One-pot synthesis of multi-functional and environmental friendly tannic acid polymer with Fe3+ and formaldehyde as double crosslinking agents for selective removal of cation pollutants

Tannic acid: a crosslinker leading to versatile functional polymeric networks: a review

With the thriving of mussel-inspired polyphenol chemistry as well as the demand for low-cost analogues to polydopamine in adhesive design, tannic acid has gradually become a research focus because of its wide availability, health benefits and special chemical properties. As a natural building block, tannic acid could be used as a crosslinker either supramolecularly or chemically, ensuring versatile functional polymeric networks for various applications. Up to now, a systematic summary on tannic-acid-based networks has still been waiting for an update and outlook. In this review, the common features of tannic acid are summarized in detail, followed by the introduction of covalent and non-covalent crosslinking methods leading to various tannic-acid-based materials. Moreover, recent progress in the application of tannic acid composites is also summarized, including bone regeneration, skin adhesives, wound dressings, drug loading and photothermal conversion. Above all, we also provide further prospects concerning tannic-acid-crosslinked materials.

A novel synthesis of sulfurized magnetic biochar for aqueous Hg(II) capture as a potential method for environmental remediation in water

Due to public health threats resulting from mercury (Hg) and its distribution in the food chain, global restrictions have been placed on Hg use and emissions. Biochar is a porous, carbonaceous adsorbent typically derived from waste biomass or organic matter, making it an eco-friendly material for aqueous mercury (Hg(II)) control. Functionalization of biochar can improve performance in pollution control applications. In this work, carbonization, magnetization, and sulfurization of biochar were combined into a single heating step to prepare sulfurized magnetic biochar (SMBC) for Hg(II) removal from water. Results indicate that SMBC prepared at 600 °C adsorbed 8.93 mg/g Hg(II), more than materials prepared at 400, 500, 700, 800, and 900 °C. Additionally, Hg(II) adsorption onto SMBC was 53.0% and 11.5% greater than onto magnetic biochar (MBC) and biochar (BC), respectively. Hg(II) adsorption is shown to be favorable in acidic conditions (pH 3.5-5), thermodynamically spontaneous, and endothermic. Adsorption results fit the pseudo-second-order (R² = 0.990 and the sum of squared error (SSE) = 5.382) and external mass transfer (R² = 0.971 and SSE = 9.422) models. The partitioning coefficients were 4.964 mg/g/μM in freshwater, 0.176 mg/g/μM in estuary water, and 0.275 mg/g/μM in seawater, highlighting the importance of salinity in environmental remediation applications. In summary, SMBC can be readily prepared with minimal processing steps. The product is a robust adsorbent for Hg(II), and it can potentially be applied to remediate contaminated water/sediment/soil in the future.

Removal of color from real textile dyeing effluent utilizing tannin immobilized jute fiber as biosorbent: optimization with response surface methodology

The present study explored an efficient technoeconomic method for treating intensely colored dyeing effluents from a commercial source. Firstly, the adsorption efficacy of jute fiber (JF) was enhanced through grafting with tannin, a natural polyphenol, via incorporation of active epoxy groups by epichlorohydrin onto fiber surface. The effect of different experimental parameters (e.g., initial pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, and contact time) on extent of color removal was evaluated performing batch studies. A full factorial central composite design (CCD) in response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the decolorization process for achieving maximum color removal (99.5%) at pH 4.9, adsorbent dose 11.8 g/L, temperature 30 °C, and time of contact 117.8 min. The isotherm and kinetic studies of the process revealed that Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model provided best fit, yielding high correlation coefficients (R² > 0.997). Significant desorption (76%) of the spent adsorbent by 0.1 M NaOH solution suggested that this tannin-modified JF can find a prospective practical application as a novel, inexpensive, and potential bioadsorbent to treat the dyeing effluent.

Modification of epoxy groups of poly(hydroxylmethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) cryogel with H3PO4 as adsorbent for removal of hazardous pollutants

Poly(hydroxylmethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (p(HEMA-GMA)) macroporous cryogel with high density of epoxy groups was synthesized, and the epoxy groups of the cryogel were modified into phosphonate groups. The effects of dye concentrations, adsorption time, pH, salt concentration, and adsorption temperature on the adsorption of Direct Blue-53 (DB-53) and Reactive Blue-160 (RB-160) dyes were studied. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 245.3 and 155.8 mg/g (0.255 or 0.119 mmol/g) for the DB-53 and RB-160 dyes, respectively. The higher adsorption capacity achieved for the DB-53 compared with the RB-160 dye can result from the pendant primary amino groups of the DB-53 dye as well as the smaller size of the dye molecule. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well described the experimental data. The p(HEMA-GMA)-PO₄^2- adsorbent has many operational advantages for the removal of pollutants. It could be a promising adsorbent to be used in industrial wastewater treatment.
