Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals to aquatic organisms in the Lhasa River, Tibet, China

Composition, distribution, and risk assessment of heavy metals in large-scale river water on the Tibetan Plateau

Heavy metals present in aquatic ecosystems constitute a significant threat to both the environment and human health. In this study, we analyzed various heavy metals (As, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, Cd, Pb and Sb) using extensive surface water samples collected from the Tibetan Plateau in 2021 and 2023. Results showed that downstream water samples exhibited higher content (mean 12.6 μg/L) of heavy metals compared to those from the glacier basins. It is noteworthy that heavy metal content varied significantly both in the glacier basin and downstream (4.6-29.1 μg/L and 7.8-55.2 μg/L, respectively). However, elevated concentrations at certain sites (e.g., Saga County and Dangque Zangbu River) were primarily attributed to the disproportionate contribution of individual heavy metals, possibly stemming from specific human activities or natural conditions. In the glacier basin, only Cr exhibited a decreasing trend in enrich factors (EF) with increasing Sc concentration, whereas, in the downstream areas, most elements displayed a declining trend. Furthermore, apart from a few sampling sites, heavy metal concentrations in the glacier basin remained relatively balanced, suggesting that these metals predominantly originate from natural sources. The values of potential ecological risk for an individual element (Eri) and potential ecological risk index (PER) indicate that the ecological and human risks associated with almost heavy metals (except As) in the aquatic ecosystem are minimal. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Heavy metals in aquatic ecosystems pose a significant threat to ecological and human health. Due to delicate ecological balance of the Tibetan Plateau and its critical role as a water resource, we analyzed various heavy metals (As, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, Cd, Pb and Sb) concentrations and EF in land surface river water, to find out the pollution levels and possible sources of heavy metals in the aquatic ecosystems. The results of risk assessment showed that the prevention and management of arsenic in Tibetan Plateau needs attention, but most heavy metals pose no threaten to ecological and human health.

A retrospective analysis of heavy metals and multi elements in the Yangtze River Basin: Distribution characteristics, migration tendencies and ecological risk assessment

The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world with more than 6300 km, covering 0.4 billion people. However, the aquatic ecosystem of the Yangtze River has been seriously damaged in the past decades due to a rapid development of economic and industrialization along the coast. In this study, we first established a dataset of fifty elements, including nine common heavy metals (HMs) and forty-one other elements, in the Yangtze River Basin through the collection of historical data from 2000 to 2020, and then analyzed their spatiotemporal distribution characteristics. The results indicated that the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), a region formed by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), may act as a sink for these elements from upstream regions. The concentrations of seven elements in surface water and 13 elements in sediment obviously increased from the upstream region of the TGR to the TGR. In addition, ten elements in the surface water and 5 elements in the sediments clearly decreased, possibly because of the interception effects of the TGD. On a timescale, Cr obviously tended to migrate from the water phase to the sediment; Pb tended to migrate from the sediment to the water phase. In the ecological risk assessment, all common HMs in surface water were supposed to have negligible risks as protecting 90 % of aquatic organisms; Cd (210.2), Hg (58.0) and As (43.1) in sediment posed high and moderate ecological risks using the methodology of the potential ecological risk index. Furthermore, Hunan Province is at considerable risk according to the sum of the potential risk index (314.8) due to Cd pollution (66.8 %). These fundamental data and results will support follow-up control strategies for elements and policies related to aquatic ecosystem protection in the Yangtze River Basin.

Viromics Reveals the High Diversity of Viruses from Fishes of the Tibet Highland

Aquaculture is important for food security and nutrition. The economy has recently been significantly threatened and the risk of zoonoses significantly increased by aquatic diseases, and the ongoing introduction of new aquatic pathogens, particularly viruses, continues to represent a hazard. Yet, our knowledge of the diversity and abundance of fish viruses is still limited. Here, we conducted a metagenomic survey of different species of healthy fishes caught in the Lhasa River, Tibet, China, and sampled intestinal contents, gills, and tissues. To be more precise, by identifying and analyzing viral genomes, we aim to determine the abundance, diversity, and evolutionary relationships of viruses in fish with other potential hosts. Our analysis identified 28 potentially novel viruses, 22 of which may be associated with vertebrates, across seven viral families. During our research, we found several new strains of viruses in fish, including papillomavirus, hepadnavirus, and hepevirus. Additionally, we discovered two viral families, Circoviridae and Parvoviridae, which were prevalent and closely related to viruses that infect mammals. These findings further expand our understanding of highland fish viruses and highlight the emerging view that fish harbor large, unknown viruses. IMPORTANCE The economy and zoonoses have recently been significantly threatened by aquatic diseases. Yet, our knowledge of the diversity and abundance of fish viruses is still limited. We identified the wide genetic diversity of viruses that these fish were harboring. Since there are currently few studies on the virome of fish living in the Tibet highland, our research adds to the body of knowledge. This discovery lays the groundwork for future studies on the virome of fish species and other highland animals, preserving the ecological equilibrium on the plateau.

Soil heavy metal(loid) pollution and health risk assessment of farmlands developed on two different terrains on the Tibetan Plateau, China

The quality of farmland soils on the Tibetan Plateau is important because of the region's ecological vulnerability and their close link with local food security. Investigation on the pollution status of heavy metal (loid)s (HMs) in the farmlands of Lhasa and Nyingchi on the Tibetan Plateau, China revealed that Cu, As, Cd, Tl, and Pb were apparently enriched, with the soil parent materials being the primary sources of the soil HMs. Overall, the farmlands in Lhasa had higher contents of HMs compared to those in the farmlands of Nyingchi, which could be attributed to the fact that the former were mainly developed on river terraces while the latter were mainly developed on the alluvial fans in mountainous areas. As displayed the most apparent enrichment, with the average concentrations in the vegetable field soils and grain field soils of Lhasa being 2.5 and 2.2 times higher compared to those of Nyingchi. The soils of vegetable fields were more heavily polluted than those of grain fields, probably due to the more intensive input of agrochemicals, particularly the use of commercial organic fertilizers. The overall ecological risk of the HMs in the Tibetan farmlands was low, while Cd posed medium ecological risk. Results of health risk assessment show that ingestion of the vegetable field soils could pose elevated health risk, with children facing greater risk than adults. Among all the HMs targeted, Cd had relatively high bioavailability of up to 36.2% and 24.9% in the vegetable field soils of Lhasa and Nyingchi, respectively. Cd also showed the most significant ecological and human health risk. Thus, attention should be paid to minimize further anthropogenic input of Cd to the farmland soils on the Tibetan Plateau.

Seasonal variations in CDOM characteristics and effects of environmental factors in coastal rivers, Northeast China

Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is highly spatiotemporally varied due to the effects of complex environmental factors within a catchment or system. The seasonal nutritional status and potential risks of heavy metals in the coastal rivers of the Liaohe River basin were evaluated based on 40 water samples in January, April, May, and September. Meanwhile, the effects of environmental factors on CDOM, especially human activities, were quantitatively analyzed. The trophic state index (TSI) and the potential ecological risk index (RI) of heavy metals in the Liaohe River basin exhibited significant differences. The rivers were mesotrophic in January, lightly eutrophic in May, and highly eutrophic in April and September. An extremely high RI was shown in April and May, while a high RI was exhibited in September. CDOM exhibited great seasonal characteristics and showed significant seasonal correlations with environmental factors. Based on multiple general linear model analysis, total phosphorus (TP) was the most influential factor and significantly explained 62.1% of a_CDOM(440) (p < 0.01) among the water parameters, followed by total alkalinity (38.3%). The percentages of built-up area exerted significantly positive effects on a_CDOM(440) (R² = 0.44), while distance from oil extraction sites significantly negatively affected a_CDOM(440) (r = - 0.328, p < 0.05). Polluting enterprises showed non-significant correlation with CDOM (r = 0.314, p = 0.178).

Symbiotic Microorganisms and Their Different Association Types in Aquatic and Semiaquatic Bugs

True bugs (Hemiptera, suborder Heteroptera) constitute the largest suborder of nonholometabolous insects and occupy a wide range of habitats various from terrestrial to semiaquatic to aquatic niches. The transition and occupation of these diverse habitats impose various challenges to true bugs, including access to oxygen for the aquatic species and plant defense for the terrestrial phytophagans. Although numerous studies have demonstrated that microorganisms can provide multiple benefits to terrestrial host insects, a systematic study with comprehensive higher taxa sampling that represents aquatic and semiaquatic habitats is still lacking. To explore the role of symbiotic microorganisms in true bug adaptations, 204 samples belonging to all seven infraorders of Heteroptera were investigated, representing approximately 85% of its superfamilies and almost all known habitats. The symbiotic microbial communities of these insects were analyzed based on the full-length amplicons of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal ITS region. Bacterial communities varied among hosts inhabiting terrestrial, semiaquatic, and aquatic habitats, while fungal communities were more related to the geographical distribution of the hosts. Interestingly, co-occurrence networks showed that species inhabiting similar habitats shared symbiotic microorganism association types. Moreover, functional prediction analyses showed that the symbiotic bacterial community of aquatic species displayed richer amino acid and lipid metabolism pathways, while plant-feeding true bugs benefited more from the symbiont-provided xenobiotics biodegradation pathway. These results deepened the recognition that symbiotic microorganisms were likely to help heteropterans occupy diverse ecological habitats and provided a reference framework for further studies on how microorganisms affect host insects living in various habitats. IMPORTANCE Symbiotic bacteria and fungi generally colonize insects and provide various benefits for hosts. Although numerous studies have investigated symbionts in terrestrial plant-feeding insects, explorations of symbiotic bacterial and fungal communities in aquatic and semiaquatic insects are rare. In this study, the symbiotic microorganisms of 204 aquatic, semiaquatic, and terrestrial true bugs were explored. This comprehensive taxon sampling covers ~85% of the superfamilies of true bugs and most insect habitats. Analyses of the diversity of symbionts demonstrated that the symbiotic microbial diversities of true bugs were mainly affected by host habitats. Co-occurrence networks showed that true bugs inhabiting similar habitats shared symbiotic microbial association types. These correlations between symbionts and hosts together with the functions of bacterial communities indicated that symbiotic microbial communities may help true bugs adapt to (semi)aquatic habitats.
