Photodegradation of gaseous toluene and disinfection of airborne microorganisms from polluted air using immobilized TiO2 nanoparticle photocatalyst-based filter

Bacterial composition of refrigerators in households and inactivation of airborne Staphylococcus aureus using a TiO2-UVLED module in a 512 L aerobiology chamber

This study aimed to investigate the microbiota in the air and on the surface of a refrigerator and to inactivate aerosolized Staphylococcus aureus using a TiO₂-UVLED module. A total of 100 L of the air and 5000 cm² surfaces in seven household refrigerators were collected using an air sampler and a swab, respectively. Samples were subjected to microbiota analysis as well as quantitative analyses of aerobic or anaerobic bacteria. The level of airborne aerobic bacteria was 4.26 log CFU/vol (100 L), while that of surface aerobic bacteria was 5.27 log CFU/surface (5000 cm²). PCoA based on the Bray-Curtis metric revealed that the bacterial composition differed between samples collected from refrigerators with and without a vegetable drawer. Moreover, pathogenic bacteria containing genera and order from each sample were found, such as Enterobacaterales, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Listeria, and Bacillus. Among them, Staphylococcus aureus was determined to be a core hazardous pathogen in air. Therefore, three S. aureus strains isolated from the air in refrigerators, as well as a reference strain of S. aureus (ATCC 6538P), were inactivated by a TiO₂-UVLED module in a 512 L aerobiology chamber. All aerosolized S. aureus were reduced over 1.6 log CFU/vol after treatment with TiO₂ under UVA (365 nm) light at 40 J/cm². These findings suggest that TiO₂-UVLED modules have the potential to be used to control airborne bacteria in household refrigerators.

Photocatalytic Oxidation for Volatile Organic Compounds Elimination: From Fundamental Research to Practical Applications

Photocatalysis is regarded as one of the most promising technologies for indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) elimination due to its low cost, safe operation, energy efficiency, and high mineralization efficiency under ambient conditions. However, the practical applications of this technology are limited, despite considerable research efforts in recent decades. Until now, most of the works were carried out in the laboratory and focused on exploring new catalytic materials. Only a few works involved the immobilization of catalysts and the design of reactors for practical applications. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the research and development on photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of VOCs, with emphasis on recent catalyst's immobilization and reactor designs in detail. First, different types of photocatalytic materials and the mechanisms for PCO of VOCs are briefly discussed. Then, both the catalyst's immobilization techniques and reactor designs are reviewed in detail. Finally, the existing challenges and future perspectives for PCO of VOCs are proposed. This work aims to provide updated information and research inspirations for the commercialization of this technology in the future.

Nano-Ag: Environmental applications and perspectives

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are promising bactericidal agents and plasmonic NPs for environmental applications, owing to their various favorable properties. For example, AgNPs enables reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and specific reaction selectivities. In fact, AgNPs-based materials and their antimicrobial, optical, and electrical effects are at the forefront of nanotechnology, having applications in environmental disinfection, elimination of environmental pollutants, environmental detection, and energy conversions. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the advanced applications and fundamental mechanisms to provide the guidelines for future work in the field of AgNPs implanted functional materials. The state-of-art terms including (photo)(electro)catalytic reactions, heterojunction formation, the generation and attacking of ROS, genetic damage, hot electron generation and transfer, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), plasmon resonance energy transfer (PERT), near field electromagnetic enhancement, structure-function relationship, and reaction selectivities have been covered in this review. It is expected that this review may provide insights into the rational development in the next generation of AgNPs-based nanomaterials with excellent performances.

Dust and microbial filtration performance of regular and antimicrobial HVAC filters in realistic conditions

Two polypropylene HVAC electret filters: a regular filter and an antimicrobial filter containing zinc pyrithione (ZPT), were compared for filtration performance. The study was conducted over 7 months in realistic conditions with semi-urban outdoor air. Several parameters were monitored over the study period: the average temperature was about 20 °C and relative humidity about 60%, the average inlet concentration of cultivable microorganisms was 50 CFU m^-3, the average inlet concentration of particles was 10 μg m^-3, the filter pressure drop increased moderately by about 30 Pa, and the particle collection efficiency of soda fluorescein (median diameter 0.35 μm) decreased in the first half of the study period by about 30% and then stabilized. The microbial concentration on the filters was quantified every 2 months using an innovative methodology based on media coupons in conjunction with microorganism quantification by CFU counting, with 5 culture media favorable to bacteria and/or fungi growth. The microbial concentrations on the filters were between 100 and 2000 CFU cm^-2. The antimicrobial effect of zinc pyrithione was confirmed by the fungi cultivated with DRBC agar: no effects in the level of filter clogging were revealed in the range studied. The high statistical deviation in the results regarding the inhibiting effect of zinc pyrithione on bacteria prevents any conclusion.
