Anthropogenic litter in freshwater bodies and their estuaries: an empirical analysis in Lesvos, Greece

Synthetic polymers: A global threat to aquatic benthic environments

Finding time-efficient and cost-effective data collection methods is a challenge when addressing aquatic litter pollution on a global scale. In this study, we analysed data on aquatic benthic debris collected worldwide by volunteer scuba divers through the Dive Against Debris® citizen science initiative, examining its relationship with spatial and socio-economic factors. Plastic-dominated litter was found in both marine (64 %) and freshwater (48 %) environments, followed by metal and glass. Lower litter abundances have been recorded in high income countries such as in Europe, Central Asia and North America. Plastic fragments and fishing lines were the most abundant seafloor litter items, while takeaway containers (aluminium cans, glass bottles) were dominant in freshwater environments. Single-use plastics, including objects for food and beverage consumption, accounted for about 1/3 of the total benthic aquatic debris. Our findings highlight the need to prioritise the fishing industry and change our fast-paced modern lifestyle. Citizen science initiatives, once data cleanup is conducted to overcome any bias, can provide valuable tools for better understanding and quantifying marine litter pollution. The outcomes gained can be leveraged to improve consumer awareness and inform environmental policies aimed at addressing aquatic litter pollution more effectively.

Assessment of plastic pollution in coastal areas of Karachi: Case study of West Warf, Kemari Jetty, and Manora

This study focused on marine pollution in coastal areas of Karachi, particularly West Warf, Kemari Jetty, and Manora. The research examined the sources and quantities of waste, from boat manufacturing, export units, and local commercial activities. Stakeholder interviews were conducted to understand waste management practices and identify the key contributors to ocean litter. The results indicated that restaurants, export units, boat construction, and tourist and commuter activities were the primary sources of marine pollution. Plastic was found to be the most prevalent litter category, with LDPE (e.g., single-use bags) and polystyrene (e.g., material in floating docks) being the most common types. Additionally, multi-layer packaging, such as chip wrappers, was frequently observed in the surveyed areas. Overall, this research highlights the urgent need for improved waste management and compliance measures in coastal regions to mitigate marine pollution.

Application of a microplastic trap to the determination of the factors controlling the lakebed deposition of microplastics

Microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments are hard to degrade, easy to transport, and potentially hazardous to biota. Previous studies of MPs in lakes have shown that their deposition is a significant process controlling both their lateral dispersal from a source, and their concentration within the water column. However, the lakebed depositional rates of MPs have predominantly been determined using laboratory experiments and/or through model simulations that may not fully reflect field conditions. In this paper, lacustrine depositional rates in Lake Ulansuhai were documented using an MP trap that allowed for the assessment and quantification of the depositional rates of MPs of differing size, density, and shape at three sampling sites over five different time periods. The results showed that the downward flux for all types of MPs near the lakebed was correlated with wind speed. Higher wind speeds led to the resuspension of greater amounts of MPs in the lakebed sediments and the transport of greater amounts of MPs from the lake inlet to the lake interior and outlet along the hydrologic flow directions. Consequently, higher wind speeds increased the abundance of MPs at the sediment-water interface and intensified the vertical mixing of MPs in the lake water, resulting in a higher depositional flux of MPs. Particles of differing size, shape, and density exhibited different depositional rates. In general, fragmentary, larger size, and higher density MPs were more likely to be deposited. Thus, size and shape have a strong effect on the migration and deposition of HDMPs in Lake Ulansuhai.

What Are Lake Beaches Made of? An Assessment of Plastic Beach Litter on the Shores of Como Bay (Italy)

Plastic waste dispersion is a well-recognized environmental threat, despite continuous efforts towards improving waste disposal management over the last few decades. Plastic litter is known to strongly impact upon water bodies and shorelines, affecting the health of ecosystems and impacting upon the aesthetic value of sites. Moreover, plastic waste that is abandoned on beaches contributes towards different degradation processes that potentially lead to the formation of secondary microplastics (MPs), with likely cascade effects upon the whole ecosystem. In this view, this study aims to characterize the plastic beach litter found on the shores of the western basin of Como Lake (Italy) to better understand the origin of MPs in littoral sediments, including the recognition of object typologies and the chemical characterization of polymers using Fourier-transformed infrared analysis (FTIR). The results highlighted that the most abundant polymers on beaches are polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE), representing 73% of the collected polymers. This confirms that floating, low-density polymers are more likely to accumulate on beaches. Moreover, almost 66% of litter is represented by commonly used manufactured items (disposable objects, packaging, and everyday items). This evidence, combined with the analysis of the main environmental features of the sampling sites (the main winds, distance to urban areas, and the presence of tributaries) indicate that abundance of beached litter is mainly linked to beach accessibility and the local winds. These results highlight that multiple factors affect the environmental fate of plastic litter and give insights into the assessment of secondary microplastics in beach sediments.
