Evaluation of phosphate adsorption by porous strong base anion exchangers having hydroxyethyl substituents: kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics

Vanadium(V) Removal from Aqueous Solutions and Real Wastewaters onto Anion Exchangers and Lewatit AF5

Adsorption abilities of weakly (Purolite A830), weakly basic/chelating (Purolite S984), and strongly basic (Lewatit MonoPlus SR7, Purolite A400TL, Dowex PSR2, Dowex PSR3) ion exchange resins of different functional groups and microporous Lewatit AF5 without functional groups towards vanadium(V) ions were studied in batch and column systems. In the batch system, the influence of the sorbent mass (0.01–0.1 g), pH (2–10), the phase contact time (1–1440 min),and the initial concentration (5–2000 mg/L) were studied, whereas in the column system, the initial concentrations (50, 100, and 200 mg/L) with the same bed volume and flow rate (0.4 mL/min) were studied. Desorption agents HCl and NaOH of 0.1–1 mol/L concentration were used for loaded sorbent regeneration. The pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models as well as the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models were used to describe kinetic and equilibrium data to acquire improved knowledge on the adsorption mechanism. The desorption efficiency was the largest using 0.5 mol/L NaOH for all sorbents under discussion. Purolite S984, Purolite A830, and Purolite A400TL, especially Purolite S984, are characterized by the best removal ability towards vanadium(V) from both model and real wastewater.

Optimization of ketoprofen adsorption from aqueous solutions and simulated effluents using H2SO4 activated Campomanesia guazumifolia bark

This study used the bark of the forest species Campomanesia guazumifolia modified with H₂SO₄ to absorb the anti-inflammatory ketoprofen from aqueous solutions. FTIR spectra confirmed that the main bands remained after the chemical treatment, with the appearance of two new bands related to the elongation of the carbonyl group present in hemicellulose. Micrographs confirmed that the surface started to contain a new textural shape after acid activation, having new pores and cavities. The drug adsorption's optimum conditions were obtained by response surface methodology (RSM). The adsorption was favored at acidic pH (2). The dosage of 1 g L^-1 was considered ideal, obtaining good indications of removal and capacity. The Elovich model very well represented the kinetic curves. The isotherm studies indicated that the increase in temperature negatively affected the adsorption of ketoprofen. A maximum adsorption capacity of 158.3 mg g^-1 was obtained at the lower temperature of 298 K. Langmuir was the best-fit isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed the exothermic nature of the system (ΔH⁰ = -8.78 kJ mol^-1). In treating a simulated effluent containing different drugs and salts, the removal values were 35, 50, and 80% at 15, 30, and 180 min, respectively. Therefore, the development of adsorbent from the bark of Campomanesia guazumifolia treated with H₂SO₄ represents a remarkable alternative for use in effluent treatment containing ketoprofen.

Preparation of poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) grafted magnetic chitosan microspheres for adsorption of cationic dyes

A novel adsorbent with high adsorption capacity to remove cationic dyes was synthesized. Sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (SSS) was grafted polymerization on the surface of magnetic chitosan microspheres via -NH₂/S₂O₈^2- surface initiating system, obtaining MCS-g-PSSS microspheres. The grafted microsphere was characterized by Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, vibration sample magnetometer and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. Cationic dyes were adsorbed by MCS-g-PSSS and methylene blue(MB) was acted as a typical example. The adsorption performance was explored by varying experimental conditions. The results showed the maximal adsorption capacity was 989 mg/g at pH 1 at 25 °C. The pseudo-second order model was found to be applicable for the adsorption kinetics. The adsorption capacity increased with rising temperature and it decreased owing to adding of ions. The adsorption isotherms were the best fitted by Langmuir. MCS-g-PSSS for MB showed high adsorption capacity due to the strong electrostatic interactions and π-π stacking, which was explained by FTIR and XPS and was verified by DFT calculations. The degree of adsorption spontaneity increased with rising the temperature. The grafted MCS-g-PSSS microspheres had high adsorption capacity for various kinds of cationic dyes and excellent for remove MB in the aqueous solution.

Arsenate Adsorption on Fly Ash, Chitosan and Their Composites and Its Relations with Surface, Charge and Pore Properties of the Sorbents

One of the ways to recycle millions of tons of fly ash and chitin wastes produced yearly is their utilization as low-cost sorbents, mainly for heavy metal cations and organic substances. To improve their sorption efficiency, fly ashes have been thermally activated or modified by chitosan. We aimed to deeply characterize the physicochemical properties of such sorbents to reveal the usefulness of modification procedures and their effect on As(V) adsorption. Using low temperature nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry, potentiometric titration and adsorption isotherms of As(V) anions, surface, pore, charge and anion adsorption parameters of fly ash activated at various temperatures, chitosan, and fly ash modified by chitosan were determined. Arsenate adsorption equilibrium (Langmuir model), kinetics (pseudo-second order model) and thermodynamics on the obtained materials were studied. Neither temperature activation nor chitosan modifications of fly ash were necessary and profitable for improving physicochemical properties and As(V) adsorption efficiency of fly ash. Practically, the physicochemical parameters of the sorbents were not related to their anion adsorption parameters.
