Magnetic nanoparticles coated with aminated polymer brush as a novel material for effective removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous environments

Mussel-Inspired Caries Management Strategy: Constructing a Tribioactive Tooth Surface with Remineralization, Antibiofilm, and Anti-inflammation Activity

Dental caries is a common chronic oral disease in humans resulting from tooth demineralization caused by acid production of bacterial plaque, which leads to the destruction of enamel and dentin and oral inflammation. However, it is still a challenge that the function of natural active ingredients in currently available oral care products is not comprehensive, especially the lack of remineralization. Here, inspired by the strong biological adhesion ability of mussels and ancient oral disease plant therapy, a multifunctional strategy is proposed to construct a bioactive tooth surface to treat dental caries. It has been demonstrated that the Turkish gall extract (TGE) can inhibit adhesion of cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Actinomyces viscosus and destroy biofilms on the tooth surface. Meanwhile, TGE can reduce the expression of inflammatory factors. Notably, the TGE coating can induce the growth of hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals in vivo and in vitro, recovering the enamel mechanical properties under normal oral conditions. MD simulations interpreted the adsorption mechanism by which the hydroxyl groups in TGE bind to phosphate group (PO₄^3-) on the tooth surface, attracting calcium ions (Ca²⁺) as nucleation sites for remineralization. This work underlines the importance of TGE coating in remineralization, antibiofilm, and anti-inflammation activity as a promising strategy for dental caries.

Synthesis and adsorption properties of gelatin-conjugated hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles for lead removal from wastewater

Gelatin-conjugated hematite nanoparticles (HT NPs) are prepared through the solid-state phase transformation in the presence of phosphate. Their adsorption capacity and kinetics are investigated for Pb removal in wastewater. The gelatin-conjugated HT NPs with a size of 4-6 nm exhibit an excellent Pb removal performance, with a high adsorption capacity of 169.49 mg g^-1 and a fast equilibrium adsorption kinetics, attributed to the large number of active sites and highly negative charge on the surface of HT NPs. Moreover, the magnetic property of HT NPs enables to selectively collect NPs in the wastewater by using a permanent magnet, leading to its high reusability.

Insights into the adsorption mechanism of tannic acid by a green synthesized nano-hydroxyapatite and its effect on aqueous Cu(II) removal

The polyphenolic tannic acid (TA) has been widely used in the stabilization and surface modification of nanomaterials. The interaction mechanism of TA with the biogenic nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) and its environmental importance, however, are poorly understood. This study explored the adsorption of TA using the green synthesized, eggshell-derived nHAP and implications of this process for the removal of aqueous Cu(II) via batch adsorption experiments, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigations. TA adsorption by nHAP was a complex pH-dependent process and significantly correlated with TA molecule speciation and amphoteric properties of nHAP via multiple adsorption modes including surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bond. The maximum TA adsorption amount was found to be 94.8 mg/g for less crystalline nHAP with lower calcination temperature. In the ternary Cu-TA-nHAP systems, TA promoted Cu(II) adsorption at pH < 5 and reduced Cu(II) uptake at pH > 5. Further studies of the effects of ionic strength and addition sequences, as well as Raman, FTIR, and XPS analyses revealed Cu(II) adsorption on nHAP was mainly dominated by inner-sphere surface complexation. These results can shed light on not only the utility of biogenic nHAP for TA and Cu(II) adsorption but also the evaluation of the effect of TA on the environmental behavior of heavy metals.

Heavy metals biosorption mechanism of partially delignified products derived from mango (Mangifera indica) and guava (Psidium guiag) barks

This paper evaluates the biosorption of toxic metal ions onto the bioadsorbents derived from mango (Mangifera indica) and guava (Psidium guiag) barks and their metal fixation mechanisms. Maximum metal biosorption capacities of the mango bioadsorbent were found in the following increasing order (mg/g): Hg (16.24) < Cu (22.24) < Cd (25.86) < Pb (60.85). Maximum metal biosorption capacities of guava bioadsorbent follow similar order (mg/g): Hg (21.48) < Cu (30.36) < Cd (32.54) < Pb (70.25), but with slightly higher adsorption capacities. The removal mechanisms of heavy metals using bioadsorbents have been ascertained by studying their surface properties and functional groups using various spectrometric, spectroscopic, and microscopic methods. Whewellite (C2CaO4·H2O) has been identified in bioadsorbents based on the characterization of their surface properties using X-ray techniques (XPS and XRD), facilitating the ion exchange of metal ions with Ca2+ bonded with carboxylate moieties. For both the bioadsorbents, the Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ are biosorbed completely by ion exchange with Ca2+ (89-94%) and Mg2+ (7-12%), whereas Hg2+ is biosorbed partially (57-66%) by ion exchange with Ca2+ (38-42%) and Mg2+ (19-24%) due to involvement of other cations in the ion exchange processes. Bioadsorbents contain lignin which act as electron donor and reduced Cr(VI) into Cr(III) (29.87 and 37.25 mg/g) in acidic medium. Anionic Cr(VI) was not adsorbed onto bioadsorbents at higher pH due to their electrostatic repulsion with negatively charged carboxylic functional groups.

Enhanced Cr(VI) removal from water using a green synthesized nanocrystalline chlorapatite: Physicochemical interpretations and fixed-bed column mathematical model study

Apatite-based minerals have attracted much attention in the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated environment. However, exploring apatite with efficient adsorption performance for inorganic oxyanions such as Cr(VI) remains a challenge. Herein, a novel nanocrystalline chlorapatite (ClAP) was promptly prepared by a green method using eggshell wastes as calcium source with the purpose to enhance Cr(VI) adsorption capability. The generated ClAP was characterized by XRD, SEM-EPMA, TEM, FTIR, and BET analyses. Batch and column experiments were subsequently carried out to explore the influencing factors, adsorption capacity and removal mechanism. Results showed that ClAP exhibited excellent stability and adsorption performance for Cr(VI) (63.47 mg g^-1), which was much greater than that of hydroxyapatite and most reported materials. The adsorption process was fitted well by the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model. In fixed bed column experiments, a novel time-fractional derivative model exhibited much better suitability in interpreting the observed breakthrough curves of Cr(VI) than traditional models. Furthermore, the reusability of ClAP in column was evaluated. Results showed that the adsorption capacity maintained well after consecutively reused for five cycles. Studies of the effect of pH, as well as FTIR and XPS investigations indicated that Cr(VI) adsorption was mainly ascribed to electrostatic interactions and surface complexation, while the reduction of Cr(VI) to the low-toxicity Cr(III) also existed in the adsorption process. The ClAP adsorbent was also successfully used for Cr(VI) remediation from real wastewater. Hence, nanocrystalline ClAP can be a promising material for enhancing the elimination of oxyanion contaminants such as Cr(VI) from water.

Prussian Blue: A Safe Pigment with Zeolitic-Like Activity

Prussian blue (PB) and PB analogues (PBA) are coordination network materials that present important similarities with zeolites concretely with their ability of adsorbing cations. Depending on the conditions of preparation, which is cheap and easy, PB can be classified into soluble PB and insoluble PB. The zeolitic-like properties are mainly inherent to insoluble form. This form presents some defects in its cubic lattice resulting in an open structure. The vacancies make PB capable of taking up and trapping ions or molecules into the lattice. Important adsorption characteristics of PB are a high specific area (370 m2 g-1 determined according the BET theory), uniform pore diameter, and large pore width. PB has numerous applications in many scientific and technological fields. PB are assembled into nanoparticles that, due to their biosafety and biocompatibility, can be used for biomedical applications. PB and PBA have been shown to be excellent sorbents of radioactive cesium and radioactive and nonradioactive thallium. Other cations adsorbed by PB are K+, Na+, NH4+, and some divalent cations. PB can also capture gaseous molecules, hydrocarbons, and even luminescent molecules such as 2-aminoanthracene. As the main adsorptive application of PB is the selective removal of cations from the environment, it is important to easily separate the sorbent of the purified solution. To facilitate this, PB is encapsulated into a polymer or coats a support, sometimes magnetic particles. Finally, is remarkable to point out that PB can be recycled and the adsorbed material can be recovered.

Adsorptive removal of trace thallium(I) from wastewater: A review and new perspectives

Thallium is an emerging pollutant reported in wastewater along with the increasing mining and smelting of thallium-containing ores in recent years. The complete removal of Tl(I) from wastewater is of significant emergency due to its high toxicity and mobility, however, Tl(I) removal is always confronted with numerous technical difficulties because of the extremely low Tl(I) concentration in wastewater and the disturbances of many accompanying impurity ions. Adsorption is currently the most widely used method for Tl(I) removal on industrial scale and varied kinds of adsorbents such as Prussian blue analogues, biosorbents, and metal oxides have been developed. However, the adsorption process of Tl(I) is always affected by the co-existing cations, resulting in low Tl(I) removal efficiency. Recently, the development of a variety of novel adsorbents or ion sensors based on macrocyclic compounds for enrichment and accurate determination of trace Tl(I) in aqueous solutions exhibits great potential for application in Tl(I) removal from wastewater with high selectivity and process efficiency. This paper provides an overview of the adsorption methods for Tl(I) removal from wastewater with emphasis on complexation properties between varied types of adsorbents and Tl(I). Future directions of research and development of adsorptive Tl(I) removal from industrial wastewater are proposed.

Alginate-based magnetic nanosorbent immobilized with aptamer for selective and high adsorption of Hg2+ in water samples

Alginate-coated magnetic nanocluster (MNC) immobilized with Hg²⁺-specific aptamer was synthesized to obtain the nanosorbent with high adsorption capacity and high selectivity for trace analysis of inorganic mercury (Hg²⁺) in water samples. Magnetite nanoparticle was first synthesized by a co-precipitation of iron precursors in the presence of alginate to obtain alginate-coated MNC, followed by immobilization with avidin. Hg²⁺-Specific DNA aptamer labeled with biotin was then conjugated on the MNC surface via specific avidin-biotin interaction to form aptamer-immobilized MNC. Coating the MNC with alginate can improve its water dispersibility and also increase its adsorption capacity toward Hg²⁺ (350 mg/g). It exhibited high selectivity through thymine-Hg²⁺-thymine (T-Hg²⁺-T) interaction with high tolerance to other foreign ions. This nanosorbent showed linearity over the Hg²⁺ concentration range of 0.2-10 μg/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.9977, limit of detection of 0.46 μg/L, and enrichment factor of 13. Moreover, it also showed a potential for detection of Hg²⁺ in drinking and tap water samples with satisfactory recoveries.
