Preparation of lactic acid modified cellulose nanoparticles by microwave heating for preconcentration of copper from blood and food samples

Diaminated Cellulose Beads as a Sustainable Support for Industrially Relevant Lipases

Environmentally persistent polystyrene or polyacrylic beads are used as supports in enzyme large-scale bioprocesses, including conversion glucose isomerization for high-fructose corn syrup production, hydrolysis of lactose, and synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients. In this paper, we report the development of a novel sustainable and scalable method to produce diaminated cellulose beads (DAB) as highly efficient alternative supports for industrially relevant lipases. Regenerated cellulose beads were grafted with diaminated aliphatic hydrocarbons via periodate oxidation and reductive amination. The oxidation step indicated that aldehyde content can be easily tuned through the reaction time and concentration of reactants. Reductive amination of dialdehyde cellulose was more efficient as the length of the diaminated hydrocarbon compound increased. Morphological analysis of DAB showed that cellulose chemical grafting enabled the preservation of the bead shape and internal structure upon freeze-drying. Enzymatic degradability studies demonstrated that chemical functionalization did not undermine enzyme cellulose hydrolysis. The addition of aminated moieties on cellulose dramatically increased absorption efficiency for all industrially relevant lipases used, reaching 100% for Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase (TLL). Storage and recyclability experiments demonstrated that enzymes were retained and recyclable for at least nine cycles, although the activity gradually declined after each cycle. Medium chain triacylglycerol hydrolysis in a SpinChem reactor using TLL immobilized on 1,6 DAB exhibited higher activity compared to acrylic beads (588 vs 459 U/g) suggesting that biodegradable cellulose-based materials could be a valid and attractive alternative to plastics carriers.

Isothermal and Kinetic Investigation of Exploring the Potential of Citric Acid-Treated Trapa natans and Citrullus lanatus Peels for Biosorptive Removal of Brilliant Green Dye from Water

Trapa natans peels (TNPs) and Citrullus lanatus peels (CLPs) were utilized for the biosorptive removal of brilliant green dye (BGD), after modifying with citric acid. Characterization and surface morphology were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. For the removal of BGD by citric acid-treated Trapa natans peels (CA-TNPs), the optimum conditions were obtained with adsorbent dose 0.8 g, contact time 25 minutes, initial pH 5, temperature 30°C, and agitation speed 100 rpm, while for the citric acid-treated Citrullus lanatus peels (CA-CLPs), adsorbent dose 0.8 g, contact time 20 minutes, pH 5, temperature 30°C, and agitation speed 100 rpm gave optimum results. The qmax values obtained were 108.6, 128, 144.9, and 188.68 mg/g for R-TNP, CA-TNP, R-CLP, and CA-CLP, respectively, while the correlation coefficient (R2) values obtained were 0.985, 0.986, 0.985, and 0.998 for R-TNP, CA-TNP, R-CLP, and CA-CLP, respectively. These favor the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics, with negative (ΔG0) values of all adsorbents, determining that the adsorption phenomenon is exothermic and spontaneous in nature. Both citric acid-treated peels of Trapa natans and Citrullus lanatus were found suitable for bulk-scale eradication of hazardous, toxic, and carcinogenic basic cationic dyes.

Chemically modified rice husk as an effective adsorbent for removal of palladium ions

Bio-matrix of rice husk and Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 (MCM-41) was modified with alizarin red S for preconcentration of Pd²⁺ prior flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination. The prepared bio-matrix (RH@MCM-41@ARS) was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM/EDX) and surface area studies. The impact of different parameters (solution pH, amount of sorbent, contact time, sample volume, initial Pd²⁺ concentration and diverse ions) on the uptake of Pd²⁺ were evaluated. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pd²⁺ onto RH@MCM-41@ARS was 198.2 mg g^-1 at optimum conditions. Applying the optimized procedure as a preconcentration step led to limit of detection of 0.13 μg L^-1 and dynamic analytical range up to 500 μg L^-1. The sorbent was regenerated by 0.5 mol L^-1 thiourea for at least 10 cycles without significant reduction of adsorption capacity. The method was applied for preconcentration of Pd²⁺ from real samples.
