Biosolids-based activated carbon for enhanced copper removal from citric-acid-rich aqueous media

Adsorption and leaching of fluorotelomer compounds and perfluoroalkyl acids in aqueous media by activated carbon prepared from municipal biosolids

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in nature and pose serious health risks to humans and animals. Limiting PFAA exposure requires novel technology for their effective removal from water. We investigated the efficacy of biosolid-based activated carbon (Bio-SBAC) in removing frequently detected PFAAs and their precursor fluorotelomer compounds at environmentally relevant concentrations (∼50 μg/L). Batch experiments were performed to investigate adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and leachability. Bio-SBAC achieved >95% removal of fluorotelomeric compounds, indicating that the need for PFAA removal from the environment could be minimised if the precursors were targeted. Kinetic data modelling suggested that chemisorption is the dominant PFAA adsorption mechanism. As evidenced by the isotherm modelling results, Freundlich adsorption intensity, n-1, values of <1 (0.707-0.938) indicate chemisorption. Bio-SBAC showed maximum capacities for the adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid (1429 μg/g) and perfluorononanoic acid (1111 μg/g). Batch desorption tests with 100 mg/L humic acid and 10 g/L NaCl showed that Bio-SBAC effectively retained the adsorbed PFAA with little or no leaching, except perfluorobutanoic acid. Overall, this study revealed that Bio-SBAC is a value-added material with promising characteristics for PFAA adsorption and no leachability. Additionally, it can be incorporated into biofilters to remove PFAAs from stormwater, presenting a sustainable approach to minimise biosolid disposal and improve the quality of wastewater before discharge into receiving waters.

Using circular economy principles in the optimisation of sludge-based activated carbon production for the removal of perfluoroalkyl substances

Massive sewage sludge (SS) production from municipal wastewater treatment plants and the presence of numerous pollutant types render the process of SS treatment and disposal costly and complex. Here, resource recovery from SS was maximised via the optimisation of sludge-based activated carbon (SBAC) production for the removal of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), while considering economic factors and minimising environmental impacts. SBAC production optimisation was realised under different operating conditions (different ZnCl₂ impregnation ratios and different pyrolysis activation temperatures and durations). The sorption capacity of the optimised SBAC with respect to the removal of nine commonly detected PFASs, with environmentally relevant concentrations (∽50 μg/L), from simulated wastewater was evaluated. Economic analysis and life-cycle assessment (LCA) were also performed to determine the feasibility of the process and its potential role in the circular economy. Batch adsorption tests confirmed the high efficiency of the optimised SBACs for PFAS removal (93-100 %), highlighting the possibility of converting SS to SBAC. Economically speaking, the optimised SBAC at 1.5 M ZnCl₂, 500 °C, and 0.75 h reduced total production cost by 49 %. Further, the cost could be reduced to as little as 1087 US $/metric-ton compared with that corresponding to the original conditions (2.5 M ZnCl₂, 500 °C, 2 h; 2144 US $/metric-ton). LCA results also showed that freshwater ecotoxicity, marine ecotoxicity, and human non-carcinogenic toxicity were the most affected environmental impact indicators, showing a 49 % decrease when ZnCl₂ impregnation ratio was reduced from 2.5 to 1.5 M. These findings highlighted the optimal conditions for the production of SBAC with high sorption capacity at a reduced cost and with reduced environmental impacts. Thus, they can serve as valuable tools for decision making regarding the selection of the most sustainable and economically feasible process for PFAS removal.

Investigating mixed biosolids and cardboard for methylene blue adsorption: Activation, adsorption modelling and thermodynamics

Ongoing global population boom has led to the rise in waste and related research on increasing its economic value. In such an attempt, this study aims to activate gas-to-liquids (GTL) derived biosolids (BS) and cardboard (CB) and mixed samples (50:50) using potassium carbonate to produce three activated carbons (ACs): KBS, KCB and KM respectively. The characterization of the samples revealed surface areas of 156, 515, and 527 m²/g for KBS, KCB, and KM, respectively based on Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, with increased porosity and metal content after activation evident from the Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) results, as well as the presence of magnetite in the KBS and KM samples apparent from the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) results. Additionally, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicate increased C-O-C stretches and O-H bonds after activation of the samples. The ACs were used for methylene blue (MB) removal process which is a rapid for all three samples, reaching equilibrium after 9 h, and optimal at neutral pH and maximum at the highest temperature, 40 °C. The MB adsorption capacity was highest for KM (191.07 mg/g), followed by the KCB and KBS samples. Isotherm modelling of the samples showed best fits for KBS, KCB and KM as Langmuir-Freundlich (LF), Langmuir and Toth models respectively. On the contrary, kinetic modelling using contact time study data for all samples exhibited best fits by the Diffusion-chemisorption (DC) model. Finally, the thermodynamic calculations of the mixed sample disclosed the adsorption process to be exothermic and spontaneous, with potential mechanisms being electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. Multiple cycles of KM regeneration was also achieved with good adsorption capacities. Future work will explore other activation methods and examine the magnetic properties of KBS and KM for real water treatment.

Removal of Methylene Blue from Water Using Magnetic GTL-Derived Biosolids: Study of Adsorption Isotherms and Kinetic Models

Global waste production is significantly rising with the increase in population. Efforts are being made to utilize waste in meaningful ways and increase its economic value. This research makes one such effort by utilizing gas-to-liquid (GTL)-derived biosolids, a significant waste produced from the wastewater treatment process. To understand the surface properties, the biosolid waste (BS) that is activated directly using potassium carbonate, labelled as KBS, has been characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The characterization shows that the surface area of BS increased from 0.010 to 156 m²/g upon activation. The EDS and XPS results show an increase in the metal content after activation (especially iron); additionally, XRD revealed the presence of magnetite and potassium iron oxide upon activation. Furthermore, the magnetic field was recorded to be 0.1 mT using a tesla meter. The magnetic properties present in the activated carbon show potential for pollutant removal. Adsorption studies of methylene blue using KBS show a maximum adsorption capacity of 59.27 mg/g; the adsorption process is rapid and reaches equilibrium after 9 h. Modelling using seven different isotherm and kinetic models reveals the best fit for the Langmuir-Freundlich and Diffusion-chemisorptionmodels, respectively. Additional thermodynamic calculations conclude the adsorption system to be exothermic, spontaneous, and favoring physisorption.
