Light-Controlled Multiconfigurational Conductance Switching in a Single 1D Metal-Organic Wire

Precise control of multiple spin states on the atomic scale presents a promising avenue for designing and realizing magnetic switches. Despite substantial progress in recent decades, the challenge of achieving control over multiconfigurational reversible switches in low-dimensional nanostructures persists. Our work demonstrates multiple, fully reversible plasmon-driven spin-crossover switches in a single π-d metal-organic chain suspended between two electrodes. The plasmonic nanocavity stimulated by external visible light allows for reversible spin crossover between low- and high-spin states of different cobalt centers within the chain. We show that the distinct spin configurations remain stable for minutes under cryogenic conditions and can be nonperturbatively detected by conductance measurements. This multiconfigurational plasmon-driven spin-crossover demonstration extends the available toolset for designing optoelectrical molecular devices based on SCO compounds.

Molecular Switch Cobalt Redox Shuttle with a Tunable Hexadentate Ligand

Strong-field hexadentate ligands were synthesized and coordinated to cobalt metal centers to result in three new low-spin to low-spin Co(III/II) redox couples. The ligand backbone has been modified with dimethyl amine groups to result in redox potential tuning of the Co(III/II) redox couples from -200 to -430 mV versus Fc^+/0. The redox couples surprisingly undergo a reversible molecular switch rearrangement from five-coordinate Co(II) to six-coordinate Co(III) despite the ligands being hexadentate. The complexes exhibit modestly faster electron self-exchange rate constants of 2.2-4.2 M^-1 s^-1 compared to the high-spin to low-spin redox couple [Co(bpy)₃]^3+/2+ at 0.27 M^-1 s^-1, which is attributed to the change in spin state being somewhat offset by this coordination switching behavior. The complexes were utilized as redox shuttles in dye-sensitized solar cells with the near-IR AP25 + D35 dye system and exhibited improved photocurrents over the [Co(bpy)₃]^3+/2+ redox shuttle (19.8 vs 18.0 mA/cm²). Future directions point toward pairing the low-spin to low-spin Co(II/III) tunable series to dyes with significantly more negative highest occupied molecular orbital potentials that absorb into the near-IR where outer sphere redox shuttles have failed to produce efficient dye regeneration.

Sterically Hindered Diarylethenes with a Benzobis(thiadiazole) Bridge: Enantiospecific Transformation and Reversible Photosuperstructures

ConspectusPhotochromic diarylethenes featuring reversible regulation by external light irradiation have attracted increasing attention in versatile applications such as logic gates, supramolecular systems, liquid crystals, and super-resolution imaging because of their outstanding bistability and fatigue resistance. However, for typical diarylethene systems, there always exist three typical unsolved issues. The first is how to modulate the bistability between the open and closed forms from the viewpoint of ethene bridge aromaticity. The second is how to decrease and avoid the photoinactive parallel conformer in order to achieve a high quantum yield, since the open form possesses the photoactive antiparallel (ap) conformation and the photoinactive parallel (p) conformation. Because of the typical rapid rotation of the flexible side aryl groups, the two conformers cannot be separated efficiently, thereby resulting in a relatively low photocyclization quantum yield. The third is how to fulfill the enantiospecific transformation with reversibility to photomodulate the chirality. Stereochemically, the ap conformer with C₂ symmetry can be further subdivided into a pair of enantiomers with P and M helicity originating from the central hexatriene moiety. Similarly, the rapid rotation can also lead to the loss of intrinsic chirality, restricting the development and application of light-driven chiroptical switches. Accordingly, it is desirable to construct a specific diarylethene system to break through these bottlenecks for real versatile applications.Our group has recently developed a unique sterically hindered diarylethene system based on benzobis(thiadiazole) as the ethene bridge for completely solving these issues. We introduce a low-aromaticity benzobis(thiadiazole) unit into the diarylethene as a central ethene bridge with incomparably high bistability. To block or freeze the rotation of flexible side aryls, we further incorporate a large bulky benzothiophene unit to induce a large steric hindrance, or rotation barrier, between the ethene bridge and side aryls, thereby successfully separating multiple conformers of the diarylethenes with high photocyclization quantum yields and enantiospecific photoreaction. Consequently, given such a fantastic building block, we enhance its performance by means of supramolecular self-assembly, thereby realizing unique conformer-dependent self-assembly as well as unprecedented concerted isomerization and enantiospecific photoreaction of photoresponsive metallacycles. In addition, decoration of the intrinsically chiral diarylethenes with mesogenic units can enable us to manipulate the helical superstructure of liquid crystals, thus achieving a multiple anticounterfeiting technique and a quadridimensional manipulable laser. We also unravel the dual aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of the sterically hindered diarylethene, especially as applied in super-resolution imaging.

Low-Coordinate Erbium(III) Single-Molecule Magnets with Photochromic Behavior

The structures and magnetic properties of photoresponsive magnets can be controlled or fine-tuned by visible light irradiation, which makes them appealing as candidates for ternary memory devices: photochromic and photomagnetic at the same time. One of the strategies for photoresponsive magnetic systems is the use of photochromic/photoswitchable molecules coordinated to paramagnetic metal centers to indirectly influence their magnetic properties. Herein, we present two erbium(III)-based coordination systems: a trinuclear molecule {[Er^III(BHT)₃]₃(dtepy)₂}^.4C₅H₁₂ (1) and a 1D coordination chain {[Er^III(BHT)₃(azopy)}_n·2C₅H₁₂ (2), where the bridging photochromic ligands belong to the class of diarylethenes: 1,2-bis((2-methyl-5-pyridyl)thie-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (dtepy) and 4,4′-azopyridine (azopy), respectively (BHT = 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate). Both compounds show slow dynamics of magnetization, typical for single-molecule magnets (SMMs) as revealed by alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements. The trinuclear compound 1 also shows an immediate color change from yellow to dark blue in response to near-UV irradiation. Such behavior is typical for the photoisomerization of the open form of the ligand into its closed form. The color change can be reversed by exposing the closed form to visible light. The chain-like compound 2, on the other hand, does not show significant signs of the expected trans–cis photoisomerization of the azopyridine in response to UV irradiation and does not appear to show photoswitching behavior.

Three-coordinate [Er^III(BHT)₃] single ion magnets undergo ligand addition reaction in pentane to form linear trinuclear photochromic nanomagnets where both functionalities persist.
