High pressure, a protocol to identify the weak dihydrogen bonds: experimental evidence of C–H···H–B interaction

Pressure-induced hydrogen bonding modulating Fermi resonance between fundamental modes in xylitol molecule

Xylitol, as a typical polyol, has a broad range of application prospects. However, the molecular states of xylitol under different environments are rarely reported until now. In this work, the state changes of xylitol molecules under high pressure were analyzed by Raman spectra. A Fermi resonance phenomenon in the fundamental mode of xylitol at 2945 (±0.06) cm-1 and 2955 (±0.41) cm-1 was observed at 0.99 GPa. The Fermi doublets possess the same symmetry and close energy levels, which had not been changed by pressures. However, the high pressure shortened the atomic distances and applied the extra disturbance, providing the necessary conditions for energy transfer. Besides, the Fermi doublets decoupling happened at 4 GPa due to the breaking of hydrogen bonding. This work provides an important reference for studying molecular states and weak interactions of polyols under high pressures.

Therapeutic nucleus-access BNCT drug combined CD47-targeting gene editing in glioblastoma

Glioblastoma is the most common brain primary malignant tumor with the highest mortality. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) can efficiently kill cancer cells on the cellular scale, with high accuracy, short course and low side-effects, which is regarded as the most promising therapy for malignant brain tumors like glioma. As the keypoint of BNCT, all boron delivery agents currently in clinical use are beset by insufficient tumor uptake, especially in the tumor nucleus, which limits the clinical application of BNCT. In this study, nuclear targeting of boron is achieved by DOX-CB, consisting of doxorubicin (DOX) and carborane (CB) utilizing the nuclear translocation property of DOX. The nucleus of GL261 cells takes up almost three times the concentration of boron required for BNCT. To further kill glioma and inhibit recurrence, a new multifunctional nanoliposome delivery system DOX-CB@lipo-pDNA-iRGD is constructed. It combines DOX-CB with immunotherapy strategy of blocking macrophage immune checkpoint pathway CD47-SIRPα by CRISPR-Cas9 system, coupling BNCT with immunotherapy simultaneously. Compared with clinical drug Borocaptate Sodium (BSH), DOX-CB@lipo-pDNA-iRGD significantly enhances the survival rate of tumor-bearing mice, reduces tumor stemness, and improves the prognosis. The excellent curative effect of this nanoliposome delivery system provides an insight into the combined treatment of BNCT.

Effects of Different Counter Anions on Solid-State Electron Transfer in Viologen Compounds: Modulation of Color and Piezo- and Photochromic Properties

Charge transfer (CT) and electron transfer (ET) underlie the various applications of viologen compounds. However, the CT and ET in solids are still insufficiently understood and difficult to control, which is challenging but fundamental to the design of multifunctional materials. Our strategy is to attempt a delicate control of CT and ET by subjecting model compounds to pressure. In this work, a series of viologens of the same cation with different anions show anion-dependent color and piezo-/photochromism due to ground-state CT and stimuli-induced ET; the ease of solid-state ET can be tuned in the order of Cl^- > Br^- > I^-/BF₄^-/PF₆^-/ClO₄^-. With in situ high pressure UV-vis experiments, we also observed unexpectedly the pressure-induced solid-state ET in [H₂bcpV]·I₂ besides the pressure modulation of the CT absorption. It proves pressure is a more powerful stimulus than light in tuning solid-state CT and ET.

Thinking about the Development of High-Pressure Experimental Chemistry

High-pressure chemistry is an interdisciplinary science which uses high-pressure experiments and theories to study the interactions, reactions, and transformations among atoms or molecules. It has been extensively studied thus far and achieved rapid development over the past decades. However, what is next for high-pressure chemistry? In this Perspective, we mainly focus on the development of high-pressure experimental chemistry from our own viewpoint. An overview of the series of topics is as follows: (I) high pressure used as an effective tool to help resolve scientific disputes regarding phenomena observed under ambient conditions; (II) high-pressure reactions of interest to synthetic chemists; (III) utilizing chemical methods to quench the high-pressure phase; (IV) using high pressure to achieve what chemists want to do but could not do; (V) potential applications of in situ properties under high pressure. This Perspective is expected to offer future research opportunities for researchers to develop high-pressure chemistry and to inspire new endeavors in this area to promote the field of compression chemistry science.

Pressure Effects on the Electronic and Optical Properties in Low-Dimensional Metal Halide Perovskites

Metal halide perovskites have shown enormous potential in perovskite solar cells and light-emitting diodes and made unprecedented progress in the past decade. Pressure engineering as an effective technique can systematically modify the electronic structures and physical properties of functional materials. Low-dimensional metal halide perovskites (0D, 1D, and 2D) with a variety of compositions have soft lattices that allow pressure to drastically modulate their structures and properties. High-pressure investigations have obtained a comprehensive understanding of their structure-property relationships. Simultaneously, discoveries of novel pressure-driven properties, such as metallization and partially retained band gap narrowing have contributed significantly to the further development of such materials. In this Perspective, we mainly highlight the effect of pressure on the properties and structures of low-dimensional metal halide perovskites, which is essential for designing new perovskite materials and advancing applications.

Pressure-Tuned Core/Shell Configuration Transition of Shell Thickness-Dependent CdSe/CdS Nanocrystals

Pressure is adopted as a "clean" tool to achieve a core/shell configuration transition of CdSe/CdS nanocrystals (NCs) from quasi-type II to type I. The pressure-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra demonstrate a sudden decrease in PL intensity, because of the enhanced rate of exciton-exciton annihilation of type I structured CdSe/CdS NCs. Likewise, the large decrease in the PL lifetime with pressure confirms that the electron wave function mainly localizes into the CdSe core, indicating the decreased separation of electrons and holes in type I band alignment. We propose that pressure increases the conduction band energy of the CdS shell but hardly changes that of the CdSe core with almost both unchanged valence band energies, thus ultimately increasing the conduction band offsets between the CdSe core and CdS shell to form the type I core/shell configuration. Our studies elucidate the significance of external pressure in determining the electronic and optical properties of core/shell nanomaterials.

Dihydrogen Bonds in Salts of Boron Cluster Anions [BnHn]2− with Protonated Heterocyclic Organic Bases

Dihydrogen bonds attract much attention as unconventional hydrogen bonds between strong donors of H-bonding and polyhedral (car)borane cages with delocalized charge density. Salts of closo-borate anions [B10H10]2− and [B12H12]2− with protonated organic ligands 2,2’-dipyridylamine (BPA), 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen), and rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) were selectively synthesized to investigate N−H...H−B intermolecular bonding. It was found that the salts contain monoprotonated and/or diprotonated N-containing cations at different ratios. Protonation of the ligands can be implemented in an acidic medium or in water because of hydrolysis of metal cations resulting in the release of H3O+ cations into the reaction solution. Six novel compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy. It was found that strong dihydrogen bonds manifest themselves in FT-IR spectra that allows one to use this technique even in the absence of crystallographic data.

Phase transitions and chemical reactions of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine under high pressure and high temperature

Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX) is one of the most important energetic materials. Investigations on its phase transitions and chemical reactions under extreme conditions are very important to understand the explosion process and design new energetic materials. By using a diamond anvil cell combined with in situ Raman, IR and X-ray diffraction techniques up to a pressure of ∼40 GPa, we found that β-HMX undergoes four reversible phase transitions without any chemical reaction under external pressure at room temperature. Isostructural phase transitions emerge around 5 GPa (ζ-HMX) and 10–13 GPa (ε-HMX), and another two phases emerge at 16 GPa (η-HMX) and 27 GPa (ϕ-HMX). The unit cells of ζ-HMX and ε-HMX were determined as a = 6.215 Å, b = 10.417 Å, c = 8.272 Å, β = 124.88°, P2₁/c at 6.2 GPa and a = 6.130 Å, b = 9.846 Å, c = 8.258 Å, β = 125.06°, P2₁/c at 12.6 GPa, respectively. The crystal structures of β, ζ, and ε-HMX were obtained by Rietveld refinement, based on which the rotations of NO₂ groups were found to be related to the phase transition at 5 GPa. Additionally, HMX decomposes at 8.7 GPa and 300 °C. Carbon dioxide, hydroxyl, imino and hydroxyimino groups were detected in the IR spectrum, which indicates that the reaction contains a hydrogen transfer process. Our investigation uncovers the structural variation of β-HMX under external pressure and identifies the decomposition products under extreme conditions, which provides new insight to understand the detonation process of energetic materials.

Phase transitions, crystal structures and chemical reactions of β-HMX under extreme conditions were described systematically.
