One-dimensional π-d conjugated coordination polymers: synthesis and their improved memory performance

Self-Assembly of Delta-Formamidinium Lead Iodide Nanoparticles to Nanorods: Study of Memristor Properties and Resistive Switching Mechanism

In the quest for advanced memristor technologies, this study introduces the synthesis of delta-formamidinium lead iodide (δ-FAPbI3) nanoparticles (NPs) and their self-assembly into nanorods (NRs). The formation of these NRs is facilitated by iodide vacancies, promoting the fusion of individual NPs at higher concentrations. Notably, these NRs exhibit robust stability under ambient conditions, a distinctive advantage attributed to the presence of capping ligands and a crystal lattice structured around face-sharing octahedra. When employed as the active layer in resistive random-access memory devices, these NRs demonstrate exceptional bipolar switching properties. A remarkable on/off ratio (105) is achieved, surpassing the performances of previously reported low-dimensional perovskite derivatives and α-FAPbI3 NP-based devices. This enhanced performance is attributed to the low off-state current owing to the reduced number of halide vacancies, intrinsic low dimensionality, and the parallel alignment of NRs on the FTO substrate. This study not only provides significant insights into the development of superior materials for memristor applications but also opens new avenues for exploring low-dimensional perovskite derivatives in advanced electronic devices.

Effect of terminal substituent of iso-indigo-based materials on the intermolecular stacking and memory performance

Attributed to the characteristics of narrow band gap structural units and full spectral response, iso-indigo is often used as an electron acceptor in organic electronic materials. Organic molecules with large conjugated surfaces and strong intermolecular forces can form ordered stacked structures through self-assembly. In this paper, the self-assembly performances of IDCF3 and IDCN are regulated by changing the end groups. The effects of terminal groups on the resistive memory behaviours and reproducibility are investigated. The properties of IDCF3 and IDCN devices are characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and DSC diffraction. The results show that when the end groups with different steric hindrance are introduced into the ends of the molecules with good backbone plane, the conjugated surfaces of the molecules will bend due to the different steric hindrance of the end groups in the form of cambium and layer-ordered packing, which will affect the threshold voltage and device reproducibility.

Tuning Coordination Structures of Zn Sites Through Symmetry-Breaking Accelerates Electrocatalysis

Manipulating the coordination environment of individual active sites in a precise manner remains an important challenge in electrocatalytic reactions. Herein, inspired by theoretical predictions, a facile procedure to synthesize a series of symmetry-breaking zinc metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) catalysts with well-defined structures is presented. Benefiting from the optimized coordination microenvironment regulated by symmetry-breaking, Zn-N2 S2 -MOF exhibits the best performance of nitrogen (N2 ) reduction reaction (NRR) with NH3 yield rate of 25.07 ± 1.57 µg h-1  cm-2 and Faradaic efficiency of 44.57 ± 2.79% compared with reported Zn-based NRR catalysts. X-ray absorption near-edge structure shows that the symmetry-breaking distorts the coordination environment and modulates the delocalized electrons around the Zn sites, which favors the formation of unpaired low-valence Znδ+ , thereby facilitating the adsorption/activation of N2 . Theoretical calculations elucidate that low-valence Znδ+ in Zn-N2 S2 -MOF can effectively lower the energy barrier of potential determining step, promoting the kinetics and boosting the NRR activity. This work highlights the relationship between the precise coordination environment of metal sites and the catalytic activity, which offers insightful guidance for rationally designing high-efficiency electrocatalysts.

Artificial synapse based on 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne with femtojoule energy consumption

Memristors as electronic artificial synapses have attracted increasing attention in neuromorphic computing. Especially, organic small molecule artificial synapses show great promise for low-energy neuromorphic devices. In this study, the basic functions of biological synapses including paired-pulse facilitation/paired-pulse depression (PPF/PPD), spike rate-dependent plasticity (SRDP) and fast Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro learning rules (BCM) have been successfully simulated in the 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne (DPDA) memristor device. Furthermore, ultra-low energy consumption (∼25 fJ per spike), linear and large conductance changes have been obtained in the small molecule DPDA device. This work makes a great contribution to improve the accuracy, speed and to reduce the energy consumption for neuromorphic computing.

Ion-in-Conjugation: A Promising Concept for Multifunctional Organic Semiconductors

Most organic semiconductors (OSCs) consist of conjugated skeletons with flexible peripheral chains. Their weak intermolecular interactions from dispersion and induction forces result in environmental susceptibilities and are unsuitable for many multifunctional applications where direct exposure to external environments is unavoidable, such as gas absorption, chemical sensing, and catalysis. To exploit the advantages of inorganic semiconductors in OSCs, ion-in-conjugation (IIC) materials are proposed. An IIC material refers to any conjugated material (molecules, polymers, and crystals) in Kekule's structural formula containing stoichiometric ionic states in its conjugated backbone in the electronic ground state. In this review, the definitions, structures, synthesis, properties, and applications of IIC materials are described briefly. Four types of IIC material, including zwitterionic conjugated molecules/polymers, conjugated ionic dyes, π-d conjugated molecules and polymers, and coordinatively doped polymers, are reported. Their applications in gas sensing, humidity sensing, resistive memory devices, and thermal/photo-/electro-catalysis are demonstrated. The challenges and opportunities for future research are also discussed. It is expected that this work will inspire the design of new organic electronic information materials.

Conductive One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers with Tunable Selectivity for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Conductive materials involving nonprecious metal coordination complexes as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have received increasing attention in recent years. Herein, we reported efficient ORR electrocatalysts containing M-S2N2 sites with tunable selectivity based on simple one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs). The 1D CPs were synthesized from M(OAc)2 and 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol (DABDT) by a solvent thermal method. Due to their good electrical conductivities (10-6-10-2 S cm-1), the 1D CPs could be used as ORR catalysts in low catalytic amounts without the addition of carbon materials. Cobalt-based CPs showed a well-organized structure of nanosheets with Co-S2N2 sites exposed and exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic ORR activity (Eonset = 0.93 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), E1/2 = 0.82 V, n = 3.85, JL = 5.22 mA cm-2, Tafel slope of 63 mV dec-1) in alkaline media. However, nickel-based CPs favored a 2e- ORR process with ∼87% H2O2 selectivity and an Eonset of 0.78 V. This work provides new opportunities for the construction of ORR catalysts based on conductive nonprecious metal CPs.

Cu-based metal-organic frameworks for highly sensitive X-ray detectors

Here, we constructed Pb-free Cu-DABDT-MOFs-based (DABDT = 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol) X-ray detectors. Combined with the advantage of high activation energy, the Cu-DABDT-MOFs-based detector can effectively generate and capture electrons under X-ray exposure and presents a high mobility-lifetime (μτ) product of 6.49 × 10^-4 cm² V^-1 and promising detection sensitivity of 78.7 μC Gy_air^-1 cm^-2. As groundbreaking work, these discoveries have provided information for exploring MOF materials toward green and high-performance high-energy radiation detectors by exploiting the designable structure and tunable properties of the MOF family.

Two-Dimensional Conductive π-d Frameworks with Multiple Sensory Capabilities

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-molecule hybrid frameworks have attracted great attention due to their π-d interactions for the charge-spin-lattice coupling, promising for next-generation molecular electronics. However, a high electrical conductivity is indispensable to realize such potential. Herein, we design and assemble a conductive 2D conjugated coordination thin film through an interfacial reaction between the aqueous and organic phases. Its electronic conducting properties are derived from the π-d coupling interactions to achieve an electrical conductivity of 1.05 S/cm, while the stimulus-dependent π-d interactions induce multifunctional sensory capabilities. The Co-DABDT (DABDT = 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol dihydrochloride) thin films demonstrate an excellent performance for sensing light, strain, temperature, and humidity, as well as robust mechanical stability. The 2D frameworks with multisensing properties for real-time static and dynamic monitoring are promising for smart wearable electronic systems.

Synthesis and electronic coupling studies of cyclometalated diruthenium complexes bridged by 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(benzimidazol-2-yl)-biphenyl

Three cyclometalated diruthenium complexes bridged by 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(benzimidazol-2-yl)biphenyl (H-tbibp) and capped with different terminal ligands have been synthesized and examined. In addition, two monoruthenium complexes with H-tbibp have been prepared for the purpose of comparison studies. The degree of Ru-Ru electronic coupling of these diruthenium complexes has been investigated by electrochemical and intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) analyses. These results suggest that when the same or similar terminal ligands are used, the strength of H-tbibp in mediating the Ru-Ru coupling is enhanced with respect to that of the previously reported bridging ligand 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(N-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)biphenyl, but it is slightly inferior to that of the classical bridging ligand 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(pyrid-2-yl)biphenyl. This trend is also supported by CNS analyses based on the hole-superexchange mechanism. In addition, DFT calculations have been performed to probe the spin density distributions of the singly-oxidized diruthenium complexes with H-tbibp and TDDFT calculations are used to reproduce the IVCT transitions.

Nanostructured Metal-Organic Conjugated Coordination Polymers with Ligand Tailoring for Superior Rechargeable Energy Storage

Conjugated coordination polymers have become an emerging category of redox-active materials. Although recent studies heavily focus on the tailoring of metal centers in the complexes to achieve stable electrochemical performance, the effect on different substitutions of the bridging bonds has rarely been studied. An innovative tailoring strategy is presented toward the enhancement of the capacity storage and the stability of metal-organic conjugated coordination polymers. Two nanostructured d-π conjugated compounds, Ni[C₆ H₂ (NH)₄ ]_n (Ni-NH) and Ni[C₆ H₂ (NH)₂ S₂ ]_n (Ni-S), are evaluated and demonstrated to exhibit hybrid electrochemical processes. In particular, Ni-S delivers a high reversible capacity of 1164 mAh g^-1 , an ultralong stability up to 1500 cycles, and a fully recharge ability in 67 s. This tailoring strategy provides a guideline to design future effective conjugated coordination-polymer-based electrodes.
