A review of 210Pb and 210Po in moss

Among environment contaminants, 210Pb and 210Po have gained significant research attention due to their radioactive toxicity. The occurrence of 40K and 137Cs radioactivity in mosses during 2015-2019 in the Djerdap National Park (E. Serbia)

The radiation status of the national park (NP) Djerdap (Eastern Serbia) is characterized using bioindicators (mosses). Mosses (16 species, 156 samples) were collected randomly within the area of NP Djerdap during the month of June, periodically from 2015 to 2019. Samples were collected in the regions of Dobra, Donji Milanovac, and Tekija. Within the mosses, the presence of ⁴⁰ K and ¹³⁷Cs is regarded as a good indicator of radionuclides present in the environment due to their easy interchangeability with ³⁹ K highly present in living moss organisms. The activity concentrations of gamma ray-emmiting radionuclides in samples were determined using high-resolution gamma ray spectrometry, an HPGe-ORTEC/Ametek detector. The determining activity concentrations of ⁴⁰ K and ¹³⁷Cs in collected samples were as follows: for ⁴⁰ K from 31.4 to 721 Bq kg^-1and for ¹³⁷Cs varied from 2.6 to 908 Bq kg^-1. The average activity concentrations of ⁴⁰ K and ¹³⁷Cs (Bq kg^-1) in mosses in the period 2015-2019 were the lowest in moss samples collected in the Dobra region, and the highest in the area of Donji Milanovac. The most prevalent collected moss species within the Djerdap National Park was Hypnum cupressiforme. The determined activity concentrations in H. cupressiforme of ¹³⁷Cs for the whole region of NP Djerdap for all 5 years was 78.1 ± 70.3 Bq kg^-1 and of ⁴⁰ K was 181 ± 86.1 Bq kg^-1.

Radium uptake by earthworms E. fetida after exposure to contaminated soil

Radium-226 is one of the most important radionuclides for assessing the radiation exposure in terrestrial ecosystems in terms of its significant contribution to the internal and total dose rates. A laboratory culture of Eisenia fetida was exposed to soil contaminated with ²²⁶Ra and ²³⁸U during two months. These nuclides entered the soil as a result of industrial radium production (Vodny, Komi Republic, Russia). The concentrations of ²²⁶Ra and ²³⁸U were 89000 ± 9000 and 2130 ± 270 Bq kg^-1 of soil. Bioaccumulation of ²²⁶Ra was investigated in E. fetida exposed to the radioactive soil or to a mixture containing the same radioactive soil diluted with peat and sand. The activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra in E. fetida were higher after exposure to the contaminated soil compared to the mixture. The literature data on the radium accumulation in earthworms were considered also. Our experiments showed that the concentration ratio (CR) of ²²⁶Ra in E. fetida varied from 5.5 × 10^-4 to 4.5 × 10^-3 Bq kg^-1 f.w./Bq kg^-1 d.w. The average CRs were (6.7 ± 1.7) × 10^-4 for the earthworms E. fetida from the soil mixture and (3.2 ± 1.2) × 10^-3 for those from the radioactive soil. These CRs for ²²⁶Ra were up to two orders of magnitude lower than the values calculated by us from the results obtained by other researchers for natural earthworm populations in areas with lower levels radioactivity.

Radiation exposure and risk assessment to earthworms in areas contaminated with naturally occurring radionuclides

The assessment of radiation exposure on biota is one of the main parts of environment protection system. Earthworms have been recognized as an important organism group in the terrestrial ecosystems. According to many researchers the potential risks of naturally occurring radionuclides for soil invertebrates were not significant because the exposure doses to the invertebrate populations were low. Our study aimed to assess the radiation exposure and the radiological risks from naturally occurring radionuclides for earthworm populations at four sites. This research was based on three dosimetric approaches simultaneously: ERICA and RESRAD-BIOTA-the commonly used ones, and also on the original method proposed by Thomas and Liber (Environment International, 27, 341-353, 2001) for aquatic organisms. To calculate radiation dose rates to soil invertebrates inhabiting background and contaminated areas, the specific activities of radionuclides in soil, and, depending on the model, the default, or determined in this study, input mass-geometric parameters had been applied. The weighted absorbed dose rates calculated by different models and site-specific data were 0.3-1.4 μGy/h for the background and from 3.4 to 170 μGy/h for the contaminated sites. Analysis of radiation risks for earthworms indicated that ²²⁶Ra was the key contributor to the external dose rate; ²²⁶Ra and ²¹⁰Po played a dominant role in formation of internal dose rate for radioecological situations in our study. More conservative radiation risk assessments were derived from RESRAD-BIOTA tool. Dose assessments obtained using various models had shown that there are real environmental situations in which the radiological risks to reference organisms are significantly higher than the lowest benchmark protection level proposed for ecosystems.

Mosses in the Kopački Rit Nature Park, Croatia, as bioindicators of a potential radioactive contamination of the middle Danube River basin

We studied activity concentrations of radionuclides in the Kopački Rit Nature Park using mosses as bioindicators. This area of intact nature is at the tripoint of Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia, being located basically at the centre of the middle Danube River basin. Therefore, it can be easily affected by airborne pollution from various locations in the Middle Europe and beyond. The goal of our research was to assess whether the Park could serve as a location where any new radioactive contamination could be sensitively detected, which implied a necessity for low activity concentrations at the present time. Our gamma-ray spectrometry revealed the presence of only one anthropogenic gamma emitter, that is, ¹³⁷Cs. Its activity concentration in the mosses ranged from 0.7 to 13.1 Bq kg⁻¹, being low indeed. Another radionuclide in our focus was ²¹⁰Pb. Generally, its elevated concentrations may signify ecologically undesirable human activities that involve naturally occurring radioactive matter. The activity concentration of ²¹⁰Pb in the mosses was in the range from 183 to 690 Bq kg⁻¹. This did not depart from the results of other similar studies and was again low enough for a detection of possible excess amounts of this radionuclide in the future.

Spatio-temporal monitoring of mercury and other stable metal(loid)s and radionuclides in a Croatian terrestrial ecosystem around a natural gas treatment plant

The natural gas industry bears a certain contamination risk to human and biota due to, among others, mercury, arsenic, and naturally occurring radioactive material content in gas. We tracked multiple stabile metal(loid)s and radionuclides within the natural gas treatment plant Molve, Croatia, ecosystem during the last decade through a comprehensive monitoring of soil, earthworms, moss, livestock (blood, milk, hair, urine, and feces from cows), and wildlife animals (brain, muscle, liver, and kidney of European hare and pheasant). The level of mercury and other stable metal(loid)s has shown temporal variation, but without an obvious trend. The found spatial differences in soil and earthworms were based on the differing soil characteristics of the sampled locations and exceeded the maximal allowable concentration of arsenic and zinc for agricultural soil. The status of essential copper, selenium, and zinc in cows, hares, and pheasants inclined towards deficiency. The measured stable metal(loid) levels in soil and animal samples were generally in the same range of values reported in earlier decades from the same area or non-polluted areas across Europe. The consumption of local cow and game products (e.g., milk, meat) can be considered safe for human health, although game offal is advised to be avoided as a food item due to the low risk of lead and cadmium's adverse effects. Although the activity concentrations of some radionuclides in moss were higher than reported for pristine areas, transfer from soil to moss was assessed as average (except for lead-210). Radiological risk to human and biota around the gas treatment plant Molve was estimated as negligible.

Radiological impact of an active quarry in the Papuk Nature Park, Croatia

Papuk Nature Park, unlike most similar parks and preserves in the world, contains active quarries. Quarries dig stone from the ground, creating dust and exposing deeper, potentially more radioactive layers. Since the forest trails in the Park lead right up to the quarries, we believed it was important to determine the radiological impact of the quarries on the Park environment. We measured ambient dose rate equivalent H*(10) and sampled moss at 26 Park locations along two of four quarries, along the road between them, and near Lake Orahovac, a very popular tourist destination close to the quarries. Moss is a standard bioindicator of exposure to heavy metals, including radionuclides. Using-gamma ray spectrometry we determined the activity concentration of ¹³⁷Cs and of representative naturally occurring radionuclides – ²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra, ²¹⁰Pb, ²³²Th, and ⁴⁰K – in sampled moss. H*(10) at selected locations was similar to the background H*(10) measured continuously all over Croatia. The ranges of measured activity concentrations of ¹³⁷Cs and naturally occurring radionuclides in moss did not differ significantly from other parts of Croatia and nearby countries.

Distribution and transfer of naturally occurring radionuclides and 137Cs in the freshwater system of the Plitvice Lakes, Croatia, and related dose assessment to wildlife by ERICA Tool

The aim of this study was to investigate the natural radioactivity of Plitvice Lakes, under the assumption that due to its status as a National Park, the area can be considered an example of a natural freshwater system. Also, considering the transfer parameter data as the largest source of uncertainty in radiological risk assessments, the impact of site-specific data on dose rate assessment, as opposed to currently available data, was investigated. The study included gamma and alpha spectrometric measurements of ²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra, ²¹⁰Pb, ²²⁸Ra, and ⁴⁰K in water, sediment, and fish samples, as well as ¹³⁷Cs due to the coinciding of the study with the Fukushima accident. The content of naturally occurring radionuclides significantly varied in sediments of different Lakes, probably as a reflection of the different underlying geology of the area. Also, the ²¹⁰Pb distribution in sediments indicated an up to 312 Bq kg^-1 of the allochthonous contribution of this radionuclide at the beginning of the Lake's watercourse, which probably entered into the lake system by the major inlet river with its steady decrease along downstream lakes. Low ⁴⁰K activity concentrations (27.5 ± 20.1 mBq L^-1) in the Lake's waters might be one of the causes of increased ¹³⁷Cs activity concentrations in fish samples (1.5 ± 0.4 Bq kg^-1), which was found to be an order of magnitude higher than average values for different fish species from other Croatian freshwater systems (0.2 ± 0.1 Bq kg^-1). A temporary increase of ¹³⁷Cs activity concentrations was measured in water samples collected immediately after the Fukushima accident. Calculated site-specific sediment/water distribution coefficients and fish/water concentration ratios for radium and caesium were on average lower than generic ones found in the literature. Background dose rate assessments performed by the ERICA Tool indicated a profound impact of different input data on assessment results with water activity concentrations resulting in significantly higher dose rates (0.1-67 μGy h^-1) in comparison to sediment activity concentrations (0.03-9 μGy h^-1). An incremental dose rate due to ¹³⁷Cs was found to be in the range of < 0.001-0.023 μGy h^-1 which, in comparison to background dose rates, can be considered negligible.

Radioactivity of soil in Croatia II: 137Cs, 40K, and absorbed dose rate

We took samples of uncultivated soil from the surface layer (0–10 cm) at 138 sites from all over Croatia and measured their radionuclide activity concentrations with high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. This second part of our report brings the results on ⁴⁰K and ¹³⁷Cs to complement those on the ²³²Th and ²³⁸U decay chains addressed in the first part. Together they give the most complete picture of radioactivity of Croatian soil so far. Activity concentrations of ⁴⁰K were the highest in the Pannonian region, and there was an opposite trend for ¹³⁷Cs. We found that the concentrations of ¹³⁷Cs tended to increase with altitude, annual precipitation, and vegetation density. The concentration ratio of ¹³⁷Cs and K in soil, which indicates the potential for ¹³⁷Cs entering food chains via uptake by plants, was the lowest in agriculturally important areas in the east of the Pannonian region. In addition, we used the obtained results on activity concentrations to calculate the related absorbed dose rate as a measure of external exposure to ionising radiation from soil. The sum of the absorbed dose rates for naturally occurring radionuclides and ¹³⁷Cs showed that external exposure was generally the highest in the Dinaric region and Istrian Peninsula.

Radioactivity of soil in Croatia I: naturally occurring decay chains

The assessment of environmental radioactivity much relies on radionuclide content in soil. This stems from the significant contribution of soil to both external and internal exposure to ionising radiation via direct emission of gamma radiation and soil-to-plant radionuclide transfer, respectively. This motivated us to carry out a systematic research on the radioactivity of soil in Croatia to obtain relevant data that can be used as a basis for understanding the related effects of geomorphological, biogeographical, and climatological properties of the environment. We collected samples of the surface layer of uncultivated soil (0–10 cm) at 138 sites from all over the country and measured them for radionuclide activity concentrations by means of high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry. This resulted in radioactivity maps containing data on activity concentrations of representative radionuclides in the environment. In this paper, which is the first in our two-part presentation, we focus on the naturally occurring ²³²Th and ²³⁸U decay chains and their correlations with the diversity of Croatian regions. For both of the chains, activity concentrations were the highest in the Dinaric region, the lowest in the Pannonian region, and intermediate in the Adriatic region. Relatively high concentrations of ²²⁶Ra in the soil of the Dinaric region implied a possibility of an enhanced emanation of its progeny ²²²Rn into the air. Activity concentrations of ²¹⁰Pb were additionally elevated in areas with dense vegetation, most probably due to an atmospheric deposition of airborne ²¹⁰Pb onto the surface of plants and their eventual decomposition on the ground.
