Impact of municipal solid waste dumpsites on trace metal contamination levels in the surrounding area: a case study in West Africa, Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire

A case study of environmental pollution by pathogenic bacteria and metal(oid)s at Soran Landfill Site, Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan Region

Environmental pollution is a serious issue all around the world, especially when it is caused by metal(oid)s and pathogenic microorganisms. This study reports here for the first time on the contamination of soil and water with metal(oid)s and pathogenic bacteria directly resulting from the Soran Landfill Site. Soran landfill is a level 2 solid waste disposal site that lacks leachate collection infrastructure. The site is potentially an environmental and public hazard caused by metal(oid)s content and significantly dangerous pathogenic microorganisms through leachate release into the soil and nearby river. This study reports on the levels of the metal(oid)s content of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Pb, Zn, and Ni obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer in soil, leachate stream mud, and leachate samples. Five pollution indices are used to assess potential environmental risks. According to the indices, Cd and Pb contamination is significant, whereas As, Cu, Mn, Mo, and Zn pollution is moderate. A total of 32 isolates of bacteria were defined from soil, leachate stream mud, and liquid leachate samples: 18, 9, and 5, respectively. Moreover, 16 s rRNA analysis suggested that the isolates belong to three enteric bacterial phyla of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. The closest GenBank matches of 16S rDNA sequences indicated the presence of the genera: Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, Exiguobacterium, Trichococcus, Providencia, Enterococcus, Macrococcus, Serratia, Salinicoccus, Proteus, Rhodococcus, Brevibacterium, Shigella, Micrococcus, Morganella, Corynebacterium, Escherichia, and Acinetobacter. The identity percentage was mostly between 95%-100%. The results of this study show the levels of microbiological and geochemical contamination of soils, surface and potentially ground water with harmful microorganisms and toxic metal(oid)s originating specifically from Soran landfill leachate which subsequently incorporated into the surrounding environment, creating thus a considerable health and environmental risk.

Fast Detection of Cadmium in Chocolate by Solid Sampling Electrothermal Vaporization Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and Its Application on Dietary Exposure Risk Assessment

In this work, a rapid detection method using solid sampling electrothermal vaporization atomic absorption spectrometry (SS-ETV-AAS) was established for cadmium in chocolate. The instrumental system includes a solid sampling ETV unit, a catalytic pyrolysis furnace, an AAS detector, and a gas supply system with only an air pump and a hydrogen generator. Herein, MgO material with 1.0−1.5 mm particle size was first employed to replace the kaolin filler previously used to further shorten the peak width and to thereby improve the sensitivity. With 350 mL/min of air, a chocolate sample was heated for 25 s from 435 to 464 °C to remove water and organic matrices; then, after supplying 240 mL/min hydrogen and turning down air to 120 mL/min, a N2/H2 mixture gas was formed to accelerate Cd vaporization from chocolate residue under 465 to 765 °C. Under the optimized conditions, the detection limit (LOD) was obviously lowered to 70 pg/g (vs. previous 150 pg/g) with R2 > 0.999; the relative standard deviations (RSD) of repeated measurements for real chocolate samples ranged from 1.5% to 6.4%, indicating a favorable precision; and the Cd recoveries were in the range of 93−107%, proving a satisfied accuracy. Thus, the total analysis time is less than 3 min without the sample digestion process. Thereafter, 78 chocolate samples with different brands from 9 producing countries in China market were collected and measured by this proposed method. Based on the measured Cd concentrations, a dietary exposure assessment was performed for Chinese residents, and the target hazard quotient (THQ) values are all less than 1, proving no significant health risk from intaking chocolate cadmium for Chinese residents.

Soil Risk Assessment in the Surrounding Area of Hulene-B Waste Dump, Maputo (Mozambique)

Soil contamination in areas close to unplanned dumpsites represents an increasing risk to the ecosystems and human health. This study aimed to evaluate soil quality in the area surrounding the Hulene-B waste dump, Maputo, Mozambique, and to estimate potential ecological and human health risks. A total of 71 surface soil samples were collected in the surrounding area of the dump, along with 10 samples in areas considered not impacted by the dump. Chemical and mineralogical analyses were performed using XRF and XRD. Quartz was the most abundant mineral phase, followed by feldspars, carbonates, clay minerals, and Fe oxides/hydroxides. Results showed a significant contribution to ecological degradation by PTE enrichment, ranked as Zn >> Cu > Cr > Zr > Pb > Ni > Mn. Carcinogenic risk for both children and adults was significant due to Pb soil content. Soil sample concentrations of Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Zr, posing a risk especially in children, suggested the need for continuous monitoring, as well as the definition and implementation of mitigation measures.

Trace metal concentrations, fluxes, and potential human health risks in West Africa rivers: a case study on the Bia, Tanoé, and Comoé rivers (Cote d'Ivoire)

Downstream water pollution resulting from anthropogenic pressures on upstream water can cause conflicts, especially in transboundary rivers basins. This study assessed trace metals cadmium, lead, copper, and iron total concentrations, fluxes, and the potential human health risks through ingestion or dermal contact of waters at the mouth of three West African transboundary rivers: the Comoé, Bia, and Tanoé rivers. The results showed highest total concentrations during the months of May and October and statistically comparable concentrations in the rivers. The fluxes discharged to the Atlantic Ocean through the Aby and Ebrie Lagoons are as high as average values found elsewhere in the World. Trace metals lead, copper, and iron fluxes were highest during the month of October in the Bia, Tanoé, and Comoé rivers. The cadmium flux was highest during the month of October in the Bia and Comoé rivers, and during the months of February and December in the Tanoé River, indicating that contamination came mainly from upstream waters and the draining of the river basins. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that the trace metals were mainly from anthropogenic sources including gold mining and agriculture. The total concentrations were lower than international guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, the potential human health risk assessment results suggest a significant likelihood of community exposure to harmful effects but not to cancers through water ingestion. This work recommends including small rivers when assessing global river metal fluxes to the ocean and also reducing upstream inputs from human activities to mitigate downstream river water pollution.

Nitrogen addition facilitates phytoremediation of PAH-Cd cocontaminated dumpsite soil by altering alfalfa growth and rhizosphere communities

Thousands of unlined landfills and open dumpsites seriously threatened the safety of soil and groundwater due to leachate leakage with a mass of pollutants, particularly heavy metals, organic contaminants and ammonia. Phytoremediation is widely used in the treatment of cocontaminated soils because it is cost-effective and environmentally friendly. However, the extent to which phytoremediation efficiency and plant physiological responses are affected by the high nitrogen (N) content in such cocontaminated soil is still uncertain. Here, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of N addition on the applicability of legume alfalfa remediation for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon‑cadmium (PAHCd) co-/contaminated soil and the corresponding microbial regulation mechanism. The results showed that the PAH dissipation rates and Cd removal rates in the high-contamination groups increased with the external N supply, among which the pyrene dissipation rates in the cocontaminated soil was elevated most significantly, from 78.10% to 87.25%. However, the phytoremediation efficiency weakened in low cocontaminated soil, possibly because the excessive N content had inhibitory effects on the rhizobium Ensifer and restrained alfalfa growth. Furthermore, the relative abundance of PAH-degrading bacteria in the rhizosphere dominated PAH dissipation. As reflected by principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) analysis and hierarchical dendrograms, the microbial community composition changed with N addition, and a more pronounced shift was found in the rhizosphere relative to the endosphere or shoots of alfalfa. This study will provide a theoretical basis for legume plant remediation of dumpsites as well as soil contaminated with multiple pollutants.
