Three-dimensional architectures constructed using two-dimensional nanosheets

Quantitative analysis of printed nanostructured networks using high-resolution 3D FIB-SEM nanotomography

Networks of solution-processed nanomaterials are becoming increasingly important across applications in electronics, sensing and energy storage/generation. Although the physical properties of these devices are often completely dominated by network morphology, the network structure itself remains difficult to interrogate. Here, we utilise focused ion beam - scanning electron microscopy nanotomography (FIB-SEM-NT) to quantitatively characterise the morphology of printed nanostructured networks and their devices using nanometre-resolution 3D images. The influence of nanosheet/nanowire size on network structure in printed films of graphene, WS2 and silver nanosheets (AgNSs), as well as networks of silver nanowires (AgNWs), is investigated. We present a comprehensive toolkit to extract morphological characteristics including network porosity, tortuosity, specific surface area, pore dimensions and nanosheet orientation, which we link to network resistivity. By extending this technique to interrogate the structure and interfaces within printed vertical heterostacks, we demonstrate the potential of this technique for device characterisation and optimisation.

Hybrid structure of PbS QDs and vertically-few-layer MoS2 nanosheets array for broadband photodetector

A novel three-dimensional (3D) vertically-few-layer MoS2 (V-MoS2) nanosheets- zero-dimensional PbS quantum dots (QDs) hybrid structure based broadband photodetector was fabricated, and its photoelectric performance was investigated in detail. We synthesized the V-MoS2 nanosheets by chemical vapor deposition, using the TiO2 layer as the induced layer, and proposed a possible growth mechanism. The use of the TiO2 induction layer successfully changed the growth direction of MoS2 from parallel to vertical. The prepared V-MoS2 nanosheets have a large specific surface area, abundantly exposed edges and excellent light absorption capacity. The V-MoS2 nanosheets detector was then fabricated and investigated, which exhibits a high sensitivity for 635 nm light, a fast response time and an excellent photoelectric response. The V-MoS2 nanosheets with a height of approximately 1 μm successfully broke the light absorption limit caused by the atomic thickness. Finally, we fabricated the PbS QDs/V-MoS2 nanosheets hybrid detector and demonstrated their potential for high-performance broadband photodetectors. The response wavelength of the hybrid detector extends from the visible band to the near-infrared band. The responsivity of the hybrid detector reaches 1.46 A W-1 under 1450 nm illumination. The combination of 3D MoS2 nanosheets and QDs further improves the performance of MoS2-based photodetector devices. We believe that the proposed zero-dimensional QDs and 3D vertical nanosheets hybrid structure broadband photodetector provides a promising way for the next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Rapid solvent-evaporation strategy for three-dimensional cobalt-based complex hierarchical architectures as catalysts for water oxidation

It is a challenging task to seek a highly-efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of water splitting. Non-noble Co-based nanomaterials are considered as earth-abundant and effective catalysts to lower overpotential and increase polarization current density of OER. In this work, we reported, for the first time, a "rapid solvent-evaporation" strategy for the synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) cobalt complex hierarchical architectures constructed by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. The 3D structured cobalt complexes have excellent performances in catalyzing OER with lower onset potential, overpotential, Tafel slope and better stability than commercial IrO₂. Superior electrochemical performances would be beneficial from the unique 3D structure. This extremely simple method for 3D Co complex with good OER activities makes the complex be promising commercial OER catalyst to replace earth-rare and expensive IrO₂.

Self-Assembly of Ultrathin Nanocrystals to Multidimensional Superstructures

The self-assembly of ultrathin nanocrystals (UTNCs) into well-organized multidimensional superstructures is one of the key topics in material chemistry and physics. Highly ordered nanocrystal assemblies also known as superstructures or synthetic structures have remained a focus for researchers over the past few years due to synergy in their properties as compared to their components. Here, we aim to present the recent progress being made in this field with highlights of our research group endeavors in the engineering of self-assembled complex multidimensional superstructures of various inorganic materials, including polyoxometalates. The driving forces for the assembly process and its kinetics along with the potential applications associated with these unique ordered and spatially complex superstructures are also discussed.

Enhanced Roles of Carbon Architectures in High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are high-energy-density and low-safety-risk secondary batteries, are underpinned to the rise in electrochemical energy storage devices that satisfy the urgent demands of the global energy storage market. With the aim of achieving high energy density and fast-charging performance, the exploitation of simple and low-cost approaches for the production of high capacity, high density, high mass loading, and kinetically ion-accessible electrodes that maximize charge storage and transport in LIBs, is a critical need. Toward the construction of high-performance electrodes, carbons are promisingly used in the enhanced roles of active materials, electrochemical reaction frameworks for high-capacity noncarbons, and lightweight current collectors. Here, we review recent advances in the carbon engineering of electrodes for excellent electrochemical performance and structural stability, which is enabled by assembled carbon architectures that guarantee sufficient charge delivery and volume fluctuation buffering inside the electrode during cycling. Some specific feasible assembly methods, synergism between structural design components of carbon assemblies, and electrochemical performance enhancement are highlighted. The precise design of carbon cages by the assembly of graphene units is potentially useful for the controlled preparation of high-capacity carbon-caged noncarbon anodes with volumetric capacities over 2100 mAh cm^-3. Finally, insights are given on the prospects and challenges for designing carbon architectures for practical LIBs that simultaneously provide high energy densities (both gravimetric and volumetric) and high rate performance.

Manipulating the Architecture of Atomically Thin Transition Metal (Hydr)oxides for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Graphene-like nanomaterials have received tremendous research interest due to their atomic thickness and fascinating properties. Previous studies mainly focus on the modulation of their electronic structures, which undoubtedly optimizes the electronic properties, but is not the only determinant of performance in practical applications. Herein, we propose a generalized strategy to incrementally manipulate the architectures of several atomically thin transition metal (hydr)oxides, and study their effects on catalytic water oxidation. The results demonstrate the obvious superiority of a wrinkled nanosheet architecture in both catalytic activity and durability. For instance, wrinkled Ni(OH)₂ nanosheets display a low overpotential of 358.2 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, a high current density of 187.2 mA cm^-2 at 500 mV, a small Tafel slope of 54.4 mV dec^-1, and excellent long-term durability with gradually optimized performance, significantly outperforming other nanosheet architectures and previously reported catalysts. The outstanding catalytic performance is mainly attributable to the 3D porous network structure constructed by wrinkled nanosheets, which not only provides sufficient contact between electrode materials and current collector, but also offers highly accessible channels for facile electrolyte diffusion and efficient O₂ escape. Our study provides a perspective on improving the performance of graphene-like nanomaterials in a wide range of practical applications.

A facile synthesis method and electrochemical studies of a hierarchical structured MoS2/C-nanocomposite

A facile synthesis of MoS₂ nanosheet coated BC nanofiber network as an additive free anode for LIBs has been reported. The strong interaction between the nanosheets and the carbon fibers endures it with enhanced cycling and rate performances.
