Tribocatalysis: challenges and perspectives

Degradation of dye through mechano-catalysis using BaBi4Ti4O15 catalyst

Ferroelectric BaBi4Ti4O15 was prepared using solid-state calcination at 950 °C for four hours. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized to understand its microstructure and other structural aspects. Particle size was around < 1.5 µm. This oxide is able to demonstrate piezocatalysis and tribocatalysis as reflected in its dye degradation performance. This oxide showed piezocatalytic activity around 40% in 2 h and tribocatalytic activity around 90% in 12 h. The rate constant for the piezocatalytic reaction is 0.003 min-1 and for tribocatalytic reaction is 0.169 h-1. The rotation speed also affected the tribocatalytic activity of the oxide. Oxide showed 25%, 90%, and 94% tribocatalytic activity at 300, 500, and 700 rpm respectively. This material has demonstrated notable performance of catalysis under different types of mechanical energy sources and under different mechanisms.

Surprising Effects of Ti and Al2O3 Coatings on Tribocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes by GaN Nanoparticles

GaN is more stable than most metal oxide semiconductors for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in harsh conditions, while its catalytic efficiency has been difficult to be substantially improved. In this study, the tribocatalytic degradation of organic dyes by GaN nanoparticles has been investigated. Stimulated through magnetic stirring using homemade Teflon magnetic rotary disks in glass beakers, the GaN nanoparticles were found to induce negligible degradation in rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) solutions. Surprisingly, the degradation was greatly enhanced in beakers with Ti and Al2O3 coatings on their bottoms: 99.2% and 99.8% of the 20 mg/L RhB solutions were degraded in 3 h for the Ti and Al2O3 coatings, respectively, and 56% and 60.2% of the 20 mg/L MO solutions were degraded in 24 h for the Ti and Al2O3 coatings, respectively. Moreover, the MO molecules were only broken into smaller organic molecules for the Ti coating, while they were completely degraded for the Al2O3 coating. These findings are important for the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants by GaN in harsh environments and for achieving a better understanding of tribocatalysis as well.

Catalyst-free contact-electro-catalytic H2O2 synthesis via simple combination of a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) stir bar and ultrasound

Herein, we present a catalyst-free contact-electro-catalytic method for synthesizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by combining continuous agitation with a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) stir bar and ultrasonication. A high H2O2 production rate of 256.6 μM h-1 is achieved under ambient conditions without adding particle catalysts and sacrificial agents, which is competitive with recent advancements in redox technology. Eco-friendliness, convenience and efficiency make this process a promising alternative method for H2O2 synthesis.

The emerging chemistry of self-electrified water interfaces

Water is known for dissipating electrostatic charges, but it is also a universal agent of matter electrification, creating charged domains in any material contacting or containing it. This new role of water was discovered during the current century. It is proven in a fast-growing number of publications reporting direct experimental measurements of excess charge and electric potential. It is indirectly verified by its success in explaining surprising phenomena in chemical synthesis, electric power generation, metastability, and phase transition kinetics. Additionally, electrification by water is opening the way for developing green technologies that are fully compatible with the environment and have great potential to contribute to sustainability. Electrification by water shows that polyphasic matter is a charge mosaic, converging with the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars effect, which was discovered one century ago but is still often ignored. Electrified sites in a real system are niches showing various local electrochemical potentials for the charged species. Thus, the electrified mosaics display variable chemical reactivity and mass transfer patterns. Water contributes to interfacial electrification from its singular structural, electric, mixing, adsorption, and absorption properties. A long list of previously unexpected consequences of interfacial electrification includes: "on-water" reactions of chemicals dispersed in water that defy current chemical wisdom; reactions in electrified water microdroplets that do not occur in bulk water, transforming the droplets in microreactors; and lowered surface tension of water, modifying wetting, spreading, adhesion, cohesion, and other properties of matter. Asymmetric capacitors charged by moisture and water are now promising alternative equipment for simultaneously producing electric power and green hydrogen, requiring only ambient thermal energy. Changing surface tension by interfacial electrification also modifies phase-change kinetics, eliminating metastability that is the root of catastrophic electric discharges and destructive explosions. It also changes crystal habits, producing needles and dendrites that shorten battery life. These recent findings derive from a single factor, water's ability to electrify matter, touching on the most relevant aspects of chemistry. They create tremendous scientific opportunities to understand the matter better, and a new chemistry based on electrified interfaces is now emerging.

Single-atom alloy Ir/Ni catalyst boosts CO2 methanation via mechanochemistry

A new catalytic approach is pioneered to achieve CO₂ methanation via a single atom alloy Ir/Ni catalyst using a ball-milling method. This Ir/Ni catalyst exhibits a TOF_CH4 of 10244 h^-1 and a 220 h lifetime at 350 °C without deactivation, illustrating excellent catalytic efficiency in the presence of mechanical energy.

Strong Tribocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation of Graphite Carbon Nitride g-C3N4 through Harvesting Friction Energy

Mechanical energy derived from friction is a kind of clean energy which is ubiquitous in nature. In this research, two-dimensional graphite carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) is successfully applied to the conversion of nitrogen (N₂) fixation through collecting the mechanical energy generated from the friction between a g-C₃N₄ catalyst and a stirring rod. At the stirring speed of 1000 r/min, the tribocatalytic ammonia radical (NH₄⁺) generation rate of g-C₃N₄ can achieve 100.56 μmol·L⁻¹·g⁻¹·h⁻¹ using methanol as a positive charge scavenger, which is 3.91 times higher than that without any scavengers. Meanwhile, ammonia is not generated without a catalyst or contact between the g-C₃N₄ catalyst and the stirring rod. The tribocatalytic effect originates from the friction between the g-C₃N₄ catalyst and the stirring rod which results in the charges transfer crossing the contact interface, then the positive and negative charges remain on the catalyst and the stirring rod respectively, which can further react with the substance dissolved in the reaction solution to achieve the conversion of N₂ to ammonia. The effects of number and stirring speed of the rods on the performance of g-C₃N₄ tribocatalytic N₂ fixation are further investigated. This excellent and efficient tribocatalysis can provide a potential avenue towards harvesting the mechanical energy in a natural environment.
