The impact of freedom of expression and belief on CO2 emissions: An examination of the group of seven

Growing concerns about the level of CO2 emissions have made identifying the key drivers of the emission issue a critical agenda item. These developments have turned identifying drivers of CO2 emissions into a popular research area. Researchers have been attempting to determine the root causes of CO2 emissions for quite some time. While many economic factors have been associated with the emission levels, researchers' interest in undiscovered factors has brought political factors to the forefront. Although some institutional/political factors have been linked to CO2 emissions in the relevant literature, the specific impact of freedom of expression and belief (FEB) has yet to be examined. Notably, as democracies' provision of economic freedoms motivates production and consumption, exerting pressure on the environment, FEB can balance it. This study is a pioneering attempt to seek answers to this question. By assigning a specific role to FEB, the research seeks to determine the key factors influencing CO2 emissions in the Group of Seven (G7) between 2006 and 2022. Results suggest that FEB might be crucial in lowering CO2 emissions, whereas economic expansion and energy use tend to increase CO2 emissions. However, the impact of trade openness has yet to be found to be significant. Thus, securing and enhancing FEB could lead to significant environmental gains in G7 countries and globally.

Does greenwashing obstruct sustainable environmental technologies and green financing from promoting environmental sustainability? Analytical evidence from the Indian economy

This study aims at assessing the impacts of green growth, in the form of adopting sustainable energy technologies and financing green projects, on environmental conditions in India. Thus, this study is important from the point of view of India's efforts in formulating strategies linked with achieving the environmental development targets enlisted under United Nations SDG‐13 declaration. In this regard, it is assumed that strategies targeted at establishing green growth in India can fail in the presence of greenwashing. To test this hypothesis, a newly introduced econometric technique, namely the Augmented‐ARDL techniques of estimation is used. Accordingly, the results obtained firstly suggest the existence of long‐run and cointegrated relationship exists between the variables of choice. Secondly, it is very much striking to find out that the the there is an inverse relationship between use of sustainable environmental technologies and environmental sustainability across India. Hence, this particular finding points to the possibility of stimulating geenwashing in the context of technology adoption in order to improve the state of the environment in India. Lastly, financing of green projects is seen to promote environmental sustainability which, in turn, affirms the absence of greenwashing in the context of green financing initiatives.

Determinants of environmental quality in India: evidence using the bootstrapped ARDL model with structural breaks

This current study examines the impact of renewable energy consumption, agriculture, and globalization on carbon emissions in India over the period from 1980 to 2018. For long-run estimates, we apply Gregory-Hansen's co-integration test, bootstrap ARDL approaches, fully modified ordinary least squares, and dynamic OLS. The empirical results of long-run estimates indicate that a 1% increase in renewable energy consumption, agriculture, and economic globalization will increase carbon emissions by 0.764%, 1.675%, and 0.517%, respectively. Moreover, this study confirms the detrimental effect of these variables on carbon dioxide emissions. Economic globalization coefficients indicate that the scale effect is valid in India. The 2002 economic crisis slowed down the country's growth rate, which reduced the ecological pollution. Several policy recommendations are derived from the empirical findings.
