A review on the management of rinse wastewater in the agricultural sector

Pesticides have become indispensable compounds to sustain global food production. However, a series of sustainable agricultural practices must be ensured to minimize health and environmental risks, such as eco-friendly cultivation techniques, the transition to biopesticides, appropriate hygiene measures, etc. Hygiene measures should include the management of rinse wastewater (RWW) produced when cleaning agricultural equipment and machinery contaminated with pesticides (among other pollutants), such as sprayers or containers. Although some technical guidelines encourage the reuse of RWW in agricultural fields, in many cases the application of specialized treatments is a more environmentally friendly option. Solar photocatalysis was found to be the most widely studied physical-chemical method, especially in regions with intense solar radiation, generally using catalysts such as TiO2, Na2S2O8, and H2O2, operating for relatively short treatment periods (usually from 10 min to 9 h) and requiring accumulated radiation levels typically ranging from 3000 to 10000 kJ m-2. Biological treatments seem to be particularly suitable for this application. Among them, biobed is a well-established and robust technology for the treatment of pesticide-concentrated water in some countries, with operating periods that typically range from 1 to 24 months, and with temperatures preferably close to 20 °C; but further research is required for its implementation in other regions and/or conditions. Solar photocatalysis and biobeds are the only two systems that have been tested in full-scale treatments. Alternatively, fungal bioremediation using white rot fungi has shown excellent efficiencies in the degradation of pesticides from agricultural wastewater. However, greater efforts should be invested in gathering more information to consolidate these technologies and expand their use in the agricultural sector.

Fungal and bacterial assisted bioremediation of environmental toxicant (N-[2-[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] ethyl]-2-(trifluoromethyl) benzamide) holding benzamidic genesis elucidating the eco-friendly strategy

Fluopyram (FLP) containing benzamidic genesis utilized for seed detoxification and as a foliar application is associated with low profound toxicity in mammals but long-term toxicology investigations have revealed that FLP can stimulate tumor growth. FLP attenuation has been the first time scrutinized employing microorganisms originally identified from soils. Biodegrative assays of four fungal strains; Aspergillus fumigatus (AFu), Aspergillus terreus (AT), Aspergillus flavus (AF), Aspergillus niger (AN), and three bacterial strains: Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) Streptococcus pyogenes (SPy), and Escherichia coli (EC), were employed. Ten milligrams per liter FLP concentration was made employing separately microbe and analyzed for 35 days. The analytical technique was inclusive of ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric and high-performance liquid chromatography procedure endeavored to test FLP biodegradation. SP and AT exhibited maximal potentiality to metabolize FLP. HPLC is indicative of several metabolites formations. FLP degradation by AFu, EC, SPy, AN, AF, AT, SP was observed to be 24.2%, 82.7%, 89.8%, 90.7%, 91.3%, 95.4%, and 99.3%, explicating the efficacy of all strains employed in FLP degradation. Current investigations are indicative of significant bioremediation strategies for xenobiotic mitigation. Furthermore, the current examinations are inclusive of the augmentation of biodegradative assays to be utilized on a large scale for efficient environmental management cost-effectively and sustainably.

Particularities of Fungicides and Factors Affecting Their Fate and Removal Efficacy: A Review

Systemic fungicide use has increased over the last decades, despite the susceptibility of resistance development and the side effects to human health and the environment. Although herbicides and insecticides are detected more frequently in environmental samples, there are many fungicides that have the ability to enter water bodies due to their physicochemical properties and their increasing use. Key factors affecting fungicide fate in the environment have been discussed, including the non-target effects of fungicides. For instance, fungicides are associated with the steep decline in bumblebee populations. Secondary actions of certain fungicides on plants have also been reported recently. In addition, the use of alternative eco-friendly disease management approaches has been described. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) comprise an environmentally friendly, low cost, and efficient fungicide remediation technique. Fungicide removal within CWs is dependent on plant uptake and metabolism, absorption in porous media and soil, hydrolysis, photodegradation, and biodegradation. Factors related to the efficacy of CWs on the removal of fungicides, such as the type of CW, plant species, and the physicochemical parameters of fungicides, are also discussed in this paper. There are low-environmental-risk fungicides, phytohormones and other compounds, which could improve the removal performance of CW vegetation. In addition, specific parameters such as the multiple modes of action of fungicides, side effects on substrate microbial communities and endophytes, and plant physiological response were also studied. Prospects and challenges for future research are suggested under the prism of reducing the risk related to fungicides and enhancing CW performance.

Pyraclostrobin Removal in Pilot-Scale Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands and in Porous Media Filters

Pyraclostrobin is a fungicide extensively used for the control of various fungal diseases and is frequently detected in environmental samples. Natural systems, such as constructed wetlands (CWs) and gravity filters, are effective and environmentally friendly treatment systems, which can reduce or eliminate pesticides from the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the capacity of two pilot-scale CWs (porous media: cobbles and fine gravel, planted with Phragmites australis) and six gravity filters (filling material: bauxite, carbonate gravel and zeolite) to remove pyraclostrobin from polluted water originating from spraying equipment rinsing sites. For this, experiments were conducted to test the performance of the above natural systems in removing this fungicide. The results showed that the mean percent pyraclostrobin removal efficiencies for cobbles and fine gravel CW units were 56.7% and 75.2%, respectively, and the mean percent removals for HRTs of 6 and 8 days were 68.7% and 62.8%, respectively. The mean removal efficiencies for the bauxite, carbonate gravel and zeolite filter units were 32.5%, 36.7% and 61.2%, respectively, and the mean percent removals for HRTs 2, 4 and 8 days were 39.9%, 43.4% and 44.1%, respectively. Regarding the feeding strategy, the mean removal values of pyraclostrobin in gravity filter units were 43.44% and 40.80% for continuous and batch feeding, respectively. Thus, these systems can be used in rural areas for the treatment of spraying equipment rinsing water.

Wastewater Treatment Using Constructed Wetland: Current Trends and Future Potential

Constructed wetlands (CW) is an environmentally friendly technique for removing pollutants from wastewater and has been applied to municipal wastewater, petroleum refinery wastewater, agriculture drainage, acid mine drainage, etc. The past decade has seen a remarkable number of innovations in the exponentially growing field of microbiology. This manuscript covers a critical review of key aspects of CW, such as various types of CW, the contaminants and their removal mechanisms, degradation pathways, challenges and opportunities, materials, applications, and theory with a focus on recent advances in the last three decades. In addition, an attempt has been taken to project future advances in the field of CW and facilitate these advances by framing key unsolved problems in CW. Guidelines are prepared for the fast-growing CW field through the standardization of key design aspects. This review covers the evaluation of the current state-of-the-art of CW technology and provides definitions and performance metric nomenclature in an effort to unify the fast-growing CW community. It also contains an outlook on the emerging trends in CW and proposes future research and development directions.
