Assessing the relationship between airborne fungi and potential dust sources using a combined approach

Seasonal variability of airborne mold concentrations as related to dust in a coastal urban area in the Eastern Mediterranean

Recent studies have demonstrated that the amount of specific airborne mold types and their concentrations increase during dust events. This study investigates the seasonal variation of airborne mold concentrations before, during, and after the dust transport in an eastern Mediterranean coastal area, Izmir city, Turkey. A total of 136 airborne mold samples were collected between September 2020 and May 2021. Two different culture media, namely Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) and Malt-Extract Agar (MEA), were used for enumeration and genus-based identification of the airborne mold. In addition to culture media, the influences of air temperature, relative humidity, and particulate matter equal to or less than 10 µm (PM10) were also investigated seasonally. The HYSPLIT trajectory model and web-based simulation results were mainly used to determine dusty days. The mean total mold concentrations (TMC) on dusty days (543 Colony Forming Unit (CFU)/m3 on PDA and 668 CFU/m3 on MEA) were approximately 2-2.5 times higher than those on non-dusty days (288 CFU/m3 on PDA and 254 CFU/m3 on MEA) for both culture media. TMC levels showed seasonal variations (p < 0.001), indicating that meteorological parameters influenced mold concentrations and compositions. Some mold genera, including Cladosporium sp., Chrysosporium sp., Aspergillus sp., Bipolaris sp., Alternaria sp., and yeast, were found higher during dusty days than non-dusty days. Thus, dust event impacts levels and types of airborne molds and has implications for regions where long-range dust transport widely occurs.

Exploring airborne fungal contaminations and air quality pollution in nine ancient stone temples, Surin, Thailand

This study provided crucial insights into the concentrations of airborne fungi, environmental parameters, and atmospheric pollution in Thailand's ancient stone temples. Airborne fungi were identified based on morphological characteristics. Airborne fungi, meteorological parameters, and atmospheric pollutants concurrently assessed during each sampling event, evaluating indoor/outdoor ratio. Prevalent genera included Penicillium (14.36%), Aspergillus (10.94%), Cladosporium (10.74%), Rhizopus (6.31%), and Fusarium (5.90%), with an average fungi concentration of 4884.46 ± 724.79 CFU/m3. Eighteen fungal species out of the 64 airborne fungi identified were well-known serious pathogenic agents, contributing not only to structural deterioration but also to human health. Significant variations were observed between indoor and outdoor environments and across diverse landscapes, particularly for PM10 (ranging from 43.47 to 121.31 µg/m3) and PM2.5 (ranging from 29.59 to 89.60 µg/m3), with intensive incense burning identified as a prominent source of indoor atmospheric pollution. Historical temples, particularly situated in urban areas, were identified as significant reservoirs of airborne fungi. Correlations between meteorological parameters and pollutants revealed strong associations. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis elucidated distinct patterns in airborne fungal concentrations and contaminations. This study analyzed environmental factors, pollutants, airborne fungi, and geographical variations from July 2020 to March 2021. Understanding prevalent genera, airborne fungi concentrations, pathogenic species, biodeterioration, and environmental dynamics provided strategies for improving indoor air quality and mitigating airborne fungal contamination in archaeological buildings worldwide.

Long-term study of desert dust deposition effects on phytoplankton biomass in the Persian Gulf using Google Earth Engine

Persian Gulf is surrounded by the most active dust source regions of the world. Every year, millions of tons of dust are deposited in this area causing significant adverse effects. This research aimed to fill the gap in the field of dust impact quantification regarding different and important regions in the Persian Gulf. We evaluated aerosol optical thickness (AOT) as dust, chlorophyll a (Chl a) as phytoplankton biomass, sea surface temperature (SST), and particulate organic carbon (POC) using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to quantify and analyze the impacts of dust. According to dust frequency maps over 21 years, 4 critical regions were selected including the Northern, Central, and Southern regions of the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. Slightly lower Chl a values were noted in the southern region and Strait of Hormuz compared to the Northern and Central regions. The Mann-Kendall (MK) test and Sen's slope estimator, which can determine trend parameters, were used to analyze 4 selected regions using 8 days, monthly, and yearly averaged data. The results of the MK test showed a significant positive trend for SST and a significant negative trend for POC. AOT and Chl a trends varied based on their locations. The cross-correlation test with a time lag showed maximum correlations between Chl a and dust (AOT) with a delay of 6-7 months. Also, to quantify the impacts of dust on phytoplankton biomass, R2 and analysis of variance (ANOVA) regression were used for data with a 6-7-month time lag. The results showed that the contribution of dust in the amount of Chl a variation was about 10 %-20 %. This study showed that the simultaneous use of remote sensing and statistical methods could provide necessary and timely warnings (regarding management) to prevent algal blooms and aquatic loss in this important and strategic area.

Temporal and spatial pattern of dust storms, their polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and human health risk assessment in the dustiest region of the world

This study evaluated the concentration and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Abadan City under 4 different climatic conditions: normal days, dusty days, dust with northwesterly winds, and dust with southeasterly winds. It also determined the sources of aromatics and discussed the relationship between meteorological parameters and PAH concentrations. The spatiotemporal distribution of dust in the area was determined using the HYSPLIT (hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory) back trajectory model, moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) images. For this purpose, sampling was performed for 70 days using an Omni device. The concentrations of 16 PAHs (USEPA) ranged from 46.22 to 90.96 ng/m³. The highest concentration of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs was 4-6 rings, of which 4 rings were predominant in all samples. PAH sources were identified using diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis (PCA), and it was shown that PAHs mainly originate from a mixture of sources, including vehicular emissions, petrol emissions, and traffic. Wind speed was negatively correlated with dust, except on dusty days. This result indicates a decrease in PAH concentrations when wind speed increases. On the other hand, the dust correlation with PAH was positive on normal days, but a negative correlation was observed on dusty days. This result was due to the lower concentration of PAHs from natural resources (such as dust source areas) vs. human resources (such as traffic and industry). PAH health risk assessment in Abadan City showed that the risk of carcinogenesis was higher on normal days and through skin contact. The probability of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) in all sampling conditions was potential in terms of carcinogenic risk (10^-4-10^-6). As a critical risk factor, relevant authorities should prevent, control, and reduce it.

The Relationship Between Dust Sources and Airborne Bacteria in the Southwest of Iran

The biological agents are carried from deserts and dried lands to long distances by high dust volumes. Their adverse effects can be reduced by specifying and controlling dust sources and their related biological agents. Thus, the current work examined the relationship between the bacteria in air and soil samples by taking samples from the soil surface of two dust sources, as well as from air samples during spring from Khorramshahr and Abadan cities. The dust event is the most influential factor on airborne bacteria. There is an insignificant negative (-0.06), insignificant positive (0.14), and weak positive (0.24) correlation between airborne bacteria and UV radiation, relative humidity, and temperature, respectively. After preparing a 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) clone library from the soil and air samples, operational taxonomic unit picking and taxonomic assignment were conducted using QIIME Virtual Box. In the present work, Bacillus was the dominant species. The relationship between dust sources and air samples was determined by principal component analysis. Bacteria in the Hoor-Al-Azim dust source and airborne bacteria on dusty and non-dusty days showed a more significant correlation compared to bacteria in the Shadegan dust source. Source Tracker software was used to estimate the contribution of dust sources. The primary source of dust was associated with the dried areas of Hoor-Al-Azim on the non-dusty and dusty days. Finally, the long transport of airborne bacteria was assessed by moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the back trajectory model of Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) data. The research findings can help decision-makers prioritize dust sources to control the adverse effects of dust.
