Uncertainty of pesticides in foodstuffs, associated environmental and health risks to humans-a critical case of Bangladesh with respect to global food policy

Pesticide residues in vegetables from Gansu province, China and risk assessment by Monte Carlo simulation

To assess the dietary exposure risks of pesticide residues in vegetables for the general population, the presence of 39 pesticides was determined in 70 samples, of which 13 were detected. The most frequently detected pesticide was bifenthrin, with a detection rate of 35.7%, mainly found in gingers, followed by isoprocarb and acephate (11.4%) and dimethoate (8.6%). In 17.1% of the samples two or more pesticide residues were found. Acute, chronic and chronic cumulative dietary exposure risk was assessed. Chronic exposure risks were determined by Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). Estimated chronic exposure to carbofuran, omethoate, disulfoton and dimethoate of approximately 49%, 52%, 40% and 3%, respectively, were at non-carcinogenic human risk. Acute exposure risk to acephate was considered to be of concern due to the high acute hazard quotient (aHQ).

A critical review of sustainable pesticide remediation in contaminated sites: Research challenges and mechanistic insights

Incidental pesticide application on farmlands can result in contamination of off-target biota, soil, groundwater, and surrounding ecosystems. To manage these pesticide contaminations sustainably, it is important to utilize advanced approaches to pesticide decontamination. This review assesses various innovative strategies applied for remediating pesticide-contaminated sites, including physical, chemical, biological, and nanoremediation. Integrated remediation approaches appear to be more effective than singular technologies. Bioremediation and chemical remediation are considered suitable and sustainable strategies for decontaminating contaminated soils. Furthermore, this study highlights key mechanisms underlying advanced pesticide remediation that have not been systematically studied. The transformation of applied pesticides into metabolites through various biotic and chemical triggering factors is well documented. Ex-situ and in-situ technologies are the two main categories employed for pesticide remediation. However, when selecting a remediation technique, it is important to consider factors such as application sites, cost-effectiveness, and specific purpose. In this review, the sustainability of existing pesticide remediation strategies is thoroughly analyzed as a pioneering effort. Additionally, the study summarizes research uncertainties and technical challenges associated with different remediation approaches. Lastly, specific recommendations and policy advocacy are suggested to enhance contemporary remediation approaches for cleaning up pesticide-contaminated sites.

A critical review of sustainable application of biochar for green remediation: Research uncertainty and future directions

Biochar, a carbon-rich material produced from the pyrolysis of organic biomass, has gained significant attention as a potential solution for sustainable green remediation practices. Several studies analyze biomass-derived biochar techniques and environmental applications, but comprehensive assessments of biochar limitations, uncertainty, and future research directions still need to be improved. This critical review aims to present a comprehensive analysis of biochar's efficacy in environmental applications, including soil, water, and air, by sequentially addressing its preparation, application, and associated challenges. The review begins by delving into the diverse methods of biochar production, highlighting their influence on physical and chemical properties. This review explores the diverse applications of biochar in remediating contaminated soil, water, and air while emphasizing its sustainability and eco-friendly characteristics. The focus is on incorporating biochar as a remediation technique for pollutant removal, sequestration, and soil improvement. The review highlights the promising results obtained from laboratory-scale experiments, field trials, and case studies, showcasing the effectiveness of biochar in mitigating contaminants and restoring ecosystems. The environmental benefits and challenges of biochar production, characterization, and application techniques are critically discussed. The potential synergistic effects of combining biochar with other remediation methods are also explored to enhance its efficacy. A rigorous analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of biochar for diverse environmental applications in terms of technical, environmental, economic, and social issues is required to support the commercialization of biochar for large-scale uses. Finally, future research directions and recommendations are presented to facilitate the development and implementation of biochar-based, sustainable green remediation strategies.

Environmental fate and metabolic transformation of two non-ionic pesticides in soil: Effect of biochar, moisture, and soil sterilization

Soil moisture, organic matter, and soil microbes are the key considering factors that control the persistence, degradation, and transformation of applied pesticides under varied soil conditions. In this study, underlying influence of these factors was assessed through the fates and metabolic transformation of two non-ionic pesticides (e.g., Phorate and Terbufos) in soils. Concisely, two distinct experiments including a customized batch equilibrium (sorption study), and a lab incubation trial (degradation study) were performed, following the OECD guidelines. As per study findings, biochar (BC) amendment was found to be the most influential factors during sorption study, particularly, 1% BC amendment contributed to achieve the best results. In addition, the non-linearity of sorption isotherm (1/n < 1.0) was revealed through Freundlich isotherm, indicating the strong adsorption of studied pesticides onto the soils. On the other hand, during degradation study, soil moisture initiates the enhanced degradation of parent pesticides and subsequent metabolism. In the presence of 40% water holding capacity (WHC), 1% BC amendment enhances the metabolic transformation, while H2O2 treatment could hinder the process. Additionally, the half-life degradation (t1/2) of phorate and terbufos was controlled by biochar amendment, moisture, and soil sterilization, respectively. Finally, BC can accelerate the metabolic transformation, whereas, phorate underwent a metabolic change into sulfoxide and sulfone while terbufos turned into solely sulfoxide. This pioneering study gathered crucial data for understanding the persistence and metabolic transition of non-ionic pesticides in soils and their patterns of degradation.

Uptake and translocation of fungicide picarbutrazox in greenhouse cabbage: the significance of translocation factors and home processing

This study evaluated the uptake and translocation of the fungicide picarbutrazox (PBZ) and its isomer in greenhouse cabbage. Two distinct treatments, including foliar spray and soil application of PBZ, were used in this study. In the foliar application, the fungicide was sprayed thrice at intervals of 7 days from 30, 21, and 14 days before harvest following the OECD guidelines of fungicides in crops, whereas in soil treatment, PBZ was applied for one time at concentrations of 2 and 10 mg/kg, and cabbage was cultivated for 68 days. Additionally, the role of root and translocation factors during residual fungicide distribution was demonstrated. The quality control of the analytical study exhibited excellent linearity (R² ≥ 0.99), the limit of quantification (LOQ 0.005 mg/kg), accuracy (recovery within the range of 70-120%), and precision (relative coefficient within 0.3-13.8%) for studied PBZ and its metabolites. In the foliar application, initially higher amount of residual PBZ was evident in the outermost leaf of the cabbage, whereas in soil treatment, the highest residual PBZ was observed in the soil and roots. Therefore, the application method of picarbutrazox is a critical factor for defining the initial entry route of pesticides and the subsequent translocations through the investigated crops.

Pesticide contamination in agro-ecosystems: toxicity, impacts, and bio-based management strategies

Continuous rise in application of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems in order to ensure food supply to the ever-growing population is of greater concern to the human health and the environment. Once entered into the agro-ecosystem, the fate and transport of pesticides is determined largely by the nature of pesticides and the soil attributes, in addition to the soil-inhabiting microbes, fauna, and flora. Changes in the soil microbiological actions, soil properties, and enzymatic activities resulting from pesticide applications are the important factors substantially affecting the soil productivity. Disturbances in the microbial community composition may lead to the considerable perturbations in cycling of major nutrients, metals, and subsequent uptake by plants. Indiscriminate applications are linked with the accumulation of pesticides in plant-based foods, feeds, and animal products. Furthermore, rapid increase in the application of pesticides having long half-life has also been reported to contaminate the nearby aquatic environments and accumulation in the plants, animals, and microbes surviving there. To circumvent the negative consequences of pesticide application, multitude of techniques falling in physical, chemical, and biological categories are presented by different investigators. In the present study, important findings pertaining to the pesticide contamination in cultivated agricultural soils; toxicity on soil microbes, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates; effects on soil characteristics; and alleviation of toxicity by bio-based management approaches have been thoroughly reviewed. With the help of bibliometric analysis, thematic evolution and research trends on the bioremediation of pesticides in the agro-ecosystems have also been highlighted.

Dissipation characteristics of spirotetramat and its metabolites in two phenotypically different Korean vegetables under greenhouse conditions

This study involved analysis and method validation of spirotetramat applied to two phenotypically different Korean vegetables (e.g. Korean cabbage and shallots) to determine the safe pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL) and comparative dissipation patterns. Two steps of the investigation involved greenhouse monitoring during crop cultivation followed by LC-MS/MS analysis. Commercial spirotetramat was sprayed twice with seven-day intervals according to the spray schedule (0, 3, 7, 10, 14, and 21 days before harvest) at the dose recommended by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), Korea. During the validation of the analytical method, good linearity, specificity, and acceptable recoveries (82%-114% for Korean cabbage and 82%-111% for shallot) were established for spirotetramat and its four metabolites. The calculated biological half-life derived from the first-order reaction (t_1/2) of spirotetramat was 4.8 days for Korean cabbage and 4.0 days for shallot, respectively. The safe PHRL for Korean cabbage was suggested at 7 days, due to permissible spirotetramat concentration in terms of an acceptable MRL. The findings of the study will be used as the analytical reference point for developing spirotetramat safety guidelines for use in the vegetables investigated.

Probabilistic public health risks associated with pesticides and heavy metal exposure through consumption of common dried fish in coastal regions of Bangladesh

The chemical contaminants in dried fish are of great food safety concern and an emerging public health issue in Bangladesh. The aim of this study was to assess the public health risk associated with exposure to pesticides (organochlorine and organophosphorus) and heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, arsenic) through the consumption of dried fish (Bombay duck, ribbon fish, silver jewfish, shrimp, Chinese promfret) in coastal districts (Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Bhola, Patuakhali, Khulna) of Bangladesh. Dried fish consumption data were collected from 500 adult respondents (100 from each district) using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Pesticide residues were determined using QuEChERS extraction coupled to gas chromatography and gas chromatography mass spectrometry, and heavy metals were estimated using an atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. The results revealed that the frequency and amount of dried fish consumption was highest for Bombay duck in Cox's Bazar (11.57 g/capita/day) and ribbon fish (12.10 g/capita/day) in Chittagong. The estimated daily intake (EDI, 7.40 × 10^-5 to 1.10 × 10^-4 mg/kg/day) and health risk index (HRI, 0.013 to 0.16) values expressed no health risk from pesticide residues in all the positive samples. For heavy metals, target hazard quotients (THQ) for non-carcinogenic health risk were below 1 (0.001-0.154), indicating no health risk for all samples. However, carcinogenic risk R value indicated a potential health risk for chromium (2.64 × 10^-6 to 4.06 × 10^-6), and carcinogenic R_T value (2.82 × 10^-6 to 5.71 × 10^-6) indicated a potential health risk for all the metals. It is concluded that the risk of exposure to pesticides through the consumption of dried fish is low, while heavy metals pose moderate-to-high health risks to dried fish consumers in the study area. Thus, the study suggests an appropriate risk management policy that controls pesticides and heavy metals in dried fish to ensure safe food for local and global consumers, underpinned by a producers' capacity building and consumers' awareness raising strategy.
