Abstract
Noninvasive in situ monitoring of viscoelastic characteristics of corneal tissue at elevated temperatures is pivotal for mechanical property-informed refractive surgery techniques, including thermokeratoplasty and photorefractive keratectomy, requiring precise thermal modifications of the corneal structure during these surgical procedures. This study harnesses Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy as a biosensing platform to noninvasively probe the viscoelastic properties of ovine corneas across a temperature range of 25-64 °C. By submerging the tissue samples in silicone oil, consistent hydration and immiscibility are maintained, allowing for their accurate sensing of temperature-dependent mechanical behaviors. We identify significant phase transitions in the corneal tissue, particularly beyond 40 °C, likely due to collagen unfolding, marking the beginning of thermal destabilization. A subsequent transition, observed beyond 60 °C, correlates with collagen denaturation. These phase transformations highlight the cornea's sensitivity to both physiologically reversible and irreversible viscoelastic changes induced by mild to high temperatures. Our findings underscore the potential of the Brillouin biosensing technique for real-time diagnostics of corneal biomechanics during refractive surgeries to attain optimized therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract
Background Glaucoma is multifactorial, but the interrelationship between risk factors and structural changes remains unclear. Here, we adjusted for confounding factors in glaucoma patients with differing risk factors, and compared differences in structure and susceptible areas in the optic disc and macula. Methods In 458 eyes with glaucoma, we determined confounding factors for intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), axial length (AL), LSFG-measured ocular blood flow (OBF), which was assessed with laser speckle flowgraphy-measured mean blur rate in the tissue area (MT) of the optic nerve head, biological antioxidant potential (BAP), and systemic abnormalities in diastolic blood pressure (dBP). To compensate for measurement bias, we also analyzed corrected IOP (cIOP; corrected for CCT) and corrected MT (cMT; corrected for age, weighted retinal ganglion cell count, and AL). Then, we determined the distribution of these parameters in low-, middle-, and high-value subgroups and compared them with the Kruskal–Wallis test. Pairwise comparisons used the Steel–Dwass test. Results The high-cIOP subgroup had significantly worse mean deviation (MD), temporal, superior, and inferior loss of circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (cpRNFLT), and large cupping. The low-CCT subgroup had temporal cpRNFLT loss; the high-CCT subgroup had low cup volume. The high-AL subgroup had macular ganglion cell complex thickness (GCCT) loss; the low-AL subgroup had temporal cpRNFLT loss. The high-systemic-dBP subgroup had worse MD, total, superior, and inferior cpRNFLT loss and macular GCCT loss. The low-BAP subgroup had more male patients, higher dBP, and cpRNFLT loss in the 10 o’clock area. The high-OBF subgroup had higher total, superior and temporal cpRNFLT and macular GCCT. Conclusions Structural changes and local susceptibility to glaucomatous damage show unique variations in patients with different risk factors, which might suggest that specific risk factors induce specific types of pathogenesis and corresponding glaucoma phenotypes. Our study may open new avenues for the development of precision medicine for glaucoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore how finite-element calculations can continue to contribute to diverse problems in ophthalmology and vision science, we describe our recent work on modeling the force on the peripheral retina in intravitreal injections and how that force increases with shorter, smaller gauge needles. We also present a calculation that determines the location and stress on a retinal pigment epithelial detachment during an intravitreal injection, the possibility that stress induced by the injection can lead to a tear of the retinal pigment epithelium. BACKGROUND Advanced computational models can provide a critical insight into the underlying physics in many surgical procedures, which may not be intuitive. METHODS The simulations were implemented using COMSOL Multiphysics. We compared the monkey retinal adhesive force of 18 Pa with the results of this study to quantify the maximum retinal stress that occurs during intravitreal injections. CONCLUSIONS Currently used 30-gauge needles produce stress on the retina during intravitreal injections that is only slightly below the limit that can create retinal tears. As retina specialists attempt to use smaller needles, the risk of complications may increase. In addition, we find that during an intravitreal injection, the stress on the retina in a pigment epithelial detachment occurs at the edge of the detachment (found clinically), and the stress is sufficient to tear the retina. Abstract
AIM To assess physical activity (PA) including its intensity in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS PA was characterized by the use of questionnaires: Seven-Day Physical Activity Recall and Historical Leisure Activity Questionnaire. A questionnaire of 36 questions, developed by the authors, was used to assess the level of knowledge about glaucoma. RESULTS The study was conducted among 625 adults. The study group comprised 312 POAG patients aged over 40y, including 238 women (76%) and 74 men (24%). The control group consisted of 313 adults (>40 years old), including 202 (65%) women and 111 men (35%). The duration of current PA with an intensity of 4 metabolic equivalents (METs) was significantly shorter among people with POAG. PA in the past was significantly lower among people from the study group, regardless of gender. The level of glaucoma knowledge in patients with POAG was poor and significantly lower in men. CONCLUSION Regular PA is an important and underestimated factor predisposing to the progression of POAG. There is a necessity to undertake educational and preventive actions with a view to modify the health behavior of glaucoma patients.
