Conformational sensitivity of tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene derivatives with aggregation-induced emission characteristics

1,3-diene-based AIEgens: Stereoselective synthesis and applications

In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the synthesis and application of 1,3-dienes. This specific structural motif has garnered significant attention from researchers in materials science and biology due to its unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and extensive conjugation systems. The luminescent characteristics of these compounds are notably influenced by the geometry of the two double bonds. Therefore, it is essential to consolidate stereoselective synthetic strategies for 1,3-dienes. This comprehensive review seeks to elucidate the diverse techniques employed to attain stereo-control in the synthesis of 1,3-diene-based AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Particular emphasis is placed on comprehending the determinants of stereoselectivity and exploring the array of substrates amenable to these methods. Furthermore, the review underscores the AIE properties exhibited by these compounds and their extensive utility in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), stimuli-responsive materials, sensors, bioimaging, and photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) in Super-resolution Imaging: Cationic AIE Luminogens (AIEgens) for Tunable Organelle-Specific Imaging and Dynamic Tracking in Nanometer Scale

Organelle-specific imaging and dynamic tracking in ultrahigh resolution is essential for understanding their functions in biological research, but this remains a challenge. Therefore, a facile strategy by utilizing anion-π⁺ interactions is proposed here to construct an aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) of DTPAP-P, not only restricting the intramolecular motions but also blocking their strong π-π interactions. DTPAP-P exhibits a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 35.04% in solids, favorable photostability and biocompatibility, indicating its potential application in super-resolution imaging (SRI) via stimulated emission depletion (STED) nanoscopy. It is also observed that this cationic DTPAP-P can specifically target to mitochondria or nucleus dependent on the cell status, resulting in tunable organelle-specific imaging in nanometer scale. In live cells, mitochondria-specific imaging and their dynamic monitoring (fission and fusion) can be obtained in ultrahigh resolution with a full-width-at-half-maximum (fwhm) value of only 165 nm by STED nanoscopy. This is about one-sixth of the fwhm value in confocal microscopy (1028 nm). However, a migration process occurs for fixed cells from mitochondria to nucleus under light activation (405 nm), leading to nucleus-targeted super-resolution imaging (fwhm= 184 nm). These findings indicate that tunable organelle-specific imaging and dynamic tracking by a single AIEgen at a superior resolution can be achieved in our case here via STED nanoscopy, thus providing an efficient method to further understand organelle's functions and roles in biological research.

Development of a New Multiple Stimuli-Responsive Fluorescent Material Using the Minus Strategy Based on the Structure of Tetraphenyl-1,3-butadiene

In this study, we designed and synthesized a new class of aggregation-induced emission luminogens, which was inspired and developed from the structure of tetraphenyl-1,3-butadienes derivative (TPB-1) through the minus strategy by removing one of the phenyl groups. Among them, L1 and L4 exhibited an aggregation-induced emission effect and multistimuli-responsive chromic behavior. Moreover, two types of single crystals of L1 were obtained, and their different emission behaviors were elucidated clearly by analyzing the single-crystal data.

The Aggregation Regularity Effect of Multiarylpyrroles on Their Near-Infrared Aggregation-Enhanced Emission Property

Increasing the quantum yield of near-infrared (NIR) emissive dyes is critical for biological applications because these fluorescent dyes generally show decreased emission efficiency under aqueous conditions. In this work, we designed and synthesized several multiarylpyrrole (MAP) derivatives, in which a furanylidene (FE) group at the 3-position of the pyrrole forms donor-π-acceptor molecules, MAP-FE, with a NIR emissive wavelength and aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) features. Different alkyl chains of MAP-FEs linked to phenyl groups at the 2,5-position of the pyrrole ring resulted in different emissive wavelengths and quantum yields in aggregated states, such as powders or single crystals. Powder XRD data and single crystal analysis elucidated that the different lengths of alkyl chains had a significant impact on the regularity of MAP-FEs when they were forced to aggregate or precipitate, which affected the intermolecular interaction and the restriction degree of the rotating parts, which are essential components. Therefore, an increasing number of NIR dyes could be developed by this design strategy to produce efficient NIR dyes with AEE. Moreover, this method can provide general guidance for other related fields, such as organic solar cells and organic light-emitting materials, because they are all applied in the aggregated state.

Synthesis, photophysical and electropolymerization properties of thiophene-substituted 2,3-diphenylbuta-1,3-dienes

Electropolymerizable diphenylbuta-1,3-diene derivatives with AIE or AEE properties were synthesized allowing low bandgap polymers to be obtained through electropolymerization processes.
