Surface composition and catalytic activity of an iron mining residue for simultaneous degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics

Iron-bearing mining reject as an alternative and effective catalyst for photo-Fenton oxidation of phenol in water

In this work, iron-bearing mining reject was employed as an alternative and potential low-cost catalyst to degrade phenol in water by photo-Fenton strategy. Various techniques, including SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, and XRD, were applied to evaluate the material's properties. Process parameters such as hydrogen peroxide concentration, catalyst dosage, and pH were studied to determine the optimum reaction conditions ([catalyst] = 0.75 g L-1, [H2O2] = 7.5 mM, and pH = 3). Phenol degradation and mineralization efficiencies at 180 and 300 min were 96.5 and 78%, respectively. These satisfactory results can be associated with the iron amount present in the waste sample. Furthermore, the material showed high catalytic activity and negligible iron leaching even after the fourth reuse cycle. The degradation behavior of phenol in water was well represented by a kinetic model based on the Fermi function. The iron-bearing mining reject can be considered a potential photo-Fenton catalyst for phenol degradation in wastewater.

Effective degradation of tetracycline via recyclable cellulose nanofibrils/polyvinyl alcohol/Fe3O4 hybrid hydrogel as a photo-Fenton catalyst

In this work, the method of in-situ co-precipitation was used to prepare PVA/CNF/Fe₃O₄ hybrid hydrogel, and the relationship between its structure and performance was explored. The Fe₃O₄NPs prepared by this method were dispersed on the carrier PVA/CNF hydrogel and were easy to recover. The catalytic degradation of tetracycline was investigated using PVA/CNF/Fe₃O₄ hybrid hydrogel as photo-Fenton catalysts. The results showed that light and hydrogel carriers were pivotal factors in promoting Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ cycling and that the PVA/CNF/Fe₃O₄ hybrid hydrogel as catalysts were able to activate H₂O₂ to generate a large amount of oxygen radical •OH, resulting in efficient removal of tetracycline. The tetracycline degradation followed a proposed first-order kinetic model and achieved a removal rate of about 98% in 120 min at an optimum pH of 3, H₂O₂ 100 mM, catalyst 0.3 g/L, and a temperature of 25 °C.

Parameters affecting LED photoreactor efficiency in a heterogeneous photo-Fenton process using iron mining residue as catalyst

In this article, a light-emitting diode (LED)-based photoreactor was designed and evaluated for degradation of the antibiotic sulfathiazole (STZ), using heterogeneous photo-Fenton process with an iron ore residue as catalyst. The effects of the type of magnetic stirrer bar, use of baffles, rotation speed, and type and intensity of irradiation source were evaluated. The results showed that the degradation of STZ was strongly influenced by rotation speed (1100 rpm) and that the use of an octagonal stirrer bar favoured high dispersion and greater contact of the catalyst with the reaction medium. Although the presence of baffles had little influence on STZ degradation, their use enabled good dispersion of the catalyst (due to axial flow) and eliminated the vortex formed at high stirring speeds. It was found that the iron mining residue could be activated by UV LEDs, visible light LEDs, and black light irradiation, with similar degradation efficiencies achieved. Using the LEDs, STZ concentrations below the detection limit were obtained after 40 min, with power consumption 38-fold (UV LEDs) and 22-fold (visible light LEDs) lower than required for black light irradiation. The results demonstrated the advantages of the use of LED devices as irradiation systems in heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes.
