Substituent engineering in g-C3N4/COF heterojunctions for rapid charge separation and high photo-redox activity

Non-radical activation of persulfate with Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4 for efficient degradation of propranolol under visible light

Non-radical activation of persulfate (PS) by photocatalysts is an effective approach for removing organic pollutants from aqueous environments. In this study, a novel Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4 heterojunction was synthesized using a facile solvothermal approach and used for the first time for non-radical activation of PS to degrade propranolol (PRO) in the presence of visible light. The findings found that the degradation rate of PRO in the Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4/PS system was significantly increased from 19% to more than 90% within 90 min compared to the Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4 system. This indicated that the composite system exerted an excellent synergistic effect between the photocatalyst and the persulfate-based oxygenation. Quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that the non-radical pathway with singlet oxygen as the active species played a major role in the photocatalytic process. The existence of photo-generated holes during the reaction could also be directly involved in the oxidation of pollutants. Meanwhile, a possible PRO degradation pathway was also proposed. Furthermore, the impacts of pH, humic acid and common anions on the PRO degradation by the Bi2O3/BiO1.3I0.4/PS were explored, and the system's stability and reusability were also studied. This study exhibits a highly productive catalyst for PS activation via a non-radical pathway and provides a new idea for the degradation of PRO.

Hydrophilicity and Pore Structure Enhancement in Polyurethane/Silk Protein-Bismuth Halide Oxide Composite Films for Photocatalytic Degradation of Dye

Polyurethane/silk protein-bismuth halide oxide composite films were fabricated using a blending-wet phase transformationin situsynthesis method. The crystal structure, micromorphology, and optical properties were conducted using XRD, SEM, and UV-Vis DRS characterize techniques. The results indicated that loaded silk protein enhanced the hydrophilicity and pore structure of the polyurethane composite films. The active species BiOX were observed to grow as nanosheets with high dispersion on the internal skeleton and silk protein surface of the polyurethane-silk protein film. The photocatalytic efficiency of BiOX/PU-SF composite films was assessed through the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. Among the tested films, the BiOBr/PU-SF composite exhibited the highest removal rate of RhB at 98.9%, surpassing the removal rates of 93.7% for the BiOCl/PU-SF composite and 85.6% for the BiOI/PU-SF composite. Furthermore, an active species capture test indicated that superoxide radical (•O2-) and hole (h+) species played a predominant role in the photodegradation process.

Enhancement of Mass Transfer Process for Photocatalytic Reduction in Cr(VI) by Electric Field Assistance

The removal of Cr(VI), a highly-toxic heavy metal, from industrial wastewater is a critical issue in water treatment research. Photocatalysis, a promising technology to solve the Cr(VI) pollution problem, requires urgent and continuous improvement to enhance its performance. To address this need, an electric field-assisted photocatalytic system (PCS) was proposed to meet the growing demand for industrial wastewater treatment. Firstly, we selected PAF-54, a nitrogen-rich porous organic polymer, as the PCS's catalytic material. PAF-54 exhibits a large adsorption capacity (189 mg/g) for Cr(VI) oxyanions through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. It was then coated on carbon paper (CP) and used as the photocatalytic electrode. The synergy between capacitive deionization (CDI) and photocatalysis significantly promotes the photoreduction of Cr(VI). The photocatalytic performance was enhanced due to the electric field's influence on the mass transfer process, which could strengthen the enrichment of Cr(VI) oxyanions and the repulsion of Cr(III) cations on the surface of PAF-54/CP electrode. In addition, the PCS system demonstrates excellent recyclability and stability, making it a promising candidate for chromium wastewater treatment.

Polysaccharide nanocomposites in wastewater treatment: A review

In modern times, wastewater treatment is vital due to increased water contamination arising from pollutants such as nutrients, pathogens, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical residues. Polysaccharides (PSAs) are natural, renewable, and non-toxic biopolymers used in wastewater treatment in the field of gas separation, liquid filtration, adsorption processes, pervaporation, and proton exchange membranes. Since addition of nanoparticles to PSAs improves their sustainability and strength, nanocomposite PSAs has gained significant attention for wastewater treatment in the past decade. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of PSA-based nanocomposites used for efficient wastewater treatment, focusing on adsorption, photocatalysis, and membrane-based methods. It also discusses potential future applications, challenges, and opportunities in adsorption, filtration, and photocatalysis. Recently, PSAs have shown promise as adsorbents in biological-based systems, effectively removing heavy metals that could hinder microbial activity. Cellulose-mediated adsorbents have successfully removed various pollutants from wastewater, including heavy metals, dyes, oil, organic solvents, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues. Thus, PSA nanocomposites would support biological processes in wastewater treatment plants. A major concern is the discharge of antibiotic wastes from pharmaceutical industries, posing significant environmental and health risks. PSA-mediated bio-adsorbents, like clay polymeric nanocomposite hydrogel beads, efficiently remove antibiotics from wastewater, ensuring water quality and ecosystem balance. The successful use of PSA-mediated bio-adsorbents in wastewater treatment depends on ongoing research to optimize their application and evaluate their potential environmental impacts. Implementing these eco-friendly adsorbents on a large scale holds great promise in significantly reducing water pollution, safeguarding ecosystems, and protecting human health.

Accelerated electron and mass transfer through constructing H2WO4/Ti3C2/g-C3N4 Z-scheme photocatalyst for environmental remediation

The catalytic efficiency of photocatalysts highly depends on electron transport and mass transfer. Herein, we designed and prepared an effective H2WO4/Ti3C2/g-C3N4 (HTC) Z-scheme heterojunction through interfacial engineering strategy. The results manifested that 97.4% of Cr(VI) (80 μM, 50 mL) could be removed by HTC heterojunction within 10 min under visible light irradiation. The reduction rate constant of Cr(VI) for H2WO4/g-C3N4 (HC) heterojunction increased by a factor of 21 after introducing the conductive Ti3C2. Moreover, 96% of tetracycline (TC, 10 mg L-1, 50 mL) could be degraded by HTC heterojunction within 30 min. The electronic conductivity and ionic diffusion coefficient of HC heterojunction increased by a factor of 64 and 1064 after adding Ti3C2, respectively. This result indicated that the introduction of highly conductive Ti3C2 significantly improved the electron and mass transfer of the heterojunction. Meanwhile, the HCT heterojunction displayed favorable photocurrent, and keep excellent photostability during the long-term test. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the internal electric field (IEF) from g-C3N4 to H2WO4 in HCT heterojunction promotes the combination of the photoinduced electrons in the H2WO4 conduction band (CB) with photoinduced holes in the g-C3N4 valence band (VB), thus accelerating the charge transfer in the HCT Z-scheme heterojunction. The antibacterial efficiency of HTC heterojunction against E. coli and S. aureus could reach up to 98.4% and 99.7%, respectively. The degradation intermediates and the potential degradation mechanism of TC were analyzed and proposed based on the results of HPLC-MS analysis. Moreover, the toxicity of TC and degradation intermediates were estimated by Toxicity Estimation Software (T.E.S.T.) based on quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR). This work provided a valuable guideline for designing the effective MXene-based Z-scheme heterojunction for environmental remediation.

The strong interaction and confinement effect of Ag@NH2-MIL-88B for improving the conversion and durability of photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction in the presence of a hole scavenger

Selectively regulating active factors in photocatalytic reactions by designing materials is one of the very important factors. Herein, we prepared spindle-like core-shell Ag@NH₂-MIL-88B composites (Ag@NM-88) by a two-step hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Ag@NM-88 displayed superior photocatalytic activity for Cr(VI) reduction under LED light, compared with the activities of pure NH₂-MIL-88B (NM-88) and Ag/NM-88 (Ag was deposited on NH₂-MIL-88B). The core-shell structure Ag@NM-88 was not only beneficial to the absorption of light but also beneficial to the separation of photogenerated e^- and h⁺. More importantly, it was further confirmed by active radical capture experiments and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) conversion experiments that the design of the core-shell structure could effectively prevent photogenerated e^- from combing with O₂ to form •O₂^-, so that photogenerated e^- directly reduced Cr(VI), thereby improving the reaction rate. In addition, it could still maintain good stability after 5 cycles, indicating that the construction of a core-shell structure is also conducive to improving stability. This work provides a strategy for selectively regulating the active components of photocatalysts, and provides new insights into the relationship between interfacial charge transfer and molecular oxygen activation in photocatalytic reduction Cr(VI) systems.

Ferric-ellagate complex: A promising multifunctional photocatalyst

The semiconductors have exhibited great potential in the field of photocatalytic energy production, environmental remediation and bactericidal. Nevertheless, those inorganic semiconductors are still restricted in commercial application due to the drawbacks of easy agglomeration and low solar energy conversion efficiency. Herein, ellagic acid (EA) based metal-organic complexes (MOCs) were synthesized through a facile stirring process at room temperature with Fe³⁺, Bi³⁺ and Ce³⁺ as the metal center. The EA-Fe photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic activity toward Cr(VI) reduction, where Cr(VI) were completely removed within 20 min. Meanwhile, EA-Fe also displayed good photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants and photocatalytic bactericidal performance. The photodegradation rates of TC and RhB by EA-Fe were 15 and 5 times that by bare EA, respectively. Moreover, EA-Fe was capable of effectively eliminating both E. coli and S. aureus bacteria. It was found that EA-Fe was capable of generating superoxide radicals, which could participate in the reduction of heavy metals, degradation of organic contaminants and inactivation of bacteria. A photocatalysis-self-Fenton system could be established by EA-Fe solely. This work would provide a new insight for designing multifunctional MOCs with high photocatalytic efficiency.

Synergistic effect of double Schottky potential well and oxygen vacancy for enhanced plasmonic photocatalytic U(VI) reduction

Plasmonic photocatalysis is an effective strategy to solve radioactive uranium hazards in wastewater. A plasmonic photocatalyst Bi/Bi₂O_3-x@COFs was synthesized by in-situ growth of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) on Bi/Bi₂O_3-x surface for the U(VI) adsorption and plasmonic photoreduction in rare earth tailings wastewater. The presence of oxygen vacancy in Bi/Bi₂O_3-x and Schottky potential well formed by Bi and Bi₂O_3-x interface increased the number of free electrons, which induced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and enhanced the light absorption performance of composites. In addition, oxygen vacancy improved the Fermi level of Bi/Bi₂O_3-x, leading to another potential well between Bi₂O_3-x and COFs interface. The electron transport direction was reversed, thus increasing the electron density of COFs layer. COFs was an N-type semiconductor with specific binding U(VI) groups and suitable band structure, which could be used as an active reaction site. Bi/Bi₂O_3-x@COFs had 1411.5 mg g^-1 removal capacity and high separation coefficient for U(VI) due to the synergistic action of photogenerated electrons and hot electrons. Moreover, the removal rate of uranium from rare earth tailings wastewater by regenerated Bi/Bi₂O_3-x@COFs was over 93.9%. The scheme of introducing LSPR and Schottky potential well provides another way to improve the photocatalytic effect.

PDINH bridged NH2-UiO-66(Zr) Z-scheme heterojunction for promoted photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction and antibacterial activity

Z-scheme mechanism was a promising approach to considerably enhance photocatalytic activity. In this work, the PDINH/NH₂-UiO-66(Zr) (PNU) heterojunctions were made using a facile ball-milling method. As expect, the optimum PNU-1 composite acted as highly active photocatalyst with 97% Cr(VI) to be reduced within 60 min of LED light illumination. Moreover, the antibacterial rate almost reached 100% for E. coli and S. aureus in 4 h, which was more conspicuous than the others. The wider light absorption range, promoted charge separation because of Z-scheme mechanism and efficient generation of reactive ¹O₂, •O₂^-, and •OH contributed greatly to the enhanced photocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the superior stability and repeatability of the composites were also demonstrated by five cyclic experiments and related physicochemical characterizations. Therefore, this work provides a novel insight for designing high-efficiency Z-scheme heterostructures between MOFs and organic PDINH for wastewater remediation.

Highly selective electrochemical impedance spectroscopy-based graphene electrode for rapid detection of microplastics

The widespread occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems that caused environmental pollution has attracted worldwide attention. Herein, graphene electrode was initially derived from petroleum waste. Then the electrochemical responses of the electrode were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) toward polystyrene (PS) under various optimum conditions. For the quantitative measurement of PS concentration, principal component analysis (PCA) score images displayed that the data points offered the best discrimination of the classes, and singular value decomposition (SVD) showed that a good linearity was achieved between Z"u(1) and lgC_ps in the concentration range of 0.01-25 mg L^-1. Especially for PS with particle size of 1 μm, the highest correlation coefficient (R² = 0.9914) was obtained. The sensor ability to determine the polystyrene concentration in real samples was evaluated with the recovery of 98.4-113.3 % and reliable reproducibility (RSD < 9.72 %). For the quantitative measurement of the particle size of PS, SVD images exhibited that a linearity was obtained between Z'u(1)and lgD_ps in the particle size range of 0.08-20 μm. A good linearity with R² = 0.9877 was obtained when the concentration was 1 mg L^-1. The recovery was in the range of 100.8-118.0 % with the RSD < 6.38 %. Therefore, a novel method is established for the rapid detection of PS MPs.

Extending the visible light absorption of NH2-UiO-66 through diazotization reaction for photocatalytic chromium (VI) reduction

The optical properties of NH₂-UiO-66 as a visible light-active metal organic framework was further enhanced through the diazotization reaction with π-conjugated 1-naphthol reagent. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectrum of diazotized MOF, named as Azo-UiO-66, exhibited a significant red shift compared to unfunctionalized NH₂-UiO-66 due to the formation of diazo compound. Also, Tauc calculations indicated considerable decrease in band gap energy from 2.68 to 1.7 eV, resulting in improvement of visible light harvesting. Furthermore, other physicochemical techniques, e.g., X-ray diffraction (XRD), N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energ-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and CHN elemental analyses demonstrated the successful MOF diazotization with 1-naphthol and preservation of NH₂-UiO-66 framework upon post-modification process. The reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), as a serious contaminant in wastewater to less toxic Cr(III) was performed over prepared photocatalyst, which demonstrated the positive role of ligand functionalization and enhancement of visible light absorption on overall photocatalytic performance of Azo-UiO-66.

Exceptional visible-light photoelectrocatalytic activity of dual Z-scheme Bi@BiOI-Bi2O3/C3N4 heterojunction for simultaneous remediation of Cr(VI) and phenol

Developing highly efficient and stable photocatalysts remains a major challenge for the remediation of environmental pollutants. In this work, the Bi⁰ decorated BiOI-Bi₂O₃/C₃N₄ heterojunction (Bi@BiOI-Bi₂O₃/C₃N₄) film was fabricated through ultrasonic stripping, I^- etching and in situ UV-reduction processes and then characterized thoroughly by various analytical techniques. The characteristics of simultaneous mitigation of phenol and Cr(VI) were evaluated over Bi@BiOI-Bi₂O₃/C₃N₄ photoanode under visible light. The results exhibited that both phenol and Cr(VI) were removed completely by the photoanode at 2.5 V within 1.5 h, superior to our previous report. The synergy of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi⁰ and ternary heterojunction accelerated the separation and transfer of photo-induced charge carrier and thus heavily promoted the removal efficiency. Moreover, the excellent stability of this photoanode was hold with no considerably activity attenuation after 4 cycles. Finally, a dual Z-scheme charge transfer process was presented. This work offers an attractive pathway to construct highly active photoelectrode with promising application for simultaneous remediation of organics and heavy metals in wastewater.

Experimental Study on Kinetics and Mechanism of Ciprofloxacin Degradation in Aqueous Phase Using Ag-TiO2/rGO/Halloysite Photocatalyst

In this study, Ag-TiO2/rGO/halloysite nanotubes were synthesised from natural sources using a simple method. The material was characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, BET, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis DRS techniques. The as-synthesised material has a sandwich-like shape, with the active phase distributed evenly over the rGO/HNT support. Compared to pure TiO2, the material has a lower band gap energy (~2.7 eV) and a suitable specific surface area (~80 m2/g), making it able to participate effectively in the photochemical degradation of pollutants. The catalyst showed exceptional activity in the degradation of CIP antibiotics in water, achieving a conversion of about 90% after 5 h of irradiation at an initial CIP concentration of 20 ppm. This efficiency was significantly higher than that of pure TiO2 and Ag-TiO2, which could prove the important effect of the support and silver doping. The results of the experiments show that the process follows a pseudo-first-order kinetic model in the case of (1%)Ag wt. and pseudo-second-order in the case of (3%)Ag wt., which could be explained by the aggregation of silver and the increasing role of chemisorption. Tests with radical scavengers showed that the •OH radical had the greatest effect on CIP decomposition, while •O2− had the least. The neutral pH value and the high degree of mineralisation (approx. 80%) confirm the potential of the material for use in wastewater treatment.

Enhanced Performance of Flexible Organic Photovoltaics Based on MoS2 Micro-Nano Array

In this work, we investigated the influence of MoS₂ functioning as an electron transport layer (ETL) on the inverted flexible organic photovoltaics (FOPVs). Three ETLs, including MoS₂, lithium quinolate (Liq), and a MoS₂/Liq bilayer, were evaporated onto ITO-integrated polyethylene terephthalate substrates (PET-ITO), and the properties of transmittance, water contact angle, and reflectivity of the films were analyzed. The results revealed that MoS₂ was helpful to improve the lipophilicity of the surface of the ETL, which was conducive to the deposition of the active layer. In addition, the reflectivity of MoS₂ to the light ranging from 400 to 600 nm was the largest among the pristine PET-ITO substrate and the PET-ITO coated with three ETLs, which promoted the efficient use of the light. The efficiency of the FOPV with MoS₂/Liq ETL was 73% higher than that of the pristine device. This was attributed to the nearly two-fold amplification of the MoS₂ array to the light field, which promoted the FOPV to absorb more light. Moreover, the efficiency of the FOPV with MoS₂ was maintained under different illumination angles and bending angles. The results demonstrate the promising applications of MoS₂ in the fabrication of FOPVs.

Polymorphic Covalent Organic Frameworks: Molecularly Defined Pore Structures and Iodine Adsorption Property

Radioactive iodine-capturing materials are urgently needed for the emerging challenges in nuclear waste disposal. The various pore structures of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) render them promising candidates for efficient iodine adsorption. However, the detailed structure-property relationship of COFs in iodine adsorption remains elusive. Herein, two polymorphic COFs with significantly different crystalline structures are obtained based on the same building blocks with varied molecular ratios. The two COFs both have high crystallinity, high specific surface area, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. Compared with the [C₄+C₄] topology (PyT-2) with an AA stacking form, the [C₄+C₂] topology (PyT-1) with an AB stacking form has more twisted pore channels and complex ink-bottle pores. At ambient conditions, PyT-1 and PyT-2 both exhibit good adsorption properties for iodine capture either in a gaseous or liquid medium. Remarkably, PyT-1 presents an excellent maximum adsorption capacity (0.635 g g^-1), and the adsorption limit of PyT-2 is 0.445 g g^-1 in an n-hexane solution with an iodine concentration of 400 mg L^-1, which is highly comparable to the state-of-the-art iodine absorption performance. This study provides a guide for the future molecular design strategy toward novel iodine adsorbents.

Study on the photocatalytic properties differences between the 1-D and 3-D W18O49 particles†

The morphology of W₁₈O₄₉ catalysts has a significant effect on their photocatalytic performance. Herein, we successfully prepared two commonly used W₁₈O₄₉ photocatalysts just by changing the reaction temperature in the hydrothermal system, namely 1-D W₁₈O₄₉ nanowires (1-D W₁₈O₄₉) and 3-D urchin-like W₁₈O₄₉ particles (3-D W₁₈O₄₉), and evaluated the difference of their photocatalytic performances by taking the degradation of methylene blue (MB) as an example. Remarkably, 3-D W₁₈O₄₉ exhibited an impressive photocatalytic degradation performance towards MB with photocatalytic reaction rates of 0.00932 min⁻¹, which was about 3 times higher than that of 1-D W₁₈O₄₉. The comprehensive characterization and control experiments could further reveal that the hierarchical structure of 3-D W₁₈O₄₉ brought higher BET surface areas, stronger light harvesting, faster separation of photogenerated charges and so on, which was the main reason for its better photocatalytic performance. ESR results confirmed that the main active substances were superoxide radicals (˙O₂⁻) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH). This work aims to explore the intrinsic relationship between the morphology and photocatalytic properties of W₁₈O₄₉ catalysts, so as to provide a theoretical basis in the morphology selection of W₁₈O₄₉ or its composite materials in the field of photocatalysis.

Efficient and Stable Catalytic Hydrogen Evolution of ZrO2/CdSe-DETA Nanocomposites under Visible Light

Composite photocatalysts are crucial for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this work, ZrO2/CdSe-diethylenetriamine (ZrO2/CdSe-DETA) heterojunction nanocomposites are synthesized, and efficiently and stably catalyzed hydrogen evolution under visible light. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) confirm the formation of heterojunctions between ZrO2 (ZO) and CdSe-DETA (CS). Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), Mott–Schottky, and theoretical calculations confirm that the mechanism at the heterojunction of the ZrO2/CdSe-DETA (ZO/CS) nanocomposites is Type-I. Among the ZO/CS nanocomposites (ZO/CS-0.4, ZO/CS-0.6, and ZO/CS-0.8; in the nanocomposites, the mass ratio of ZO to CS is 0.1:0.0765, 0.1:0.1148, and 0.1:0.1531, respectively). ZO/CS-0.6 nanocomposite has the best photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (4.27 mmol g−1 h−1), which is significantly higher than ZO (trace) and CS (1.75 mmol g−1 h−1). Within four cycles, the ZO/CS-0.6 nanocomposite maintains an efficient catalytic hydrogen evolution rate. Due to the existence of the heterojunction of the composites, the photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be effectively separated, which accelerates the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction and reduces the progress of photocorrosion. This work reveals the feasibility of ZO/CS nanocomposite photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

Natural Sunlight Photocatalytic Synthesis of Benzoxazole-Bridged Covalent Organic Framework for Photocatalysis

Although natural sunlight-mediated photocatalysis is a clean, efficient, and green approach to access organic products, its application in the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), however, is still unprecedented. Herein, we first report the sunlight photocatalytic synthesis of COF under ambient conditions. Furthermore, this "window ledge" reaction generated benzoxazole-linked COF is stable and can be applied as a reusable photocatalyst to highly promote visible-light-driven aerobic oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. These results not only enrich the COF synthetic methodology but also open a new route to access COFs in a green and sustainable way.
