Intermediate Outcomes of Shoulder Synovial Chondromatosis in an Adolescent Boy: A Case Report

CASE

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare condition affecting synovial joints. It occurs uncommonly in the shoulder and is rare in the pediatric population. We present a case of a 13-year-old male patient with shoulder pain who was diagnosed with synovial chondromatosis and a posterior labral tear. He was treated with arthroscopic loose body removal, synovectomy, and posterior labral repair and recovered well from the surgery. Four years after the surgery, he developed pain in the same shoulder, but the cause of the pain was not investigated per the patient's decision.

CONCLUSION

Synovial chondromatosis should be considered in pediatric patients presenting with shoulder pain and loss of function with potential for recurrence.

Intraligamentous synovial chondromatosis of the anterior cruciate ligament

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare disease that causes disability and dysfunction of the involved synovial joint. We describe the second case in the literature of intraligamentous synovial chondromatosis involving the anterior cruciate ligament, confirmed by pathology after arthroscopic removal of the chondral bodies. We also describe associated magnetic resonance imaging findings which may be helpful for diagnosis of this very rare entity.

Synovial Osteochondromatosis at the Carpometacarpal Joint of the Thumb

Synovial osteochondromatosis (SOC) is a benign tumor characterized by synovial connective tissue metaplasia. SOC commonly affects major joints including the knee followed by the hip, elbow, and wrist. SOC cases in the hand are not reported as often as SOC of major joints. Particularly SOC of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb is rare. We report on a 57-year-old female with primary SOC of the carpometacarpal joint of her left thumb. Surgical excision was performed and the patient had no symptoms with full range of motion of her left thumb. At 3 years of follow-up, there was no recurrence.

L'ostéchondromatose synoviale est une métaplasie du tissu synovial. Elle engendre de petites masses cartilagineuses qui font saillie à la face interne de la synoviale, puis, se pédiculisent et enfin s'en détachent en développant des chondromes libres. On en distingue deux formes d'ostéchondromatose, la forme primitive, qui est rare, et la forme secondaire plus fréquente dont l'origine est généralement l'arthrose. Nous rapportons un cas d'ostéchondromatose synoviale de l'articulation carpo-métacarpienne du pouce chez une patiente atteinte d'un lupus érythémateux systémique.
