Comprehensive technological assessment for different treatment methods of leather tannery wastewater

Management of tannery waste effluents towards the reclamation of clean water using an integrated membrane system: A state-of-the-art review

Tanning and other leather processing methods utilize a large amount of freshwater, dyes, chemicals, and salts and produce toxic waste, raising questions regarding their environmental sensitivity and eco-friendly nature. Total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, and ions such as chromium, sulfate, and chloride turn tannery wastewater exceedingly toxic for any living species. Therefore, it is imperative to treat tannery effluent, and existing plants must be examined and upgraded to keep up with recent technological developments. Different conventional techniques to treat tannery wastewater have been reported based on their pollutant removal efficiencies, advantages, and disadvantages. Research on photo-assisted catalyst-enhanced deterioration has inferred that both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis can be established as green initiatives, the latter being more efficient at degrading organic pollutants. However, the scientific community experiences significant problems developing a feasible treatment technique owing to the long degradation times and low removal efficiency. Hence, there is a chance for an improved solution to the problem of treating tannery wastewater through the development of a hybrid technology that uses flocculation as the primary treatment, a unique integrated photo-catalyst in a precision-designed reactor as the secondary method, and finally, membrane-based tertiary treatment to recover the spent catalyst and reclaimable water. This review gives an understanding of the progressive advancement of a cutting-edge membrane-based system for the management of tanning industrial waste effluents towards the reclamation of clean water. Adaptable routes toward sludge disposal and the reviews on techno-economic assessments have been shown in detail, strengthening the scale-up confidence for implementing such innovative hybrid systems.

Effect of Pharmaceutical Sludge Pre-Treatment with Fenton/Fenton-like Reagents on Toxicity and Anaerobic Digestion Efficiency

Sewage sludge is successfully used in anaerobic digestion (AD). Although AD is a well-known, universal and widely recognized technology, there are factors that limit its widespread use, such as the presence of substances that are resistant to biodegradation, inhibit the fermentation process or are toxic to anaerobic microorganisms. Sewage sludge generated by the pharmaceutical sector is one such substance. Pharmaceutical sewage sludge (PSS) is characterized by high concentrations of biocides, including antibiotics and other compounds that have a negative effect on the anaerobic environment. The aim of the present research was to determine the feasibility of applying Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) harnessing Fenton's (Fe²⁺/H₂O₂) and Fenton-like (Fe³⁺/H₂O₂) reaction to PSS pre-treatment prior to AD. The method was analyzed in terms of its impact on limiting PSS toxicity and improving methane fermentation. The use of AOP led to a significant reduction of PSS toxicity from 53.3 ± 5.1% to 35.7 ± 3.2%, which had a direct impact on the taxonomic structure of anaerobic bacteria, and thus influenced biogas production efficiency and methane content. Correlations were found between PSS toxicity and the presence of Archaea and biogas yields in the Fe²⁺/H₂O₂ group. CH₄ production ranged from 363.2 ± 11.9 cm³ CH₄/g VS in the control PSS to approximately 450 cm³/g VS. This was 445.7 ± 21.6 cm³ CH₄/g VS (1.5 g Fe²⁺/dm³ and 6.0 g H₂O₂/dm³) and 453.6 ± 22.4 cm³ CH₄/g VS (2.0 g Fe²⁺/dm³ and 8.0 g H₂O₂/dm³). The differences between these variants were not statistically significant. Therefore, due to the economical use of chemical reagents, the optimal tested dose was 1.5 g Fe²⁺/6.0 g H₂O₂. The use of a Fenton-like reagent (Fe³⁺/H₂O₂) resulted in lower AD efficiency (max. 393.7 ± 12.1 cm³ CH₄/g VS), and no strong linear relationships between the analyzed variables were found. It is, therefore, a more difficult method to estimate the final effects. Research has proven that AOP can be used to improve the efficiency of AD of PSS.

Maize Stalk Obtained after Acid Treatment and Its Use for Simultaneous Removal of Cu2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Cr3+ and Fe3+

In this research, eco-friendly material represented by maize stalk (MS) obtained after acid treatment was employed for simultaneous removal of Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, Ni²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cr³⁺ and Fe³⁺ (M^X+) from simulated textile aqueous matrix and tannery wastewater produced by the leather industry. The acid treatment of MS was done with 4 M HCl. The influence of experimental parameters was evaluated in order to optimize the adsorption process for simulated textile matrix. The contact time 10–60 min and initial concentration of 0.5–1 mg/L M^X+ influence were studied by batch method. Additionally, the adsorption data of M^X+ onto MS was fitting by kinetic and isotherm models. The results obtained showed that the 60 min was necessary to reach adsorption equilibrium of the MS. The adsorption capacity of MS was 0.052 mg Cu²⁺/g of MS, 0.024 mg Pb²⁺/g of MS, 0.042 mg Ni²⁺/g of MS, 0.050 mg Cd²⁺/g of MS, 0.056 mg Fe³⁺/g of MS and 0.063 mg Cr³⁺/g of MS at pH = 4.2. The Langmuir model described the adsorption process very well. The MS showed huge selectivity for Cr³⁺ and Fe³⁺ in the presence of Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Cd²⁺. The adsorption of M^X+ from liquid phases were analyzed by spectrometric adsorption method (AAS). The solid phases of MS before and after adsorption by TG and SEM analysis were characterized. When MS was used for removal of M^X+ from tannery wastewater, two major issues were investigated: First, the decrease of M^X+ content from highly polluted and difficult to treat tannery wastewaters by improve its quality and in the second part, specific recovery of M^X+ from MS mass increasing the economic efficiency of metals production based on green technology.
