The difference between aerobic and anaerobic conditions was not significant. A bacterium, Acinetobacter tandoii isolated and identified from our previous study was subjected to high concentrations of phenol as the sole carbon source and this bacterium was able to degrade phenol concentration up to 600 mg/L.

Mapping the diversity of microbial lignin catabolism: experiences from the eLignin database

Lignin is a heterogeneous aromatic biopolymer and a major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass, such as wood and agricultural residues. Despite the high amount of aromatic carbon present, the severe recalcitrance of the lignin macromolecule makes it difficult to convert into value-added products. In nature, lignin and lignin-derived aromatic compounds are catabolized by a consortia of microbes specialized at breaking down the natural lignin and its constituents. In an attempt to bridge the gap between the fundamental knowledge on microbial lignin catabolism, and the recently emerging field of applied biotechnology for lignin biovalorization, we have developed the eLignin Microbial Database ( www.elignindatabase.com ), an openly available database that indexes data from the lignin bibliome, such as microorganisms, aromatic substrates, and metabolic pathways. In the present contribution, we introduce the eLignin database, use its dataset to map the reported ecological and biochemical diversity of the lignin microbial niches, and discuss the findings.
