Development of a novel Ba2BiV3O11 photocatalyst with dual functions of both water oxidation and proton reduction performance

To overcome the limitation of photocatalysts with dual functionality of water oxidation and proton reduction, we proposed a novel bismuth-based Ba2BiV3O11 (BBVO) photocatalyst, which can simultaneously drive the proton reduction reaction under UV light and water oxidation reaction under visible light. After doping with sulfur through an in situ vulcanization strategy, the light absorption and charge separation efficiencies of the sulfur-doped BBVO were significantly improved, thus boosting its oxygen evolution activity (64 μmol h-1) by more than 16 times compared with independent BBVO. The experimental results demonstrate that BBVO can be employed as a very promising bismuth-based photocatalyst for solar energy conversion.

Gold nanomaterials as key suppliers in biological and chemical sensing, catalysis, and medicine

BACKGROUND

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with unique physicochemical properties have received a great deal of interest in the field of biological, chemical and biomedical implementations. Despite the widespread use of AuNPs in chemical and biological sensing, catalysis, imaging and diagnosis, and more recently in therapy, no comprehensive summary has been provided to explain how AuNPs could aid in developing improved sensing and catalysts systems as well as medical settings.

SCOPE OF REVIEW

The chemistry of Au-based nanosystems was followed by reviewing different applications of Au nanomaterials in biological and chemical sensing, catalysis, imaging and diagnosis by a number of approaches, and finally synergistic combination therapy of different cancers. Afterwards, the clinical impacts of AuNPs, future application of AuNPs, and opportunities and challenges of AuNPs application were also discussed.

MAJOR CONCLUSIONS

AuNPs show exclusive colloidal stability and are considered as ideal candidates for colorimetric detection, catalysis, imaging, and photothermal transducers, because their physicochemical properties can be tuned by adjusting their structural dimensions achieved by the different manufacturing methods.

GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE

This review provides some details about using AuNPs in sensing and catalysis applications as well as promising theranostic nanoplatforms for cancer imaging and diagnosis, and sensitive, non-invasive, and synergistic methods for cancer treatment in an almost comprehensive manner.

Development of Mixed-Anion Photocatalysts with Wide Visible-Light Absorption Bands for Solar Water Splitting

Rapid fossil-fuel consumption, severe environmental concerns, and growing energy demands call for the exploitation of environmentally friendly, recyclable, new energy sources. Fuel-producing artificial systems that directly convert solar energy into fuels by mimicking natural photosynthesis are expected to achieve this goal. Among them, the conversion of solar energy into hydrogen energy through the photocatalytic water-splitting process over a particulate semiconductor is one of the most promising routes due to advantages such as simplicity, cheapness, and ease of large-scale production. Abundant metal oxide photocatalysts have been developed in the last century, but most are only active under UV-light irradiation. To harvest a much wider range of the solar spectrum, the development of photocatalysts with wide visible-light absorption bands has become increasingly popular this century. Herein, a brief overview of materials developed for promising solar water splitting, with an emphasis on a mixed-anion structure and wide visible-light absorption bands, is presented, with some basic information on the principles, approaches, and research progress on the photocatalytic water-splitting reaction with particulate semiconductors. Typical progress on research into one- and two-step (Z-scheme) overall water-splitting systems by utilizing mixed-anion photocatalysts is highlighted, together with research strategies and modification methods.
