Covalent organic hollow nanospheres constructed by using AIE-active units for nitrophenol explosives detection

Nitrophenols in the environment: An update on pretreatment and analysis techniques since 2017

Nitrophenols, a versatile intermediate, have been widely used in leather, medicine, chemical synthesis, and other fields. Because these components are widely applied, they can enter the environment through various routes, leading to many hazards and toxicities. There has been a recent surge in the development of simple, rapid, environmentally friendly, and effective techniques for determining these environmental pollutants. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research progress on the pretreatment and analysis methods of nitrophenols since 2017, with a focus on environmental samples. Pretreatment methods include liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, dispersive extraction, and microextraction methods. Analysis methods mainly include liquid chromatography-based methods, gas chromatography-based methods, supercritical fluid chromatography. In addition, this review also discusses and compares the advantages/disadvantages and development prospects of different pretreatment and analysis methods to provide a reference for further research.

Photoelectric Multi-Signal Output Sensor Based on Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Polymer Film Modified by Novel Aggregation-Induced Emission Probes

Optical sensors, especially fluorescence sensors, have been widely used because of their advantages in sensing, such as the high sensitivity, good selectivity, no radiation source, and easy operation. Here, we report an example of fluorescence sensing based on two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic polymers and highlight that the material can achieve a fast response and multi-signal output. This 2DPTPAK+TAPB-based sensor can quickly detect aromatic hydrocarbons and Fe3+ by the fluorescence signal or electrical resistance signal.

A "turn-on" fluorescent sensor based on three-component covalent organic framework for trace water detection

Trace amount of H2O is difficult to eliminate in laboratory environments and chemical industries as impurities. In some chemical reactions, trace amount of H2O can alter final reaction products, yield, and selectivity. So, the detection of trace H2O is very important. Herein, a series of TFPT[X]-BMTH- covalent organic frameworks (COFs) (X = 0, 33, 50, 67, 100 %) with intramolecular charge transfer effect (ICT) and aggregate-induced emission (AIE) characteristics were synthesized by amino-aldehyde condensation reaction between 2,5-bis(2-methoxyethoxy)terephthalohydrazide (BMTH)/ 1,3,5-tris(p-formylphenyl)benzene (TFPB) and 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tribenzaldehyde (TFPT). By changing TFPT' content in TFPT[X]-BMTH-COFs, the ICT and AIE of TFPT[X]-BMTH-COFs can be controlled, and accordingly the response to trace H2O can be adjusted. A H2O sensor based on TFPT[67]-BMTH-COF with a wide linear range from 0 wt% to 0.5 wt% was developed and the detection limit was 0.00007 wt%. In addition, a portable fluorescent test paper based on TFPT[67]-BMTH-COF for visual detection of trace H2O in honey samples and salt was constructed. This work has important guiding significance for the development of fluorescent probes for the visual detection of trace water.

Bell pepper derived nitrogen-doped carbon dots as a pH-modulated fluorescence switching sensor with high sensitivity for visual sensing of 4-nitrophenol

Recently, converting bio-waste into bio-asset and implementing a portable sensing instrument for pollutant monitoring has been highly desirable and challenging. Herein, biomass-derived nitrogen-doped carbon dots (CDs) are prepared hydrothermally and emit blue fluorescence (470 nm) with a high quantum yield of 23.2%. Significantly, CDs can serve as a pH-modulated fluorescence switching nano-sensor to detect 4-NP from 0.054 to 68 μM with low detection limit (LOD, 54 nM) and limit of quantification (LOQ, 181 nM) based on inner filter effect. Moreover, the satisfactory recovery of 101.8-107.5% is gained in practical sample monitoring. Furthermore, a smartphone-integrated optosensing device with CDs-based film is developed for detecting 4-NP with LOD and LOQ of 0.110 μM and 0.350 μM. Concomitantly, the practicability of this device is further validated in several crop samples with satisfactory recovery rates of 101.6-108.6%. Therefore, this work provides a reliable way and a prospective application for on-site 4-NP monitoring in food.

Fluorene-Based Fluorometric and Colorimetric Conjugated Polymers for Sensitive Detection of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol Explosive in Aqueous Medium

Nitroaromatic explosives are a class of compounds that are responsible for various health hazards and terrorist outrages. Among these, sensitive detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) explosive has always been highly desirable considering public health and national security. In this regard, three fluorene-based conjugated polymers (CP 1, CP 2, and CP 3) were synthesized through the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction and were found to be highly sensitive for fluorescence detection of TNP with detection limits of 3.2, 5.7, and 6.1 pM, respectively. Excellent selectivity of CPs toward TNP was attributed to their unique π-π interactions based on fluorescence studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The high sensitivity of CPs to TNP was attributed to the static quenching mechanism based on the photoinduced electron transfer process and was evaluated by fluorescence, UV-visible absorption, dynamic light scattering, Job's plots, the Benesi-Hildebrand plots, and DFT calculations. CPs were also used for colorimetric and real-water sample analysis for the detection of TNP explosive. Meanwhile, sensor-coated test strips were fabricated for on-site detection of TNP, which makes them convenient solid-supported sensors.

The development of fluorescent heterocyclic compounds bearing s-triazine and cyclotriphosphazene scaffolds for researching the structure–property relationship and high-efficiency amine sensing is still challenging.

Template-Free Self-Assembly of Two-Dimensional Polymers into Nano/Microstructured Materials

In the past few decades, enormous efforts have been made to synthesize covalent polymer nano/microstructured materials with specific morphologies, due to the relationship between their structures and functions. Up to now, the formation of most of these structures often requires either templates or preorganization in order to construct a specific structure before, and then the subsequent removal of previous templates to form a desired structure, on account of the lack of “self-error-correcting” properties of reversible interactions in polymers. The above processes are time-consuming and tedious. A template-free, self-assembled strategy as a “bottom-up” route to fabricate well-defined nano/microstructures remains a challenge. Herein, we introduce the recent progress in template-free, self-assembled nano/microstructures formed by covalent two-dimensional (2D) polymers, such as polymer capsules, polymer films, polymer tubes and polymer rings.
