New bismuth oxyiodide/chitosan nanocomposite for ultrasonic waves expedited adsorptive removal of amoxicillin from aqueous medium: kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic investigations

Adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline using MnO2-engineered pine-cone biochar: thermodynamic and kinetic investigation and process optimization

Indiscriminate use of oxytetracycline is linked to the development of antibiotic-resistant genes, posing a serious threat to human health and ecosystem balance. This article reports the adsorptive elimination of oxytetracycline (OTC) from aqueous solution using a newly developed MnO2-modified pine-cone biochar (MnO2/PCBC). The MnO2/PCBC was characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, CHNS analyzer, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller N2 adsorption analyzer. Batch adsorption experiments, designed using the central composite design framework of response surface methodology, were conducted to investigate the influence of process variables on the adsorption of OTC onto MnO2/PCBC. The optimized conditions for achieving maximum removal (88.1%) were found to be at pH 8, MnO2/PCBC dose 0.44 g/L, initial OTC concentration 200 mg/L, and temperature 303 K. The adsorption process follows Langmuir (R2=0.95) and Freundlich (R2=0.95) isotherms and pseudo-second-order (R2=0.99) adsorption kinetics. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic (ΔH0 = 33.04 kJ/mol) and spontaneous in nature (ΔG0 from -1.33 kJ/mol at 283 K to -5.65 kJ/mol at 313 K). The synthesized MnO2/PCBC could be recycled and reused for OTC removal with a percentage removal of around 80% after fifth cycle. The results indicate an effective removal of oxytetracycline with only 0.44 g/L MnO2/PCBC with maximum adsorption capacity of 357.14 mg/g which demonstrates improved performance in comparison to many adsorbents reported in literature. This implies that MnO2/PCBC offers potential to be developed into a cost-effective technique for antibiotic removal from water.

The Application of Hydroxyapatite NPs for Adsorption Antibiotic from Aqueous Solutions: Kinetic, Thermodynamic, and Isotherm Studies

Antibiotic pollution has become a serious concern due to the extensive use of antibiotics, their resistance to removal, and their detrimental effects on aquatic habitats and humans. Hence, developing an efficient antibiotic removal process for aqueous solutions has become vital. Amoxicillin (Amox) is one of the antibiotics that has been efficiently removed from an aqueous solution using hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAP NPs). The current study synthesizes and utilizes hydroxyapatite nanoparticles as a cost-effective adsorbent. Adsorbent dose, pH solution, initial Amox concentration, equilibrium time, and temperature are among the factors that have an evident impact on Amox antibiotic adsorption. The (200) mg dose, pH (5), temperature (25) °C, and time (120) min are shown to be the best-optimized values. The nonlinear Langmuir’s isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models with equilibrium capacities of 4.01 mg/g are highly compatible with the experimental adsorption data. The experimental parameters of the thermodynamic analysis show that the Amox antibiotic adsorption onto HAP NPs powder is spontaneous and exothermic.

Arsenic in drinking water: overview of removal strategies and role of chitosan biosorbent for its remediation

Accessibility to clean drinking water often remains a crucial task at times. Among other water pollutants, arsenic is considered a more lethal contaminant and has become a serious threat to human life globally. This review discussed the sources, chemistry, distribution, and toxicity of arsenic and various conventional technologies that are in option for its removal from the water system. Nowadays, biosorbents are considered the best option for arsenic-contaminated water treatment. We have mainly focused on the need and potential of biosorbents especially the role of chitosan-based composites for arsenic removal. The chitosan-based sorbents are economically more efficient in terms of their, low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, eco-friendly nature, and reusability. The role of various modification techniques, such as physical and chemical, has also been evaluated to improve the physicochemical properties of biosorbent. The importance of adsorption kinetic and isotherm models and the role of solution pH and pH_PZC for arsenic uptake from the polluted water have also been investigated. Some other potential applications of chitosan-based biosorbents have also been discussed along with its sustainability aspect. Finally, some suggestions have been highlighted for further improvements in this field.

Ultrasonication expedited As(III) adsorption onto chitosan impregnated Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide biosorbent: Optimization studies and artificial intelligence modelling

Chitosan intercalated Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (Ni-Fe LDH/Ch), prepared by co-precipitation was examined for adsorptive elimination of arsenic (III). Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Dynamic Light Scattering validated the successful synthesis of the composite with enhanced adsorption sites. Maximal As(III) removal was obtained at adsorbent dose 1 gL^-1, pH 7, ultrasonication time 30 min, temperature 298 K, and initial arsenic concentration 50 mgL^-1. The experimentally obtained values fit the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order dynamics well (R² > 0.98), while thermodynamic evaluation confirmed exothermic and spontaneous reaction (ΔG = -8.13 kJ mol^-1). Further, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system and artificial neural network successfully predicted As(III) removal percentage with a high correlation coefficient (R² > 0.94) and low statistical errors (MSE< 0.002, AARE< 0.063). The prepared material successfully brought down arsenic level by 62% in a natural water sample and showed good reusability up to 5 consecutive treatment cycles. The results recommended that Ni-Fe LDH/Ch has ample potential for arsenic remediation, and further investigations can be carried out for large-scale applications.
