Valorisation of Agri-Food Waste for Bioactive Compounds: Recent Trends and Future Sustainable Challenges

Worldwide, a massive amount of agriculture and food waste is a major threat to the environment, the economy and public health. However, these wastes are important sources of phytochemicals (bioactive), such as polyphenols, carotenoids, carnitine, coenzymes, essential oils and tocopherols, which have antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticarcinogenic properties. Hence, it represents a promising opportunity for the food, agriculture, cosmetics, textiles, energy and pharmaceutical industries to develop cost effective strategies. The value of agri-food wastes has been extracted from various valuable bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, dietary fibre, proteins, lipids, vitamins, carotenoids, organic acids, essential oils and minerals, some of which are found in greater quantities in the discarded parts than in the parts accepted by the market used for different industrial sectors. The value of agri-food wastes and by-products could assure food security, maintain sustainability, efficiently reduce environmental pollution and provide an opportunity to earn additional income for industries. Furthermore, sustainable extraction methodologies like ultrasound-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pulse electric field-assisted extraction, ultrasound microwave-assisted extraction and high hydrostatic pressure extraction are extensively used for the isolation, purification and recovery of various bioactive compounds from agri-food waste, according to a circular economy and sustainable approach. This review also includes some of the critical and sustainable challenges in the valorisation of agri-food wastes and explores innovative eco-friendly methods for extracting bioactive compounds from agri-food wastes, particularly for food applications. The highlights of this review are providing information on the valorisation techniques used for the extraction and recovery of different bioactive compounds from agricultural food wastes, innovative and promising approaches. Additionally, the potential use of these products presents an affordable alternative towards a circular economy and, consequently, sustainability. In this context, the encapsulation process considers the integral and sustainable use of agricultural food waste for bioactive compounds that enhance the properties and quality of functional food.

Functionally-designed floatable amino-modified ZnLa layered double hydroxides/cellulose acetate beads for tetracycline removal: Performance and mechanism

The over-reliance on tetracycline antibiotics (TC) in the animal husbandry and medical field has seriously affected the safety of the ecological environment. Therefore, how to effectively treat tetracycline wastewater has always been a long-term global challenge. Here, we developed a novel polyethyleneimine (PEI)/Zn-La layered double hydroxides (LDH)/cellulose acetate (CA) beads with cellular interconnected channels to strengthen the TC removal. The results of the exploration on its adsorption properties illustrated that the adsorption process exhibited a favorable correlation with the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, namely monolayer chemisorption. Among the many candidates, the maximum adsorption capacity of TC by 10 %PEI-0.8LDH/CA beads was 316.76 mg/g. Apart from that, the effects of pH, interfering species, actual water matrix and recycling on the adsorption of TC by PEI-LDH/CA beads were also analyzed to verify their superior removal capability. The potential for industrial-scale applications was expanded through fixed-bed column experiments. The proven adsorption mechanisms mainly included electrostatic interaction, complexation, hydrogen bonding, n-π EDA effect and cation-π interaction. The self-floating high-performance PEI-LDH/CA beads exploited in this work provided fundamental support for the practical application of antibiotic-based wastewater treatment.

Adsorption efficacy of functionalized Cu-BDC MOFs tethered 2-mercaptobenzimidazole analogue: A comparative study

A novel metal-organic framework [MOFs], and 2-[benzo [d]thiazol-2-ylthio)-3-hydroxy acrylaldehyde-Cu-benzene dicarboxylic acid was synthesized by solvothermal method and characterized using p-XRD, FSEM-EDX, TGA, BET, FTIR. The tethered organic linker, 2-[benzo [d]thiazol-2-ylthio)-3-hydroxyacrylaldehyde was commonly known as 2-mercaptobenimidazole analogue [2-MBIA]. Analysis of BET disclosed that addition of 2-MBIA to Cu-benzene dicarboxylic acid [Cu-BDC], reduced the crystallite size from 70.0 nm to 65.90 nm, surface area from 17.95 to 17.02 m² g^-1 and enhances the pore size from 5.84 nm with 0.027 cm³ g^-1 pore volume to 8.74 nm with 0.361 cm³ g^-1 pore volume. Batch experiments were conducted to optimize pH, adsorbent dosage, and, Congo red (CR) concentration. The adsorption percentage of CR on the novel MOFs was 54%. Adsorption kinetic studies revealed that the uptake adsorption capacity at equilibrium was 184.7 mg/g from pseudo-first-order kinetics which gave a good fit with the experimental data. Intraparticle diffusion model explained the process of the adsorption mechanism: diffusion from the bulk solution onto the porous surface of the adsorbent. Freundlich and Sips models were the best fit models of the several non-linear isotherm models. Temkin isotherm suggested the adsorption of CR on MOFs was of an exothermic nature.

Arsenic in drinking water: overview of removal strategies and role of chitosan biosorbent for its remediation

Accessibility to clean drinking water often remains a crucial task at times. Among other water pollutants, arsenic is considered a more lethal contaminant and has become a serious threat to human life globally. This review discussed the sources, chemistry, distribution, and toxicity of arsenic and various conventional technologies that are in option for its removal from the water system. Nowadays, biosorbents are considered the best option for arsenic-contaminated water treatment. We have mainly focused on the need and potential of biosorbents especially the role of chitosan-based composites for arsenic removal. The chitosan-based sorbents are economically more efficient in terms of their, low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, eco-friendly nature, and reusability. The role of various modification techniques, such as physical and chemical, has also been evaluated to improve the physicochemical properties of biosorbent. The importance of adsorption kinetic and isotherm models and the role of solution pH and pHPZC for arsenic uptake from the polluted water have also been investigated. Some other potential applications of chitosan-based biosorbents have also been discussed along with its sustainability aspect. Finally, some suggestions have been highlighted for further improvements in this field.

One-Step Synthesis of a Mn-Doped Fe2O3/GO Core-Shell Nanocomposite and Its Application for the Adsorption of Levofloxacin in Aqueous Solution

This study describes for the first time the synthesis, characterization, and application of a MnFe₂O₃/GO core-shell nanocomposite as an adsorbent for the removal of levofloxacin (Lev) from real water samples. The formation of the proposed nanocomposite was confirmed using various characterization techniques. The structural techniques revealed a 20 nm average particle size of the MnFe₂O₃/GO core-shell nanocomposite, with a surface area of 70.7 m² g^-1, as shown by the BET results. The most influential parameters (adsorbent dosage, stirring rate, and Lev pH) that affected the adsorption process were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design. The optimum conditions were 0.007 g, 2, and 7 for adsorbent dosage, stirring rate, and Lev pH, respectively. The adsorption behavior of Lev on the MnFe₂O₃/GO core-shell nanocomposite was examined using isotherm models, kinetics, and thermodynamics. The kinetic models demonstrated that the adsorption process was controlled by both intraparticle and outer diffusion. Furthermore, the results obtained revealed that the adsorption of Lev on MnFe₂O₃/GO was dominated by electrostatic interactions. Moreover, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isotherms confirmed that the sorption mechanism was dominated by electrostatic interactions, while Langmuir and Sips models confirmed a monolayer adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of Lev onto the MnFe₂O₃/GO adsorbent was found to be 129.9 mg g^-1. Furthermore, the thermodynamic data revealed that the adsorption system was spontaneous and exothermic. The synthesized MnFe₂O₃/GO core-shell nanocomposite showed significant recyclability and regenerability properties up to five adsorption-desorption cycles. As a proof of concept, the performance of the prepared adsorbent was evaluated for laboratory-scale purification of spiked real water samples. The prepared adsorbent significantly reduced the concentration of Lev in the real water samples and the removal efficiency ranged from 86 to 97%.
