Dual role of dissolved black carbon in sensitized ofloxacin photooxidation: Mechanism and influential factors

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is the more photoactive component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool, which plays a dual role in the photoconversion of aquatic contaminants, acting as both a photosensitizer and an inhibitor. However, little is known about the more systematic mechanism by which DBC exhibits a dual effect, which is closely related to the structure composition of DBC. In this study, the differences in characteristics of DBC obtained from 300 °C and 500 °C were compared via UV-vis absorption spectrum, Fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectra (3D-EEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and evaluated the promoting and inhibiting effects of DBC on ofloxacin (OFL) photodegradation. It was found that higher pyrolysis temperature reduced the UV absorbance, molecular weight, aromaticity, and phenolics of DBC while increasing the content of quinone/aromatic ketone and humic substances. Photochemical data showed that 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH were all participated in the DBC-mediated OFL photodegradation. Wherein, DBC300 (DBCT, where T = pyrolysis temperature) had strong light screening and dynamic quenching effect, but the formation ability of 3DBC*, 1O2 and ·OH was poor, which significantly retarded the photodegradation of OFL. While DBC500 exhibited a slight promotion effect due to its higher formation ability of reactive species and weak light screening effect. Moreover, DBC500 had higher steady-state concentration and (kOFL,3DBC⁎) than DBC300, which might be due to the higher contents of quinone/aromatic ketone and the lower contents of phenol in DBC500, thus enhancing the reactivity of 3DBC* and OFL. Our research systematically revealed the trade-off mechanism of DBC on the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones, and provided an important theoretical guidance for the photodegradation of fluoroquinolones under the evolution of DBC composition.

Role of Seasons in the Fate of Dissolved Organic Carbon and Nutrients in a Large-Scale Surface Flow Constructed Wetland

The role of seasons in the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nutrients and in changes in the spectral properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a large-scale surface flow constructed wetland (SF-CW) receiving reclaimed water and composed of three basins with different vegetation patterns was studied. Dissolved nitrogen removal efficiencies within the three basins in summer (>50%) and winter (<30%) were significantly different. SF-CW water is enriched in DOC in spring and summer with average outlet concentrations above 8 mg·L−1. UV-visible indices, such as the specific absorbance at 254 nm or the spectral slope between 275 and 295 nm, did not vary over the seasons; thus, the basins did not change DOM aromaticity and average molecular weight. Synchronous fluorescence spectra showed variations in terms of protein-like and humic-like substances, the latter being more sensitive to photodegradation. A lab-scale photodegradation experiment confirmed that radiation from the sun was responsible for this decrease, showing this process could alter the composition of DOM at full-scale. DOM variations result from a seasonal competition between release by vegetation and photodegradation. These results validate the necessity for long-term monitoring of SF-CWs, and the utility of rapid optical methods to monitor DOC.

Effect of UVC pre-irradiation on the Suwannee river Natural Organic Matter (SRNOM) photooxidant properties

The present study aimed to investigate the changes in the chemical composition, and in the optical and photooxidant properties of Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter (SRNOM) induced by UVC (254 nm) treatment. The extent of the photodegradation was first assessed by UV-visible/fluorescence spectroscopies and organic carbon analysis. An in-depth investigation of the chemical changes was also conducted using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after derivatizations. A series of mono, di and tricarbonyls and mono and dicarboxylic acids in C₁C₆ were identified in samples irradiated from 1 to 4 h. After 3 h of irradiation, carbonyls accounted for 46% of the organic carbon remaining in solution whereas carboxylic acids represented about 2%. Then, we investigated the modifications of the photooxidant properties of SRNOM induced by these chemical changes. At 254 nm, UVC pre-irradiated SRNOM photodegraded glyphosate 29 times faster than original SRNOM and the reaction was fully inhibited by 2-propanol (5 × 10^-3 M). This enhanced photooxidant properties at 254 nm toward glyphosate was therefore reasonably due to •OH radicals formation, as confirmed by additional ESR measurements. A mechanism involving a chain reaction was proposed based on independent experiments conducted on carbonyl compounds, particularly pyruvic acid and acetone. The findings of this study show that UVC pre-treatment of NOM can enhance the removal of water pollutants and suggests a possible integration of a NOM pre-activation step in engineered water treatment sytems.

Singlet Oxygen Quantum Yields in Environmental Waters

Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) is a reactive oxygen species produced in sunlit waters via energy transfer from the triplet states of natural sensitizers. There has been an increasing interest in measuring apparent ¹O₂ quantum yields (Φ_Δ) of aquatic and atmospheric organic matter samples, driven in part by the fact that this parameter can be used for environmental fate modeling of organic contaminants and to advance our understanding of dissolved organic matter photophysics. However, the lack of reproducibility across research groups and publications remains a challenge that significantly limits the usability of literature data. In the first part of this review, we critically evaluate the experimental techniques that have been used to determine Φ_Δ values of natural organic matter, we identify and quantify sources of errors that potentially explain the large variability in the literature, and we provide general experimental recommendations for future studies. In the second part, we provide a qualitative overview of known Φ_Δ trends as a function of organic matter type, isolation and extraction procedures, bulk water chemistry parameters, molecular and spectroscopic organic matter features, chemical treatments, wavelength, season, and location. This review is supplemented with a comprehensive database of Φ_Δ values of environmental samples.
