Identification of the visco-hyperelastic properties of brain white matter based on the combination of inverse method and experiment

The mechanical behavior of bovine spinal cord white matter under various strain rate conditions: tensile testing and visco-hyperelastic constitutive modeling

The mechanical behavior of the white matter is important for estimating the damage of the spinal cord during accidents. In this study, we conducted uniaxial tension testing in vitro of bovine spinal cord white matter under extremely high strain rate conditions (up to 100 s^-1). A visco-hyperelastic constitutive law for modeling the strain rate-dependent behavior of the bovine spinal cord white matter was developed. A set of material constants was obtained using a Levenberg-Marquardt fitting algorithm to match the uniaxial tension experimental data with various strain rates. Our experimental data confirmed that the modulus and tensile strength increased when the strain rate is higher. For the extremely high strain rate condition (100 s^-1), we found that both the modulus and failure stress significantly increased compared with the low strain rate case. These new data in terms of mechanical response at high strain rate provide insight into the spine injury mechanism caused by high-speed impact. Moreover, the developed constitutive model will allow researchers to perform more realistic finite element modeling and simulation of spinal cord injury damage under various complicated conditions.

Identification of Hyperelastic Material Parameters of Elastomers by Reverse Engineering Approach

Simulating the mechanical behavior of rubbers is widely performed with hyperelastic material models by determining their parameters. Traditionally, several loading modes, namely uniaxial tensile, planar equibiaxial, and volumetric, are considered to identify hyperelastic material models. This procedure is mainly used to determine hyperelastic material parameters accurately. On the contrary, using reverse engineering approaches, iterative finite element analyses, artificial neural networks, and virtual field methods to identify hyperelastic material parameters can provide accurate results that require no coupon material testing. In the current study, hyperelastic material parameters of selected rubbers (neoprene, silicone, and natural rubbers) were determined using an artificial neural network (ANN) model. Finite element analyses of O-ring tension and O-ring compression were simulated to create a data set to train the ANN model. Then, the ANN model was employed to identify the hyperelastic material parameters of the selected rubbers. Our study demonstrated that hyperelastic material parameters of any rubbers could be obtained directly from component experimental data without performing coupon tests.

Tissue-Scale Biomechanical Testing of Brain Tissue for the Calibration of Nonlinear Material Models

Brain tissue is one of the most complex and softest tissues in the human body. Due to its ultrasoft and biphasic nature, it is difficult to control the deformation state during biomechanical testing and to quantify the highly nonlinear, time-dependent tissue response. In numerous experimental studies that have investigated the mechanical properties of brain tissue over the last decades, stiffness values have varied significantly. One reason for the observed discrepancies is the lack of standardized testing protocols and corresponding data analyses. The tissue properties have been tested on different length and time scales depending on the testing technique, and the corresponding data have been analyzed based on simplifying assumptions. In this review, we highlight the advantage of using nonlinear continuum mechanics based modeling and finite element simulations to carefully design experimental setups and protocols as well as to comprehensively analyze the corresponding experimental data. We review testing techniques and protocols that have been used to calibrate material model parameters and discuss artifacts that might falsify the measured properties. The aim of this work is to provide standardized procedures to reliably quantify the mechanical properties of brain tissue and to more accurately calibrate appropriate constitutive models for computational simulations of brain development, injury and disease. Computational models can not only be used to predictively understand brain tissue behavior, but can also serve as valuable tools to assist diagnosis and treatment of diseases or to plan neurosurgical procedures. © 2022 The Authors. Visco-hyperelastic characterization of human brain white matter micro-level constituents in different strain rates

In this study, we propose a computational characterization technique for obtaining the material properties of axons and extracellular matrix (ECM) in human brain white matter. To account for the dynamic behavior of the brain tissue, data from time-dependent relaxation tests of human brain white matter in different strain rates are extracted and formulated by a visco-hyperelastic constitutive model consisting of the Ogden hyperelastic model and the Prony series expansion. Through micromechanical finite element simulation, a derivative-free optimization framework designed to minimize the difference between the numerical and experimental data is used to identify the material properties of the axons and ECM. The Prony series expansion parameters of axons and ECM are found to be highly affected by the Prony series expansion coefficients of the brain white matter. The optimal parameters of axons and ECM are verified through micromechanical simulation by comparing the averaged numerical response with that of the experimental data. Moreover, the initial shear modulus and the reduced shear modulus of the axons are found for different strain rates of 0.0001, 0.01, and 1 s^-1. Consequently, first- and second-order regressions are used to find relations for the prediction of the shear modulus at the intermediate strain rates. Load Identification Method Based on Interval Analysis and Tikhonov Regularization and Its Application

In order to study the dynamic force identification method of an end-plate pick of shearer, a dynamic force identification technique based on interval theory was proposed. The dynamic force interval identification model is established by describing and quantifying the identified parameters. By using the interval analysis method of the first-order Taylor expansion, the dynamic force identification is transformed into two kinds of deterministic inverse problems at the midpoint of the uncertain parameter and its gradient identification. The Tikhonov regularization method is used to solve two kinds of deterministic problems, and the upper and lower boundaries of dynamic force of the end-plate pick are determined. The results show that the deviations between the identified dynamic force and the actual dynamic force are basically within 2% and 5%, and the average uncertainties are up to 7% and 10%. Therefore, the proposed method can effectively determine the upper and lower boundaries of dynamic force of the end-plate pick, improve the solving efficiency, and provide a new research method for studying the coal rock mechanism of the pick cutting load.
