Facile synthesis of chitosan-modified ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposites for effective remediation of groundwater fluoride

Ultrasonic irradiation-assisted MnFe2O4 nanoparticles catalyzed solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde at room temperature

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) play a vital role in heterogeneous catalysis because of their easy separation, and effective recyclability. Herein, we report the synthesis of MnFe2O4 NPs for use as catalysts in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde under mild conditions. The MnFe2O4 NPs have been synthesized by precipitation method followed by hydrothermal ageing at 180 °C for 4.0 h. We have investigated the effect of chitosan and carboxymethyl cellulose on the size or morphology of the formed MnFe2O4 NPs. The X-ray diffraction study confirms the formation of pure and crystalline MnFe2O4 with varying average crystallite sizes ranging from 18 to 28 nm based on the type of additive used. The electron microscopy study reveals that the additive plays a significant role in controlling the morphology of the formed MnFe2O4 NPs. These MnFe2O4 NPs exhibit superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature and can effectively catalyze the solvent-free selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide at room temperature under ultrasonic irradiation. The developed protocol can be extended to various substituted benzyl alcohols having both the electron withdrawing and electron donating groups to afford moderate to excellent yield of the products. The catalyst is magnetically retrievable, highly stable, and can be reused up to the sixth run without significant loss of catalytic activity.

Preparation of aluminium-hydroxide-modified diatomite and its fluoride adsorption mechanism

As the current excessive accumulation of fluoride (F^-) in the environment can be hazardous to human health, it is essential to remove fluoride from wastewater. In this study, diatomite (DA) was used as a raw material and modified using aluminum hydroxide (Al-DA) for use in the adsorption of F^- from water bodies. SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and Zeta potential characterization analyses were carried out; adsorption tests and kinetic fitting were performed, and the effects of pH, dosing quantity, and presence of interfering ions on the adsorption of F^- by the materials were investigated. The results show that the Freundlich model effectively describes the adsorption process of F^- on DA, which therefore involves adsorption-complexation interactions; however, the Langmuir model effectively describes the adsorption process of F^- on Al-DA, corresponding to unimolecular layer adsorption mainly via ion-exchange interactions, that is, adsorption is dominated by chemisorption. Aluminum hydroxide was shown to be the main species involved in F^- adsorption. The efficiency of F^- removal by DA and Al-DA was over 91% and 97% for 2 h, and the adsorption kinetics were effectively fit by the quasi-secondary model, suggesting that chemical interactions between the absorbents and F^- control the adsorption process. The adsorption of F^- was highly dependent on the pH of the system, and the maximum adsorption performance was obtained at pH 6 and 4. The optimal dosage of DA and Al-DA was 4 g/L. Even in the presence of interfering ions, the removal of F^- on Al-DA reached 89%, showing good selectivity. XRD and FTIR studies showed that the mechanism of F^- adsorption on Al-DA involved ion exchange and the formation of F-Al bonds.

Rapid and enhanced adsorptive mitigation of groundwater fluoride by Mg(OH)2 nanoflakes

Fluoride is one of the most abundant anions in groundwater, posing a significant threat to the safe drinking water supply worldwide. Fluoride contamination in drinking water at levels greater than 1.5 mg L^-1 causes a variety of serious health problems. To address this problem, the current study deals with the synthesis of Mg(OH)₂ nanoflakes by a facile and simple hydrothermal method in the absence of any added template. The sizes of these nanoflakes are in the range of 90 to 200 nm. These nanoflakes are pure and crystalline, possessing hexagonal phase structures. The surface areas of Mg(OH)₂ nanoflakes are varying from 75.8 to 108.1 m² g^-1. These Mg(OH)₂ nanoflakes exhibit excellent adsorption performance for fluoride over a pH range of 2.0 to 9.0 with a maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of 3129 mg g^-1 at pH 7.0 at 313 K which is the highest for such kind of adsorbent reported so far. The adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic which primarily follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorbent is effective in the presence of co-existing anions and is reusable up to the fifth cycle with a minimal loss of adsorption performance. The nanoflakes can effectively remove highly concentrated groundwater fluoride to a permissible limit within a short time which increases the versatility of using these nanoflakes for practical applications.

Applications of biomass-based materials to remove fluoride from wastewater: A review

Fluoride is one of the essential trace elements for the human body, but excessive fluoride will cause serious environmental and health problems. This paper summarizes researches on the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions using newly developed or improved biomass materials and biomass-like organic materials in recent years. These biomass materials are classified into chitosan, microorganisms, lignocellulose plant materials, animal attribute materials, biological carbonized materials and biomass-like organic materials, which are explained and analyzed. By comparing adsorption performance and mechanism of adsorbents for removing fluoride, it is found that carbonizing materials and modifying adsorbents with metal ions are more beneficial to improving adsorption efficiency and the adsorption mechanisms are various. The adsorption capacities are still considerable after regeneration. This paper not only reviews the properties of these materials for fluoride removal, but also focuses on the comparison of materials performance and fluoride removal mechanism. Herein, by discussing the improved adsorption performance and research technology development of biomass materials and biomass-like organic materials, various innovative ideas are provided for adsorbing and removing contaminants.

Adsorptive removal of fluoride using ionic liquid-functionalized chitosan - Equilibrium and mechanism studies

In this study, novel biosorbents, based on chitosan and imidazolium ionic liquid, were prepared for the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM-EDS and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption. To investigate the adsorption mechanism and behavior of chitosan adsorbents, batch experiments were conducted under different adsorbent dosages (2, 4, 10 g/L), pH (4, 7, 9) and initial concentration (0.5-25.0 mg/L). The influence of the method of synthesis of ionic liquid on the adsorption performance were also studied. Experimental data were evaluated by Freundlich, Langmuir and Sips models. The introduction of ionic liquid significantly improved the uptake of fluoride compared to pure chitosan. The adsorption was influenced by the experimental conditions, as well as the method of ionic liquid synthesis. The highest fluoride removal was observed at pH 4 and found to decrease with increasing pH. The removal efficiency and adsorption capacity values indicated that the dose of 4 g/L was the optimum adsorbent dosage. The equilibrium data fitted best with the Sips isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 8.068 mg/g for modified chitosan beads. The mechanism of fluoride adsorption onto ionic liquid-modified chitosan involves electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and ion pair interaction.

In-situ, Ex-situ, and nano-remediation strategies to treat polluted soil, water, and air - A review

Nanotechnology, as an emerging science, has taken over all fields of life including industries, health and medicine, environmental issues, agriculture, biotechnology etc. The use of nanostructure molecules has revolutionized all sectors. Environmental pollution is a great concern now a days, in all industrial and developing as well as some developed countries. A number of remedies are in practice to overcome this problem. The application of nanotechnology in the bioremediation of environmental pollutants is a step towards revolution. The use of various types of nanoparticles (TiO₂ based NPs, dendrimers, Fe based NPs, Silica and carbon nanomaterials, Graphene based NPs, nanotubes, polymers, micelles, nanomembranes etc.) is in practice to diminish environmental hazards. For this many In-situ (bioventing, bioslurping, biosparging, phytoremediation, permeable reactive barrier etc.) and Ex-situ (biopile, windrows, bioreactors, land farming etc.) methodologies are employed. Improved properties like nanoscale size, less time utilization, high adaptability for In-situ and Ex-situ use, undeniable degree of surface-region to-volume proportion for possible reactivity, and protection from ecological elements make nanoparticles ideal for natural applications. There are distinctive nanomaterials and nanotools accessible to treat the pollutants. Each of these methods and nanotools depends on the properties of foreign substances and the pollution site. The current designed review highlights the techniques used for bioremediation of environmental pollutants as well as use of various nanoparticles along with proposed In-situ and Ex-situ bioremediation techniques.

Fabrication of eco-friendly chitosan functionalized few-layered WS2 nanocomposite implanted with ruthenium nanoparticles for in vitro antibacterial and anticancer activity: Synthesis, characterization, and pharmaceutical applications

The abundance of two-dimensional (2D) components has provided them with a broad material platform for building nano and atomic-level applications. So, 2D nanomaterials are unique because of their physicochemical properties. Over many years, graphene is a conventional 2D layered element that has significant attention in the scientific community. In recent years numerous new 2D nanomaterials other than graphene have been reported. The study of 2D nanomaterials is also in its infant stages, with the majority of research focusing on the explanation of special material properties, but very few articles are focusing on the biological applications of 2D nanomaterials. As a result, we focused on the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS₂ and WS₂, which were emerging and exciting groups of elements with display great opportunities in several fields, such as cancer nanomedicine. Herein, we synthesized biologically active CS/WS₂/Ru composite by liquid exfoliation approach. The CS/WS₂/Ru composites exhibit significant antibacterial action towards (S. aureus, and E. coli) bacteria. Also, the composite suggests synergetic anticancer action against MCF-7 cancer cells. These reports are possible to explore the innovative aspects of biological outcomes in carcinological applications.

Evaluation of fluoride adsorption in solution by synthetic Al2 O3 /CeO2 : A fixed-bed column study

A highly efficient fluoride adsorbent Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ was synthesized in this work and used it to fluoride removal in the fixed-bed adsorption through changing the different experimental conditions (influent F^- concentration, flow velocity, and bed heights). The adsorption capacity was 9.72 mg/g. In addition, the Adams-Bohart and Thomas models were used to fit and evaluate the column breakthrough curve of fluoride removal process by Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ , and the correlation coefficients (R² ) of the Thomas model were close to 1 under all experimental conditions. The structure of Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ and the adsorption mechanism were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N₂ adsorption and desorption isotherm, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, the adsorption of fluoride (F^- ) was mainly through metal binding (MF) and hydroxyl binding (AlOH⋯F) on the surface of the Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ . Furthermore, the regeneration and coexisting anions studies of Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ were carried out, and the efficiency of adsorption was still above 70% after five cycles. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Removal of fluoride was studied by fixed-bed experiment, and the adsorption capacity of composite Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ was 9.72 mg/g. The metal complex played important role in fluoride removal and reusability makes a long-term application for fluoride adsorption. Fluoride wastewater is pumped to the fixed-bed column, and fluoride ions are absorbed by Al₂ O₃ /CeO₂ through fluoride metal complex and aluminum hydrofluoride.

Removal of fluoride from industrial wastewater by using different adsorbents: A review

Many industries such as iron and steel metallurgy, copper and zinc smelting, the battery industry, and cement manufacturing industries discharge high concentrations of fluoride-containing wastewater into the environment. Subsequently, the discharge of high fluoride effluent serves as a threat to human life as well as the ecological ability to sustain life. This article analyses the advantages and drawbacks of some fluoride remediation technologies such as precipitation and flocculation, membrane technology, ion exchange technology, and adsorption technology. Among them, adsorption technology is considered the obvious choice and the best applicable technology. As such, several adsorbents with high fluoride adsorption capacity such as modified alumina, metal oxides, biomass, carbon-based materials, metal-organic frameworks, and other adsorption materials including their characteristics have been comprehensively summarized. Additionally, different adsorption conditions of the various adsorbents, such as pH, temperature, initial fluoride concentration, and contact time have been discussed in detail. The study found out that the composite synergy between different materials, morphological and structural control, and the strengthening of their functional groups can effectively improve the ability of the adsorbents for removing fluoride. This study has prospected the direction of various adsorbents for removing fluoride in wastewater, which would serve as guiding significance for future research in the field.
