Selective removal of anionic dyes in single and binary system using Zirconium and iminodiacetic acid modified magnetic peanut husk

Adsorption of terbutaline β-agonists from wastewater by mechano-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles modified copper (II) isonicotinate metal-organic framework

Frequent detection of terbutaline in wastewater highlights its potential risks to human health associated in the environment. Exposure to terbutaline through contaminated water sources or food chain have adverse effects to human health. This work emphasized on the removal of terbutaline from wastewater using adsorption technology. Mechanochemically synthesized [Cu(INA)2] metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and its magnetic composite ([Cu(INA)2]-MOF@Fe3O4) are designed with higher specific surface areas and tailored features to accommodate the molecular size and structure of terbutaline. Thus, batch experiment has been conducted using the [Cu(INA)2]-MOF and [Cu(INA)2]-MOF@Fe3O4 for the terbutaline adsorption. The adsorption efficiency achieved by the MOFs was 91.8% and 99.3% for the Cu(INA)2]-MOF and [Cu(INA)2]-MOF@Fe3O4 respectively. The optimum for the adsorption study included terbutaline concentration of 40 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 5 mg/L, pH of 11, temperature of 25 °C and equilibrium time of 40 minutes. The kinetics and isotherms have been described by pseudo-second order and Langmuir models, while the thermodynamics revealed the exothermic and spontaneous nature of the process. The promising performance of the MOFs is manifested on the ease of regeneration and reusability, achieving adsorption efficiency of 85.0% and 94.7% by the Cu(INA)2]-MOF and [Cu(INA)2]-MOF@Fe3O4, respectively at five consecutive cycles. The higher performance of the MOFs demonstrates their excellent potentialities for the terbutaline adsorption from the aqueous solution.

Biocomposite based on zirconium and amine-grafted walnut shell with antibacterial properties for the removal of Alizarin red in water: batch and column studies

Recent progress has been made in the application of novel zirconium-loaded amine-grafted walnut shells as multifunctional adsorbents for the remediation of Alizarin red (AR) and bacteria in aqueous solutions. The morphology and functional groups of ACWNS@Zr were studied using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques, X-ray diffraction (XRD), pH point of zero charges (pHpzc), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Adsorption and regeneration tests were carried out in batch and column mode. The ACWNS@Zr had a Langmuir maximum capacity of 415.5 ± 6.1 mg g^-1 at 303 K. The spread plate technique was used to evaluate the adsorbent's antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. ACWNS@Zr exhibited inhibitory potential towards S. aureus and E. coli in the suspensions by 53.3% and 15.0%, respectively. Electrostatic interaction and complexation interaction could be the key mechanisms governing AR dye removal. Equilibrium isotherms fit Langmuir models better for both batch and column studies, while adsorption kinetics to pseudo-second-order and Thomas models for batch and column studies, respectively. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous. Furthermore, columns' mass transfer capacity (B) increased as the concentration increased due to the enhanced driving force for AR adsorption onto ACWNS@Zr. Regeneration with NaOH solution of AR-loaded ACWNS@Zr was remarkable.

Competitive adsorption of Alizarin Red S and Bromocresol Green from aqueous solutions using brookite TiO2 nanoparticles: experimental and molecular dynamics simulation

In this work, the effective adsorption and the subsequent photodegradation activity, of TiO₂ brookite nanoparticles, for the removal of anionic dyes, namely, Alizarin Red S (ARS) and Bromocresol Green (BCG) were studied. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of both dyes' concentration, contact time, and temperature. Photodegradation experiments for the adsorbed dyes were achieved using ultraviolet light illumination (6 W, λ = 365 nm). The single adsorption isotherms were fitted to the Sips model. The binary adsorption isotherms were fitted using the Extended-Sips model. The results of adsorption isotherms showed that the estimated maximum adsorption uptakes in the binary system were around 140 mg g^-1 and 45.5 mg g^-1 for ARS and BCG, respectively. In terms of adsorption kinetics, the uptake toward ARS was faster than BCG molecules in which the equilibrium was obtained in 7 min for ARS, while it took 180 min for BCG. Moreover, the thermodynamics results showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous for both anionic dyes. All these macroscopic competitive adsorption results indicate high selectivity toward ARS molecules in the presence of BCG molecules. Additionally, the TiO₂ nanoparticles were successfully regenerated using UV irradiation. Moreover, molecular dynamics computational modeling was performed to understand the molecules' optimum coordination, TiO₂ geometry, adsorption selectivity, and binary solution adsorption energies. The simulation energies distribution exhibits lower adsorption energies for ARS in the range from - 628 to - 1046 [Formula: see text] for both single and binary systems. In addition to that, the water adsorption energy was found to be between - 42 and - 209 [Formula: see text].
