Photocatalytic degradation of reactive brilliant blue KN-R by Ti-doped Bi2O3

Preparation of novel Fe-containing zeolite-A for KN-R decolorization by Fenton-like reaction

Herein, novel catalysts of Fe-containing zeolite-A (Fe/zeolite-A) were synthesized by exchanging iron ions into zeolite-A framework, and short-chain organic acids (SCOAs) were employed as chelating agents. Reactive Brilliant Blue KN-R (KN-R) was used as a model pollutant to evaluate the performance of these catalysts based on the heterogeneous Fenton reaction. The results showed that Fe-OA/3A, which applied zeolite-3A as the supporter and oxalic as the chelating agent, presented the most prominent KN-R decolorization efficiency. Under the initial pH of 2.5, 0.4 mM KN-R could be totally decolorized within 20 min. However, the mineralization efficiency of KN-R was only 58.2%. Therefore, anthraquinone dyes were introduced to modify zeolite-3A. As a result, the mineralization efficiency of KN-R was elevated to 92.7% when using Alizarin Violet (AV) as the modifier. Moreover, the modified catalysts exhibited excellent stability, the KN-R decolorization efficiency could be maintained above 95.0% within 20 min after operating for nine cycles. The mechanism revealed that the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle was accelerated by AV-modified catalyst thus prompting the KN-R decolorization in Fenton-like system. These findings provide new insights for preparing catalysts with excellent activity and stability for dye wastewater treatment.

Role of Alkyl Chain Length in Surfactant-Induced Precipitation of Reactive Brilliant Blue KN-R

To develop a cost-effective method for the effective removal of reactive brilliant blue KN-R (RBB KN-R) from wastewater, we investigated the interactions between RBB KN-R and three cationic surfactants with different alkyl chain lengths, namely dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Employing a conductivity analysis, surface tension analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and molecular dynamics simulation, we ascertained that RBB KN-R formed a 1:1 molar ratio dye-surfactant complex with each surfactant through electrostatic attraction. Notably, an augmentation in alkyl chain length correlated with increased binding strength between RBB KN-R and the surfactant. The resulting dye-surfactant complex exhibited heightened surface activity, enabling interactions through hydrophobic forces to generate dye-surfactant aggregates when the molar ratio was below 1:1. Within these mixed aggregates, self-assembly of RBB KN-R molecules occurred, leading to the formation of dye aggregates. Due to the improved hydrophobicity with increased alkyl chain length, TTAB and CTAB could encapsulate dye aggregates within the mixed aggregates, but DTAB could not. The RBB KN-R aggregates tended to distribute on the surface of the RBB KN-R-DTAB mixed aggregates, resulting in low stability. Thus, at a DTAB concentration lower than CMC, insoluble particles readily formed and separated from surfactant aggregates at an RBB KN-R and DTAB molar ratio of 1:4. Analyzing the RBB KN-R precipitate through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and measuring the DTAB concentration in the supernate revealed that, at this molar ratio, all RBB KN-R precipitated from the dye-surfactant mixed solution, with only 7.5 ± 0.5% of DTAB present in the precipitate. Furthermore, the removal ratio of RBB KN-R reached nearly 100% within a pH range of 1.0 to 9.0 and standing time of 6 h. The salt type and concentration did not significantly affect the precipitation process. Therefore, this simultaneous achievement of successful RBB KN-R removal and effective separation from DTAB underscores the efficacy of the proposed approach.

The application of Rumex abyssinicus based activated carbon for Brilliant Blue Reactive dye adsorption from aqueous solution

The environmental pollution and human health impacts associated with the discharge of massive dye-containing effluents necessitate a search for cost-effective treatment technology. Therefore, this research work is conducted with the objective of investigating the potential of Rumex abyssinicus-derived activated carbon (RAAC) for the adsorption of Brilliant Blue Reactive (BBR) dye from aqueous solutions. Chemical activation with H₃PO₄ followed by pyrolysis was used to prepare the adsorbent. Characterization of the developed adsorbent was done using proximate analysis, pH point of zero charge (pHpzc), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental design and the effect of independent variables including pH (2, 6, and 10), initial dye concentration (50, 100, and 150 mg/L), adsorbent dosage (0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 g/100 mL), and contact time (20, 50, and 80 min) were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) coupled with Box Behnken design (BBD). The analysis results revealed the exitance of high specific surface area of 524 m²/g, morphological cracks, and the presence of multiple functional groups like -OH, C=C, alkene, and amorphous structure. Maximum removal efficiency of 99.98% was attained at optimum working conditions of pH 2, contact time of 50 min, dye concentration of 100 mg/L, and adsorbent dosage of 0.15 mg/100 mL, reducing the pollutant concentration from 100 to 0.02 mg/L. Evaluation of the experimental data was done using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Sips isotherm models, in which the Langmuir model was found to be the best fit with the experimental data at R² 0.986. This shows that the adsorbent surface is homogeneous and mono-layered. Furthermore, the kinetic study confirmed that the pseudo second-order model best describes the experimental data with R² = 0.999. In general, the research work showed that the low cost, environmental friendliness and high adsorption capabilities of the activated carbon derived from Rumex abyssinicus could be taken as an effective nt for the removal of BBR dye from aqueous solutions.
