Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous neuroimaging studies have identified significant alterations in brain functional activity in retinal detachment (RD) patients, these investigations predominantly concentrated on local functional activity changes. The potential directional alterations in functional connectivity within the primary visual cortex (V1) in RD patients remain to be elucidated. METHODS In this study, we employed seed-based functional connectivity analysis along with Granger causality analysis to examine the directional alterations in dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) within the V1 region of patients diagnosed with RD. Finally, a support vector machine algorithm was utilized to classify patients with RD and healthy controls (HCs). RESULTS RD patients exhibited heightened dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) and dynamic effective connectivity (dEC) between the Visual Network (VN) and default mode network (DMN), as well as within the VN, compared to HCs. Conversely, dFC between VN and auditory network (AN) decreased, and dEC between VN and sensorimotor network (SMN) significantly reduced. In state 4, RD patients had higher frequency. Notably, variations in dFC originating from the left V1 region proved diagnostically effective, achieving an AUC of 0.786. CONCLUSION This study reveals significant alterations in the connectivity between the VN and the default mode network in patients with RD. These changes may disrupt visual information processing and higher cognitive integration in RD patients. Additionally, alterations in the left V1 region and whole-brain dFC show promising potential in aiding the diagnosis of RD. These findings offer valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying visual and cognitive impairments associated with RD.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between tinnitus pitch and loudness, the frequency of hearing loss, hearing level, and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) scores reported by patients. Methods: In total, 139 patients (50 men and 89 women; mean age ± SD, 60.19 ± 11.47 years) who suffered from chronic primary tinnitus associated with sensorineural hearing loss were included in the study. Participants underwent pure-tone audiometry and tinnitus pitch matching assessments. Additionally, all participants completed the Hungarian version of the THI questionnaire. Correlations were assessed using simple linear, Spearman's, and Pearson's correlation tests, and a linear regression model was applied. The Mann-Whitney U test was also used. Results: This study identified a significant correlation between the pitch of tinnitus and the frequency of hearing loss (p = 0.000 *; rho = 0.549). There was also a significant correlation between tinnitus noise and hearing levels (p = 0.000 *; rho = 0.375). Age was shown to significantly affect tinnitus loudness (p = 0.016 *) and hearing levels (p = 0.000 *) as determined by a linear regression model. Tinnitus duration only significantly influenced tinnitus loudness (p = 0.022). There was no significant effect of sex on tinnitus or audiometry parameters. Total THI scores were influenced solely by tinnitus loudness (p = 0.021 *). Furthermore, sex did have an effect on total THI scores, with women reporting higher scores (p = 0.000 *). Conclusions: This study concluded that there is a significant correlation between the pitch and loudness of tinnitus and hearing levels, suggesting a connection in their underlying mechanisms. The intensity of tinnitus and hearing level are primarily affected by ageing processes. Furthermore, the severity of self-perceived tinnitus is mainly related to the loudness of tinnitus.

Abstract
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss, a prevalent emergency in otolaryngology, is known to potentially precipitate cognitive and emotional disorders in affected individuals. Extensive research has documented the phenomenon of cortical functional reorganization in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss. However, the potential link between this neural functional remodelling and cognitive-emotional disorders remains unclear. To investigate this issue, 30 bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients and 30 healthy adults were recruited for this study. We collected clinical data and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from the participants. Gradient mapping analysis was employed to calculate the first three gradients for each subject. Subsequently, gradient changes in sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients were compared with healthy controls at global, regional and network levels. Finally, we explored the relationship between gradient values and clinical variables. The results revealed that at the global level, sudden sensorineural hearing loss did not exhibit significant differences in the primary gradient but showed a state of compression in the second and third gradients. At the regional level, sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients exhibited a significant reduction in the primary gradient values in the temporal pole and ventral prefrontal cortex, which were closely related to neuro-scale scores. Regarding the network level, sudden sensorineural hearing loss did not show significant differences in the primary gradient but instead displayed significant changes in the control network and default mode network in the second and third gradients. This study revealed disruptions in the functional hierarchy of sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and the alterations in functional connectivity gradients were closely associated with cognitive and emotional disturbances in patients. These findings provide new evidence for understanding the functional remodelling that occurs in sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Abstract
Purpose Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a major public issue that affects elderly adults. However, the neural substrates for the cognitive deficits in patients with ARHL need to be elucidated. This study aimed to explore the brain regions that show aberrant brain functional network strength related to cognitive impairment in patients with ARHL. Methods A total of 27 patients with ARHL and 23 well-matched healthy controls were recruited for the present study. Each subject underwent pure-tone audiometry (PTA), MRI scanning, and cognition evaluation. We analyzed the functional network strength by using degree centrality (DC) characteristics and tried to recognize key nodes that contribute significantly. Subsequent functional connectivity (FC) was analyzed using significant DC nodes as seeds. Results Compared with controls, patients with ARHL showed a deceased DC in the bilateral supramarginal gyrus (SMG). In addition, patients with ARHL showed enhanced DC in the left fusiform gyrus (FG) and right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG). Then, the bilateral SMGs were used as seeds for FC analysis. With the seed set at the left SMG, patients with ARHL showed decreased connectivity with the right superior temporal gyrus (STG). Moreover, the right SMG showed reduced connectivity with the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and increased connection with the left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) in patients with ARHL. The reduced DC in the left and right SMGs showed significant negative correlations with poorer TMT-B scores (r = -0.596, p = 0.002; r = -0.503, p = 0.012, respectively). Conclusion These findings enriched our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment associated with ARHL and may serve as a potential brain network biomarker for investigating and predicting cognitive difficulties.

Abstract
Purpose Currently, the underlying neurophysiological mechanism of acute tinnitus is still poorly understood. This study aimed to explore differences in brain functional connectivity (FC) within and between resting-state networks (RSNs) in acute tinnitus patients with hearing loss (ATHL). Furthermore, it also evaluated the correlations between FC alterations and clinical characteristics. Methods Two matched groups of 40 patients and 40 healthy controls (HCs) were included. Independent component analysis (ICA) was employed to obtain RSNs and FC differences were calculated within RSNs. In addition, the relationships between networks were conducted using functional network connectivity (FNC) analysis. Finally, an analysis of correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between FNC abnormalities and clinical data. Results Results of this study found that seven major RSNs including the auditory network (AN), cerebellum network (CN), default mode network (DMN), executive control network (ECN), sensorimotor network (SMN), ventral attention network (VAN), and visual network (VN) were extracted using the group ICA in both groups. Furthermore, it was noted that the ATHL group showed aberrant FC within the CN, ECN, and VN as compared with HCs. Moreover, different patterns of network interactions were observed between groups, including the SMN-ECN, SMN-CN, ECN-AN, DMN-VAN, and DMN-CN connections. The correlations between functional disconnection and clinical characteristics in ATHL were also found in this study. Conclusion In conclusion, this study indicated widespread alterations of intra- and inter-network connectivity in ATHL, suggesting that multiple large-scale network dysfunctions and interactions are involved in the early stage. Furthermore, our findings may provide new perspectives to understand the neuropathophysiological mechanism of acute tinnitus.
