Study on the Electric Conductivity of Ag-Doped DNA in Transverse Direction

Addressing the properties of "Metallo-DNA" with a Ag(i)-mediated supramolecular duplex

The silver-nucleoside complex [Ag(i)-(N3-cytidine)₂]⁺, 1, self-assembles to form a supramolecular metal-mediated base-pair array highly analogous to those seen in metallo-DNA.

The silver-nucleoside complex [Ag(i)-(N3-cytidine)₂], 1, self-assembles to form a supramolecular metal-mediated base-pair array highly analogous to those seen in metallo-DNA. A combination of complementary hydrogen-bonding, hydrophobic and argentophilic interactions drive the formation of a double-helix with a continuous silver core. Electrical measurements on 1 show that despite having Ag···Ag distances within <5% of the metallic radii, the material is electrically insulating. This is due to the electronic structure which features a filled valence band, an empty conduction band dominated by the ligand, and a band gap of 2.5 eV. Hence, as-prepared, such Ag(i)-DNA systems should not be considered molecular nanowires but, at best, proto-wires. The structural features seen in 1 are essentially retained in the corresponding organogel which exhibits thixotropic self-healing that can be attributed to the reversible nature of the intermolecular interactions. Photo-reduced samples of the gel exhibit luminescence confirming that these poly-cytidine sequences appropriately pre-configure silver ions for the formation of quantum-confined metal clusters in line with contemporary views on DNA-templated clusters. Microscopy data reveals the resulting metal cluster/particles are approximately spherical and crystalline with lattice spacing (111) similar to bulk Ag.

Multifunctional behavior of molecules comprising stacked cytosine-AgI-cytosine base pairs; towards conducting and photoluminescence silver-DNA nanowires

DNA molecules containing a 1D silver array may be applied for nanotechnology applications, but first their conducting and photoluminescence behavior must be enhanced. Here we have synthesized and characterized three new helical compounds based on stacked silver-mediated cytosine base pairs [Ag(mC)2]X (mC = N1-methylcytosine; X = NO3 (1), BF4 (2) and ClO4 (3)), that contain uninterrupted polymeric AgI chains that run through the center of the helixes, comparable to related silver-DNA structures. The exposure of nanostructures of [Ag(mC)2]BF4 (2) to cold hydrogen plasma stimulates the reduction of the prearranged AgI polymeric chains to metallic silver along the material. This solvent-free reduction strategy leads to the compound [AgI(mC)2]X@Ag0 (2H) that contains uniformly well-distributed silver metallic nanostructures that are responsible for the new conducting and photoluminescence properties of the material. The presence of silver nanostructures alongside compound 2H has been evaluated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The conducting and photoactive properties of 2H were studied by electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) and conducting-AFM (c-AFM), and photoluminescence microscopy (PL), respectively. The results demonstrate that the presence of well-organized metallic silver nanoentities on the material is responsible for the novel conductivity and photoactive properties of the material. This methodology can be employed for the generation of multifunctional silver-DNA related materials with tailored properties.

Magneto-optical and thermal characteristics of magnetite nanoparticle-embedded DNA and CTMA-DNA thin films

Recently, DNA molecules embedded with magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles (MNPs) drew much attention for their wide range of potential usage. With specific intrinsic properties such as low optical loss, high transparency, large band gap, high dielectric constant, potential for molecular recognition, and their biodegradable nature, the DNA molecule can serve as an effective template or scaffold for various functionalized nanomaterials. With the aid of cetyltrimethylammonium (CTMA) surfactant, DNA can be used in organic-based applications as well as water-based ones. Here, DNA and CTMA-DNA thin films with various concentrations of MNPs fabricated by the drop-casting method have been characterized by optical absorption, refractive index, Raman, and cathodoluminescence measurements to understand the binding, dispersion, chemical identification/functional modes, and energy transfer mechanisms, respectively. In addition, magnetization was measured as a function of either applied magnetic field or temperature in field cooling and zero field cooling. Saturation magnetization and blocking temperature demonstrate the importance of MNPs in DNA and CTMA-DNA thin films. Finally, we examine the thermal stabilities of MNP-embedded DNA and CTMA-DNA thin films through thermogravimetric analysis, derivative thermogravimetry, and differential thermal analysis. The unique optical, magnetic, and thermal characteristics of MNP-embedded DNA and CTMA-DNA thin films will prove important to fields such as spintronics, biomedicine, and function-embedded sensors and devices.

Effects of Metal Ions on Conductivity and Structure of Single DNA Molecule in Different Environmental Conditions

We design a novel nano-gap electrode to measure the current of DNA molecule, by which the current-voltage characteristics of individual native DNA, Ag-DNA and Ni-DNA molecules are obtained, respectively. The results show that the voltage gap of Ag- and Ni-DNA is higher than that of native DNA, and the conductance is lower than native DNA in neutral environment. The structure transition from B- to Z-DNA is observed in the presence of high concentrations of nickel ions and Ag-DNA appears chaos state by STM image and U-V spectra characterization. But in alkaline environment, the conductance of Ni-DNA rises and the voltage gap decreases with the increasing of nickel ion concentration denotes that the conductive ability of Ni-DNA is higher than that of native DNA.

Cytidine-Ag+-purine base complexes as studied by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

The complexes of cytidine (C) with Ag(+) and adenosine (A), guanosine (G), inosine (In) and caffeine (Caf) were studied by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Both collision-induced dissociation (CID) "in- source" and CID MS/MS experiments were performed. The stability of [C + G + Ag](+) and [C + In + Ag](+) ions in the gas phase was found to be much higher than that of [C + A + Ag](+) and [C + Caf + Ag](+) ions. It is reasonable to conclude that guanosine and inosine form bidentate complex with silver cation, by N7 atom and O=C6 oxygen atom, whereas adenosine and caffeine form monodentate complexes, by N3 atom of adenine and N9 atom of caffeine.
