A five-year investigation of water quality and heavy metal mass flux of an industrially affected river

Investigation and comparative analysis of ecological risk for heavy metals in sediment and surface water in east coast estuaries of India

The sediments and surface water from 8 stations each from Dhamara and Paradeep estuarine areas were sampled for investigation of heavy metals, Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn, Ni, Zn, Fe, and Cr contamination. The objective of the sediment and surface water characterization is to find the existing spatial and temporal intercorrelation. The sediment accumulation index (I_sed), enrichment index (I_En), ecological risk index (I_EcR) and probability heavy metals (p-HMI) reveal the contamination status with Mn, Ni, Zn, Cr, and Cu showing permissible (0 ≤ I_sed ≤ 1, I_En ˂ 2, I_EcR ≤ 150) to moderate (1 ≤ I_sed ≤ 2, 40 ≤ R_f ≤ 80) contamination. The p-HMI reflects the range from excellent (p-HMI = 14.89-14.54) to fair (p-HMI = 22.31-26.56) in off shore stations of the estuary. The spatial patterns of the heavy metals load index (I_HMc) along the coast lines indicate that the pollution hotspots are progressively divulged to trace metals pollution over time. Heavy metal source analysis coupled with correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) was used as a data reduction technique, which reveals that the heavy metal pollution in marine coastline might originate from redox reactions (FeMn coupling) and anthropogenic sources.

A sustainable vanadium bioremediation strategy from aqueous media by two potential green microalgae

Globally, environmental concerns are rapidly growing due to increasing pollution levels. Vanadium is a hazardous heavy metal that poses health issues with an exposure concentration of about 2 ppm. It is regularly discharged by some industries and poses an environmental challenge. There are no sustainable green treatment methods for discharged effluents to mitigate vanadium threats to humans and the environment. In this study, the goal was to develop a green, sustainable method for removing vanadium and to utilize the produced biomass for biofuels, thus offsetting the treatment cost. Microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana SU1 and Picochlorum oklahomensis were employed for vanadium (III) treatment. The maximum removal was 25.5 mg L^-1 with biomass and lipid yields of 3.0 g L^-1 and 884.4 mg L^-1 respectively after 14 days of treatment. The vanadium removal capacity by microalgae was further enhanced up to 2-2.7 folds while optimizing the key parameters, pH, and temperature before removing biomass from the liquid phase. FTIR is used to analyse the reactive groups in algal cell walls to confirm vanadium adsorption and to understand the dominant and quantitative interactions. Zeta potential analysis helps to find out the most suitable pH range to facilitate the ionic bonding of biomass and thus maximum vanadium adsorption. This study addresses regulating external factors for enhancing the removal performance during microalgal biomass harvesting, which significantly enhances the removal of vanadium (III) from the aqueous phase. This strategy aims to improve the removal efficiency of microalgal treatment at an industrial scale for the bioremediation of vanadium and other inorganic pollutants.

Spatial Distribution and Source Identification of Water Quality Parameters of an Industrial Seaport Riverbank Area in Bangladesh

The Pasur River is a vital reservoir of surface water in the Sundarbon area in Bangladesh. Mongla seaport is located on the bank of this river. Many industries and other commercial sectors situated in this port area are discharging waste into the river without proper treatment. For this reason, geospatial analysis and mapping of water pollutant distribution were performed to assess the physicochemical and toxicological situation in the study area. We used different water quality indices such as Metal Index (MI), Comprehensive Pollution Index (CPI), and Weighted Arithmetic Water Quality Index Method (WQI) to improve the understanding of pollution distribution and processes determining the quality of river water. Multivariate statistical methods were used to evaluate loads and sources of pollutants in the Pasur River system. The results indicate that the sources of contaminants are both geogenic and anthropogenic, including untreated or poorly treated wastewater from industries and urban domestic waste discharge. The concentration range of total suspended solid (TSS), chloride, iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) were from 363.2 to 1482.7, 108.2 to 708.93, 1.13 to 2.75, and 0.19 to 1.41 mg/L, respectively, significantly exceeding the health-based guideline of WHO and Bangladeshi standards. The high Fe and Mn contents are contributions from geogenic and anthropogenic sources such as industrial waste and construction activities. The average pH value was 8.73, higher than the WHO and Bangladeshi standard limit. WQI (ranging from 391 to 1336), CPI (6.71 to 23.1), and MI (7.23 to 23.3) were very high and greatly exceeded standard limits indicating that the Pasur River water is highly polluted. The results of this study can be used as a first reference work for developing a surface water quality monitoring system and guide decisionmakers for priorities regarding wastewater treatment.
