A novel sorbent for removal of reactive textile dye: TDPA-KCl

Design and modeling of the decolorization characteristics of a regenerable and eco-friendly geopolymer: Batch and dynamic flow mode treatment aspects

One of the most important environmental and health issues today is the elimination of the dye pollution from the contaminated water ecosystem. The use of geopolymers to eliminate such contaminants has recently emerged as a promising alternative. In this study, metakaolin based geopolymer (MKBG) was synthesized to be a promising adsorbent for Basic Blue 7 (BB7). To optimize the input parameters (solution pH, MKBG dose, mixing time, temperature, mixing speed, column diameter, and flow rate) towards BB7 removal by MKBG, a Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed to develop the response model, followed by numerical optimization. The quadratic models correlating the adsorption variables to BB7 adsorption yield as responses were developed for batch and dynamic flow systems. The pseudo-second-order model accurately predicted the BB7 adsorption kinetics on MKBG. Decolorization yields of BB7 in batch and continuous systems reached 96 % and 56 %, respectively. The Langmuir model accurately described equilibrium data, thereby justifying monolayer and homogeneous adsorption. The MKBG demonstrated significant reusability up to 20 dynamic flow adsorption cycles. IR, SEM, and zeta potential measurements were used to describe the sorbent structure, and the mechanism of MKBG-BB7 interaction was assessed. Overall, MKBG offers a good application potential for the treatment of basic dye contaminated waters.

Pollutants Sorbent Made of Cotton Fabric Modified with Chitosan-Glutaraldehyde and Zinc Oxide Particles

The paper reports on the preparation of composite materials by modifying cotton fabric with a layer of crosslinked glutaraldehyde chitosan containing zinc oxide particles. The ability of chitosan to form complexes with zinc ions has been used to control the size, structure, and distribution of the particles on the fiber surface. The three different obtained materials have been characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and fluorescent analysis. It has been found that the interaction of the ZnO particles with the functional groups of chitosan affects its swelling ability in water and thus determines its sorption properties. The capacity of the materials to wipe water-soluble (textile reactive dye) and water-insoluble (crude oil and oil products) contaminants has been compared. The effect that the amount of zinc oxide has on the ability of the materials to remove contaminants has also been studied. The possibility for adsorption–desorption of the crude oil and reuse of the sorbent material has been investigated as well.

Removal of color from real textile dyeing effluent utilizing tannin immobilized jute fiber as biosorbent: optimization with response surface methodology

The present study explored an efficient technoeconomic method for treating intensely colored dyeing effluents from a commercial source. Firstly, the adsorption efficacy of jute fiber (JF) was enhanced through grafting with tannin, a natural polyphenol, via incorporation of active epoxy groups by epichlorohydrin onto fiber surface. The effect of different experimental parameters (e.g., initial pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, and contact time) on extent of color removal was evaluated performing batch studies. A full factorial central composite design (CCD) in response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the decolorization process for achieving maximum color removal (99.5%) at pH 4.9, adsorbent dose 11.8 g/L, temperature 30 °C, and time of contact 117.8 min. The isotherm and kinetic studies of the process revealed that Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model provided best fit, yielding high correlation coefficients (R² > 0.997). Significant desorption (76%) of the spent adsorbent by 0.1 M NaOH solution suggested that this tannin-modified JF can find a prospective practical application as a novel, inexpensive, and potential bioadsorbent to treat the dyeing effluent.
