Adsorption of dichromate ions from aqueous solution onto magnetic graphene oxide modified by β-cyclodextrin

Selective removal of thallium from water by MnO2-doped magnetic beads: Performance and mechanism study

Aqueous thallium has posed an increasing threat to environment as human's intensified activities in mining, refining, process and discharge. Remediation on thallium pollution has been of up-most importance to water treatment. In present work, MnO2 and magnetic Fe3O4 have been implanted to sodium alginate (SA) in presence of carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC), and the resultant beads consisted of SA/CMC/MnO2/Fe3O4 were characterized. The materials were applied to treatment of Tl-contaminated water as adsorbent in lab. The removal results revealed that the adsorption capacity reached 38.8 mg (Tl)·g (beads)-1 and almost 100 % removal efficiency was achieved. The residual Tl was below 0.1 μg·L-1, meeting the discharge standard regulated in China. The kinetic adsorption was better described as a pseudo-second-order and three-step intra-particle diffusion model. Freundlich isotherm was well fitted the experimental data. The absorbent shown an excellent competitive specificity (KTl/M: ∼104!) over common hazardous ions Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+, as well as naturally abundant K+ and Na+ (KTl/M: 10-102) in mimic environmental conditions. Regeneration and reusability of the absorbent was also verified by five absorption-desorpotion cycles. XPS results revealed that a redox reaction between Mn4+ with Tl+, and an ion exchange of H+ (-O-Fe) and Tl+ were assumed to be main process for the specific capturing. This study provided an efficient SA/CMC/MnO2/Fe3O4 composite beads that could be a promising adsorbent for Tl-polluted water treatment.

Efficient Adsorption Capacity of MgFe-Layered Double Hydroxide Loaded on Pomelo Peel Biochar for Cd (II) from Aqueous Solutions: Adsorption Behaviour and Mechanism

A novel pomelo peel biochar/MgFe-layered double hydroxide composite (PPBC/MgFe-LDH) was synthesised using a facile coprecipitation approach and applied to remove cadmium ions (Cd (II)). The adsorption isotherm demonstrated that the Cd (II) adsorption by the PPBC/MgFe-LDH composite fit the Langmuir model well, and the adsorption behaviour was a monolayer chemisorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd (II) was determined to be 448.961 (±12.3) mg·g^-1 from the Langmuir model, which was close to the actual experimental adsorption capacity 448.302 (±1.41) mg·g^-1. The results also demonstrated that the chemical adsorption controlled the rate of reaction in the Cd (II) adsorption process of PPBC/MgFe-LDH. Piecewise fitting of the intra-particle diffusion model revealed multi-linearity during the adsorption process. Through associative characterization analysis, the adsorption mechanism of Cd (II) of PPBC/MgFe-LDH involved (i) hydroxide formation or carbonate precipitation; (ii) an isomorphic substitution of Fe (III) by Cd (II); (iii) surface complexation of Cd (II) by functional groups (-OH); and (iv) electrostatic attraction. The PPBC/MgFe-LDH composite demonstrated great potential for removing Cd (II) from wastewater, with the advantages of facile synthesis and excellent adsorption capacity.

Multifunctional pH-responsive carbon-based hydrogel adsorbent for ultrahigh capture of anionic and cationic dyes in wastewater

An environmental friendly hydrogel adsorbent (DEC@GEL) was successfully manufactured by a facile free-radical polymerization method. Multiple characterizations demonstrated that the adsorbent was rich in functional groups and porous structures. The batch and multisystem adsorption experiments were applied to systematically investigate the adsorption properties of methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), indigo sodium dimethyl sulfonate (IC) and tartrazine (TR) in wastewater. The experimental results proved that the kinetic and isotherms of four dyes were more consistent with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model, respectively. Notably, the maximum adsorption capacities of MB, MG, TR and IC at 318 K were 2186.85, 2302.53, 1766.13 and 2301.75 mg/g, respectively, which were higher than many adsorbents that had been reported. Recycle experiment demonstrated the high reusability of the DEC@GEL. The selectivity and adsorption column experiments proved that DEC@GEL was not only widely applicable to various dyes, but also provided a positive start for the industrial application. Moreover, the simulated adsorption experiments further demonstrate that DEC@GEL had the prospect of application in real industrial conditions. Finally, four adsorption mechanisms had been proposed. Various adsorption experiments had shown that DEC@GEL was not only efficient in processing dyes, but also had great potential for practical industrial applications.

Effect of three aging processes on physicochemical and As(V) adsorption properties of Ce/Mn-modified biochar

Modified biochar used for soil remediation is affected by exposure to the environment and aging process results in changes in its physicochemical properties and As(V) adsorption and immobilization in soil. Herein, the Ce/Mn-modified wheat straw-biochar (MBC) was manufactured and then aged through three artificial aging processes by exposure to soil with additional natural, freeze-thaw, and dry-wet cycles involved. It revealed that the specific surface areas of freeze-thaw-aged MBC reached 214.98 m²/g and was increased more than those of other two aging treatments. In addition, the pH values and C contents of MBC all decreased after aging while the H and O contents increased. Correspondingly, the contents of O-containing functional groups like C-O, -OH, and CO all increased by >16% with aging. The freeze-thaw cycling and alternating dry-wet aging treatments improved adsorption capacities of As(V) onto MBC and were increased by 16.2 and 10.6% at pH 5, respectively and these samples exhibited the best recyclability and adsorption selectivity for As(V). However, natural aging exerted a lower effect for As(V) adsorption by MBC due to its few changes on physicochemical properties. Causally, the freeze-thaw and dry-wet aging activated the Ce/Mn-oxides to generate Mn^2+/3+ species and a new mono-Ce that exerted a strong bonding complexation with As(V) to form Ce/Mn-O-As ligands and increased CeAsO₄ precipitation. Our results offer a new insight into the alterations expected for modified biochars with aging treatment in terms of As(V) adsorption for its long-term utilization in As contaminated soil.

Pre-magnetic bamboo biochar cross-linked CaMgAl layered double-hydroxide composite: High-efficiency removal of As(III) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions and insight into the mechanism of simultaneous purification

Trivalent arsenic (As(III)) and divalent cadmium (Cd(II)) contamination in water environment is an urgent issue because of their most toxic physicochemical properties. Herein, the simultaneous purification of As(III) and Cd(II) from aqueous solution was achieved by use of a pre-magnetic Fe modified bamboo biochar that cross-linked CaMgAl layered double-hydroxide composite (Fe-BC@LDH). In a binary system, adsorption equilibrium of As(III) and Cd(II) onto specific sorbent Fe-BC@LDH was reached within 100 and 10 min of contact time under anaerobic conditions, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacities of As(III) and Cd(II) by Fe-BC@LDH were respectively calculated to be ⁓265.3 and ⁓320.7 mg/g at pH 4.5 and 5- and 14-times than that of unmodified biochar. Moreover, adsorption in a competitive or single system, the sorbent displayed a greater preference for Cd(II). Importantly, the removal of As(III) and Cd(II) onto the composite was more favorable in a binary system due to formation of ternary FeOCdAs bonding configuration as well as the redox transformation of As(III) to As(V), inner-sphere complexation of MOAs/Cd (MFe, Ca, Mg, Al), electrostatic attraction, and co-precipitation of scorodite and hydroxy‑iron‑cadmium. Furthermore, the nanocomposite was still highly efficient after 5 adsorption cycles. This study demonstrated that the synthesized cost-effective Fe-BC@LDH is a promising candidate for the simultaneous separation of As(III) and Cd(II) from wastewater.

Adsorption of UO2 2+ by AlBaNi-layered double hydroxide nano-particles: kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic studies

AlBaNi-LDH nanoparticles have been synthesized by the co-precipitation method. A series of characterization analyses (Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy Dispersive X-ray, Transmission Electron Microscope, X-ray Diffraction, Atomic Force Microscope, and Infrared spectroscopy) proved that the surface structure of AlBaNi-LDH nano-particles was the key mechanism for UO2 2+ adsorption. The synthesized product showed good performance in UO2 2+ adsorption efficiency in neutral pH with a maximal adsorption capacity of 137 mg/g. The results demonstrated the adsorption process fitted well with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models. Also, the effects of coexisting ions and different eluents are briefly described. These results confirm that AlBaNi-LDH is an effective material for the adsorption of UO2 2+ from an aqueous solution with reusable availability.

Magnetic nanoadsorbents for micropollutant removal in real water treatment: a review

Pure water will become a golden resource in the context of the rising pollution, climate change and the recycling economy, calling for advanced purification methods such as the use of nanostructured adsorbents. However, coming up with an ideal nanoadsorbent for micropollutant removal is a real challenge because nanoadsorbents, which demonstrate very good performances at laboratory scale, do not necessarily have suitable properties in in full-scale water purification and wastewater treatment systems. Here, magnetic nanoadsorbents appear promising because they can be easily separated from the slurry phase into a denser sludge phase by applying a magnetic field. Yet, there are only few examples of large-scale use of magnetic adsorbents for water purification and wastewater treatment. Here, we review magnetic nanoadsorbents for the removal of micropollutants, and we explain the integration of magnetic separation in the existing treatment plants. We found that the use of magnetic nanoadsorbents is an effective option in water treatment, but lacks maturity in full-scale water treatment facilities. The concentrations of magnetic nanoadsorbents in final effluents can be controlled by using magnetic separation, thus minimizing the ecotoxicicological impact. Academia and the water industry should better collaborate to integrate magnetic separation in full-scale water purification and wastewater treatment plants.
